2 tips on VHB backing removal: 1 - you can slit the backing towards the center of the strip and pull it off in two halves (works well for me). 2 - you can apply pressure to the corner you want to peel from for 15-30 seconds and allow the VHB to adhere before trying to remove the backing (I've had mixed success)

Tip for VHB: When I'm cutting a piece from the roll of VHB, I cut full depth across the entire width, EXCEPT for the last mm or 2, then tear it off, and since the backing has far more elasticity, it tends to stretch, creating an unattached, tiny tab, which is much easier to grasp. It's not always pretty, but it works for me the vast majority of the time! Hope this helps! Love the videos! Keep 'em coming!

I make weapons too, and I totally agree with you. The moment when the tip of the flexible steel electrical conduit whizzed backwards and missed my throat by nanometers as I barely dodged in time while watching it go by in super slow motion is when I realized how truly dangerous and lethal the 8 foot steel whip I made with it that had 1/4 inch bungee in it making it devastatingly extendable. My whole lot flashed before my eyes in the same split second it missed my throat the first time I tried to crack it 😅😊 I was so proud of myself and my creation. That's the only soft weapon I've never hit myself with, and good thing too, cause the end was jagged and razor sharp, would given me a hell of a quick death, and if glad i learned the first time.....😊

The backing and tape stretch at different rates, grab the red backing with tweezer and stretch it a bit then lift off. Pro tip, if you think the bond is strong as is you should try a quick wipe of primer (pro-bond, 3m adhesive promoter). Also when removing tape grab a corner and stretch it. The adhesive will fail and lift off whatever it's adhered to, helps save painted pieces and your fingers!

That quote about always upgrading speaks incredibly well to me as a musician, myself. The bright tone of my voice needed an acoustic to suit it. I played a Martin for years before I finally had the money to drop on a Taylor and I haven’t looked back. The strings I use, the pick, all the way down to how I wear my watch and switch my ring to my right hand when I start playing is to improve how I am able to perform. It’s crazy how much of a difference the smallest change in detail can make.

To remove the backing: In my daily hobby box I keep a small pick set. Straight, hooked, etc. These make removing the adhesive backing easy if you poke into it and out towards the edge while lifting up. I've found they come in handy more often than tweezers in a lot of other places.

G'day Adam love the show mate, I used to build and repair truck bodies for a living and when we applied the roof to the body witch was a roll off aluminium we would use 3m double sided tape on all the cross braceing and it was a real pain in the rear end to remove the backing from the tape so what we would do is make a small cut the the centre off the tape so if its a 1mtr long life off tape cut it at 500 ml just threw the backing and use the tip off your utility knife to get it started and peal each side away just enough so when we lay the roof down there was 2 small tags you can grab and gently pull along and the roof would stay in place as you did it worked a treat because if we we're to remove the backing off the tape and then lay the roof out and it wasn't straight it was a nightmare to try and pull it back up to redo it, hope this trick helps you out and I apologize for the long message thanks for all the amazing builds and content you do you are a true craftsman thanks Marcus king, Victoria - Australia.

so I work for a sign making company and we use VHB all the time. The absolute best method I've found is to just hold the very edge of the backing with your fingernail then, as fast as your twitch muscles will allow, whip your finger to rip it away. You'll then get a section that you can peel easily by hand. works for me 99% of the time.

Great knife prop! Much kudos to the maker and to you for giving them the shout out. For the VHB... Typically a good really sharp pick or scratch awl works well. I've also kept a scratch piece of VHB or other sticky tape with a folded tab on it around, press/burnish your VHB in place, stick the other tape to one end of the release/backing plastic, and pull it off. For tape with backing i found that cutting part way, then tearing the rest of the way across tends to cause the backing to fray and stretch allowing you to grab the backing and not the tape itself. I have to do this a lot at work and it can make life a lot easier especially if the tape is double sided and wont be seen.

I use it VHB often with my leatherworking as a temporary hold, and the best and most foolproof way I've found is to take an AWL (or a needle would work too), *hold it at about 20 degrees and stab through the backing towards the end you are trying to peel up.* If you accidentally stab into the tape simply lift up on the awl as you slowly pull out and it will lift it up everytime! This method almost always stabs through the backing and separates it from the tape by wedging in between, you'll get a feel for it immediately.

Awesome build. To help with removing the vhb backing, try using another piece of tape. You want something with just a little bit more stickiness than what's holding the backing on. Also, try making a cut through the backing across the vhb that lets you bend & start the removal of the backing just enough to grab after it's stuck down. Info courtesy of having a son who worked in the sign business & watching him assemble many vinyl signs. You work in order of decreasing/increasing adhesion.

Some of the hints for peeling the backing off of the tape sounded good so I just tried out the one about making a cut in the middle and peeling from the cut to get started, and it worked pretty well. I just used the same tape last week in 1/2" and It took me a good 4 minutes to get the backing up by picking at it. Ran into similar problem when I started using foil tape until I realized that I needed to peel the tape, not the backing.

VAB backing, Stretch the corner of the tape (not the backing), diagonally and slowly. Stop when backing releases. The backing will release just enough to get purchase and tape will return to shape.

For the VHB backing I had the same issue for years. I think I saw a Jimmy Diresta do this trick and it's worked for me. Take your knife, or in his case an icepick, and come in horizontally and very shallow. Poke into the center of of the red backing not the edges. Only insert the rough thickness of the backing and then pull up. If done right it will pop up a big chunk of the backing nicely. I hope I explained that right.

I do something similar. I take a sharp utility knife and score the backing in the middle then use the blade to lift it in the middle from the edge giving me 2 easier peaces to peel.

Adam, this might help with the VHB. I use a large pin to remove the backing from they VHB. I use the point of the pin to get between under it on a corner then stick the pinpoint into the backing from underneath and then with some slight pressure I peel it back from the tape. I sometimes need to use the tip of Exacto knife blade to hold the corner down as I start to peel the backing off.

Love it! If I get me one of those kits I would probably go for a powder coat on those side panels (and possible the hand bit that sits between the pins).

Easiest way to always remove backing is to leave the strip on the roll until you apply it. Leave a portion of backing with no adhesive on the end of the roll. Pull length required, apply on application and pull the backing all the way to where you want to cut it. Cut the adhesive off and then cut your backing (still attached to the roll) an inch or so longer so that you always have a peel starting point.

For VHB, I find it easiest to use my pinky nail as you can feel the corner of the backing hit the quick. If that isn't your jam, applying masking tape to the backing and using the tape as your leverage works well too.

Per the VHB question regarding removing the backing, if you make a slit in the plastic backing somewhere in the middle of the tape, you can peel it from the middle out. saved me a few times. try slitting on an angle to make it even easier.

When working with 3M VHB tape if you cut through the backing a little bit away from the end & once the very end is stuck down push the tape against that end will start lifting the backing making it much easier to remove.

I make a very light pressure cut with my razor knife around the middle of my piece and that has worked pretty well for me! Also, you reduce the risk of peeling the tape off of what you are adhering to

18:50 incredibly late but in case anyone else has a similar struggle, I do this with tapes like this, I make a slit in the film about half way across the length of the tape and peel from there, It’s a lot easier to lift film when the corner isn’t fighting you to come up too!

On the high bond tape. You get your length and bend it there. Then use your razor to separate at the bend, then cut your length. Easy! Basically, separate BFO sticking to the surface. You're welcome Adam.

To get the backing off I usually use my fingernail pointing straight down near the corner and try to "scrape" the backing off, it usually separates quite easily as it wants to let go before the adhesive bond to the object below.
