I'd like to say I really like the format that the show has taken in these covid times. With Adam having to doing all of his own recording, and with the editing often including some of the mistakes, and even camera setup... it feels a lot more personable. I like it. I hope you keep some of this once social distancing is no longer such an issue.

It's very competent yet still very raw and feeling genuine as a result. It's not overproduced. It's what good quality KZbin often is. Also embracing mistakes allows us to learn along with Adam, which is always a positive.

I know it has been said but I'm going to miss these kind of videos when the pandemic is over (if they end). The general lack of music and the more raw feel of them has really captured the magic of making things to me. It makes it feel more attainable for someone like myself. The COVID age of videos has definitely sparked my imagination for becoming a maker. Once my move to Iowa is over it is definitely something I want to start doing.

Hi Adam, violin maker here. Can I suggest that instead of using sandpaper to finish it, use a flexible scraper instead (the kind violin-makers use to finish the violin arching). 1. It takes wood off FASTER 2. The wood grains look sharper because it is cutting the wood rather than rubbing it in (sandpaper dulls it and pushes sawdust into the grain) 3. You get 'straighter' curves because a scraper only takes off high spots (sandpaper takes of highs and lows) 4. You don't breathe in dust There's literally no downside except for spending time acquiring the scraper or making one from a used saw blade. Cheers! Love your builds!

My Dad has been recording bird songs for about 20 years. At first he used a small tape recorder. He played the songs when he got home, and the cat just sat there ignoring it. Then he switched to a digital recorder, and the cat got very excited hearing the songs. Kind of interesting :-)

Early on in the lockdown videos Adam seemed to have a low level of panic vibe about him, like he was worried what he was going to do with all his time. I imagine for someone with so many balls in the air & businesses to worry about it was a stressful time. Watching him slowly unwind & get into doing small things well & with care, getting a bit more zen as you will has been a lovely journey. Hope he gets to keep his moments of zen in his life going forward.

Haha well Mr Savage your about to embark on a new hobby in audio recording!! I remember the first high powered shotgun mic I bought, first night I had it I went into the garden and heard a dog barking in the distance that I couldn't hear without my headphones on. I fear you might run into handling noise problems with a wooden handle, so I'd be interested in a future update for this rig to let us know how it fairs. Good choice with walnut too! It's by far the most beautiful of all the woods and because of that really tight grain it shapes so wonderfully.
@ToadeRTroniX
@ToadeRTroniX 4 жыл бұрын
I think he might get more noise from the mic cable. I'd like to hear a sample. I have a Zoom H4N with the built-in stereo condenser mics. You can buy custom shock mounts for the whole device, but it comes with a plastic mic stand mount that you can hold it with. I pretty much eliminated handling noise just by taping a couple of layers of pink egg crate foam around the handle. I assume the shotgun mic is way more sensitive though.

Beautiful handle. I do something similar with a tabletop tripod mount. But that looks more comfortable. A couple suggestions: Carve a saddle to fit the tube. Isolate the mount from the handle and recorder. Shorten mic cable to perfect length. Headphone splitter to share the experience. And since you have the H6, you could add a capsule to it for environmental sounds. Maybe piggyback another handle so your wife can focus on other birds.

As a Biz/Finance major years ago I took an ornithology class just for the science credit. Never expected to still be bird watching but it's so interesting! Nice build, thanks for sharing this with us.

I was going to post something very similar. I can see having a backup, and even a backup for that. But having a great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandparent backup is excessive lol

A beautiful piece of kit. Thanks for sharing the process with us! There are a few changes I would make if (when) I make one of these. (I love capturing sounds from around my neighborhood, mainly field recordings of electrical droning noises, machinery, water, and other sounds.) Mounting the mixer under the handle would make it more comfortable in the long run - even having something light that far away from your hand/wrist creates a lot of muscle fatigue. The other modification I would make is increasing the angle at which the mic was mounted, so you wouldn't need to change your wrist angle to point the mic up at the canopy.

I see nothing about this handle that even slightly looks phallic. Nope, it's obviously just a normal, very well designed handle. This is all quite ordinary.

Nice!! Looks like it fits your use case very well. I built a Tascam based unit with 2 condenser mics that all sit on a single mic stand to plunk down in the middle of jams at bluegrass fests. Works well.
