Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Table Saw Fence Upgrade!

Adam Savage’s Tested

Күн бұрын

Adam spends the day fixing and upgrading his Powermatic 66 table saw with a new table saw fence system. The table saw is equipped with an Accu-Fence, but its sides were damaged in recent use. Adam replaces those sides with a beautiful set found online, and even got some tips to install them direct from the manufacturer! Keep an eye out for a cameo appearance of a Scottish soda sent in from a fan, complete with kilt bottle cozy!

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice kzbin.infoUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Only reason to run without I can think of is to push material through backwards - which can help with tearout.. I gave it a go once or twice to see how effective it was.. But definitely easier way to get the same result - bit of sacrificial board or even just masking tape can do that.

Fellow scottish Adam here. Pronunciation on Irn is the same as Iron. The old advertising slogo for Irn Bru was "Made in Scotland from girders". Acotland is apparently the only country in the world wgere Coca Cola is sold, but it's not the #1 soft drink. Irn Bru outsells it something like 10:1, although due to recent government mandate, they reduced the sugar content. There used to be 34g of sugar in a 330ml can!

Adam, at this point the video is 3 yrs old. I hope you learned about riving knives since then. I once had an uncle come over to rip form spreaders for concrete forms. We used my old Sears. He kinda protested which side I ripped on...but he was a shop teacher at a high school before retiring. I said, "Uncle, I worked in a hardwood lumber mill for four years. I feel confident in using this old saw any way I want." He calmed down. I had some Fat Tire ale in the fridge. He had never tried it. It was a nice visit. I'm not sure what beer he really likes. Were both German American but he's pretty straight laced and conservative. Its kinda sad. Our original immigrant ancestor was listed as a Cooper on the 1860 Census. None of us has made beer that I know of. It's on my bucket list. Grandma's side was Bavarian. Dad's side was Prussian. I think it will be a nice Pilsner style. Nothing too fancy at first. Maybe a Hefeweissen later. You know, you could go beyond just bagpipes if you're in the mood for Scottish culture. I like Dick Gaughan. His Redwood Cathedral was pretty interesting. Might ken ye to a more subtle, emotional side.

Hey Adam, just wanted to say I’m a huge fan of all that you do. I’ve watched myth busters for as long as I can remember and I’m so happy that you created this channel. Watching myth busters got me into engineering and the scientific process and inspired to go to college in the pursuit of an engineering degree from NC state. Getting to watch these one day builds and seeing the ingenuity at work is awesome. Getting to your level of craftsmanship and creativity is something that I am striving to learn and hopefully put to good use later in life. Just wanted to let you know how appreciative I am for keeping science and engineering cool.

My most recent acquisition was a table saw. Over the last few weeks, it has not only caused me the greatest injury (besides once burying a stanley blade in my arm) but it has also become my most valued cutting tool. I would truly love to see some ODBs for your table saw jigs. And I bought those socket set adapters after your vid recently. Very handy.

There's an easy trick to writing a good repair or assembly manual: grab someone from the front office who's never done anything like the procedure before and watch what they get wrong. I wrote an umpty page manual to manufacture components for a model sailboat once upon a time and that was the key. That and good photos!

Adam, a riving knife will substantially reduce your kickback risk. Most safety gear gets in the way, not these. I have one on my sawstop and I only need to remove it when I install the dado blade.

IIRC, it was never offered on the 66 (but I might be wrong). I installed one on my 1950’s era cast iron table saw and it was a huge PITA. Though the hole in my shop wall from a kickback incident was enough incentive.

I'm a computer programmer. One thing I'm pretty well known for is my ability to take large projects and break them down into an assembly line type process, which enables me to build very large things very quickly. Even though it's a digital space, the physical concept of assembly line production still yields improved efficiency. Important lesson for anyone involved in STEAM work.
