Adam revamps the hardware storage system for his workshop by building a new custom wall of storage bins! Nuts, bolts, and all manner of hardware now live in this new sorter system that rolls perfectly into its new home in the cave. Happy sorting!
Sorting Bins: amzn.to/2PhSf87
Casters: amzn.to/2rUfeOI
(Note: Adam used six locking versions of these casters, which spreads the weight better than just four.)

as a guy who has worked in shops and warehouses and seeing people do this, it is just better to stay out of the way. simply because the person moving said object has a plan on how they wanna do it and no matter how they explain it to you , you can never fully do exactly what they want

Your sorting is exactly how we have our bins where I work in Aviation. A couple pointers I would add: 1) we have mounted an example item on the front edge of where you have the plywood strip. This signifies what’s in the compartment for easy identification, especially items not at eye height, empty boxes for restocking, or if you remove the compartment for the workbench and then return it. This helps a lot when searching for a piece of hardware that visual is a better fit to a problem. Also this helps a lot where you have a bunch of miscellaneous items, say a compartment of roll pins, beside a compartment of hitch pins. 2) often helpful to place the label from the packaging to the back wall of the compartment for proper identification when re ordering stock. 3) the tilt you gave the compartments will be a headache when rolling the stand over any transitions. The hardware will vibrate out the front. A slight tilt in the other direction (aft down) would keep all hardware in compartments and also allows more to fit in the bins. Tilted down in the front is great on a bench or wall, but in motion no so much. Beautiful build.

ecoheliguy I used to set up the blue steel 40-hole bolt bins. We would have set it up a little differently. We would have gone to “eye level minus 1 row” and put the nuts and washers. Fender washers would go in a drawer to give you 4 more spots. Then below the nuts and washers, start with the shortest bolts and go longer until you are out of room. Then start back from the top down to the nuts with the longest few (least used) sizes. That might not be best for Adam’s situation, but it was our default when space was at a premium.

When I worked at Caterpillar, I learned that they had done the research and found that split washers didn't do any good, and actually made some joints loosen QUICKER than with no washer. If they, casters, are chrome plated then you have hexavalent chrome to deal with. Not good. Gloves don't expose your hands skin to the arc UV. Grinding even with a flap-wheel use a grinding shield with your glasses. Did you post the dimensions somewhere? So, take the bins and work backwards for the dimensions. Sounds good to me. @JustinShands
@JustinShands 4 жыл бұрын
@@thinfourth If you ever need to replace them (or remove them to reuse them on something else), it's definitely harder if they're welded on... even if you have a plasma cutter. The fact that I can mount/unmount the casters with the same 2 hand tools (and that they are tools that most people are likely to have) is much easier than permanently connecting them and then trying to cut them apart and retain usability. For a relevant example, what if 6 casters wound up being not quite enough and Adam decided that 8 was the right number? If he figured that out after bolting them on he'd just need to drill some new holes, but after welding he'd have to cut them off and then grind them down to be level enough to use again... That said, casters really are one of those things that generally live on the item forever after you put them on, so it's certainly not outrageous to weld them on.

Regarding welding on the casters, I recall one heavy equipment shop where I was working. Their floors were rough (from tracked vehicles running across the concrete) and the master mechanic I was working with had customized his roll-cab with an angle iron base frame with welded on solid steel casters. He related that a new mechanic had the factory screwed on casters on his box fail, dumping a fully loaded almost new tool tower over onto its back. Bolted on might be easier to service, but chances are you'll never need to service them. With 6 casters, if one fails it will probably still be stable enough for you to carefully unload and service it. Welding works, and you don't have to alter the design to account for the bolt heads.
@KatieCottingham
@KatieCottingham 4 жыл бұрын
I experienced similar situations. If it's heavy and needs to roll, and you're using basic casters like that, no point in not welding and getting a stronger connection to the caster plate. It goes agaisnt everything you have drilled into you in theatre and film building, but it's a piece of equipment/a tool, not a project piece.
