Quite frankly, ALL of the commissioners of all four major professional American sports leagues are TRASH these days. Like, I am hard pressed to think up an easier job at this point for which you make OBSCENE amounts of money. Take good old Rodger in the NFL. That loser makes like 50 million dollars a year to manage a machine like cash cow and SOMEHOW makes the product WORSE. What a time to be alive...

When we hooped for fun as KIDS we valued defense because that's how the NBA was. If you let somebody constantly score on you, you would get yelled at or clowned for your defense. And we we're playing for FREE. Defense is what makes it a REAL game and not some gym class shoot around. EDIT: In the hood sometimes mfs would get replaced MID GAME for playing no defense. I am with you. I LOVED the isolationism and "hero" ball in the late 90s and from 2000-2011ish. No higher level of excellence than seeing a dude like Jordan or Kobe just attack the best defender or defenders with no picks and screens. THAT was a TRUE measure of greatness in my opinion. The game is TOO easy today. Perhaps the early 2000s was a bit too slow and defensively oriented, but there is a happy median somewhere out there and this ain't it.
@hansonlee5847
@hansonlee5847 3 ай бұрын
@@skap_attack I think the closest happy medium we got was the Spurs/Warriors mid 2010s. At least, the Warriors had defensive guys with Klay, Draymond, and Bogut, and the Spurs had great ball movement with defensive guys (Kawhi, Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili). But when we saw players like Harden and his eye popping numbers getting so much attention, the NBA might have thought that offense is the way to go. If that's true, then players like Towns, Embiid, and Harden should be champions, right? But at least, we can hope that Wemby will make defense look great again in the modern NBA

He was a skinny kid balling with full grown man with Europe's physicality and the boy ended up the best player in the best team in Europe no questions asked, and didn't shit his pants in Euroleague finals, instead winning finals MVPs like a true champion. Even us Barcelona fans had to take a bow and admit we were watching basketball history in our eternal rivals' home. Honestly at this point I think the best way to make players care for the game more would be to introduce new contract conditions which pays them a minimum, with the potential for a greater guaranteed amount based on performance. As it stands the minimum base guarantees are way to high and that's how you get Simmons.

And even then players are so much better at shooting the 3 that people may still not pack the paint.

The defense that is being played in today's game is nowhere similar to how players played defense back then. When the 3 second rule was implemented in the NBA at the start of the 2001-2002 season, teams were still playing physical defense despite centers and power forwards not being able to stand freely in the paint under the basket without guarding anyone. It was more of the hand-checking that allowed players to be physical, as evident of the points per game average in the league at that time which was around 98. When hand-checking was taken away in '04, the league's points per game average had risen significantly into the 100s, despite some of the players who were still playing physical defense. So no.. the 3 second rule isn't the sole reason for the lack of physical defense. It's the hand-checking that was taken away on top of players just being plain damn lazy on defense.

My solution is to make the NBA all stars play the G-league All-Stars. Since the NBA players don’t appreciate the opportunity they’ve been presented let the G leaguers remind them of what true hunger for success looks like. Pay the G leaguers to play the game and a bonus to win. Give them bonuses for poster dunks on NBA players, steals, rebounds and holding the entire team to less than 100 points for the game.

It’s not just the NBA. The entire American basketball system from CYO to AAU to the NCAA is toast. It’ll take 30 years to recover if radical changes aren’t implemented soon. We’ve conceded our dominance on the sport to Europe. Not just in talent, but the system that creates a much more interesting competition. Euro league is far superior to everything we have here. How they develop youth, how they coach, and how their season and tournaments are set up.

Hand-checking was removed in 1999, not 2004. And I have the rules to prove it. 99-00 season (first major steps toward handchecking removal) Handchecking had been slowed down to a small degree in the late 90s, but not anywhere close to the massive change that was introduced starting in 99/00. "In the backcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders. In the frontcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders except below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may only use his forearm." So by this point, handchecking is for all intents and purposed removed - "There is no contact with hands" and "the defender may only use his forearm" below the FT line extended. 00-01 season - new rules that further decreased amount of contact allowed by a defender "No contact with either hands or forearms by defenders except in the frontcourt below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may use his forearm only." "Neither the offensive player nor the defender will be allowed to dislodge or displace a player who has legally obtained a position." "Defender may not use his forearm, shoulder, hip or hand to reroute or hold-up an offensive player going from point A to Point B or one who is attempting to come around a legal screen set by another offensive player." "Slowing or impeding the progress of the screener by grabbing, clutching, holding “chucking” or “wrapping up” is prohibited." "On the weakside, defenders must remain on the weakside outside the paint unless (i) they are double-teaming the ball, (ii) picking up a free cutter or (iii) closely guarding an offensive player." 01-02 season - Addition of illegal defensive 3 seconds rules to weaken defenses even more. "A new defensive three-second rule will prohibit a defensive player from remaining in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds without closely guarding an offensive player." This rule makes it much easier to drive in the lane, because bigs can no longer camp out in the lane and deter drives to the basket like they did in the 80s and 90s. 04-05 season "New rules were introduced to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game." "The truth is, it makes the game [where] players have to be more skillful. Nowadays, literally anybody can get out there and get to the basket and you can't touch anybody. Back then, if guys put their hands on you, you had to have the skill to be able to go both ways, change direction, post up, you had to have a mid-range game because you didn't want to go all the way to the basket because you would get knocked ass over tea kettle. So I think playing the game back then required MUCH MORE SKILL." --Kobe Bryant on 80/90s basketball

Skap, man additionally to all the things you say about the rule changes, someone should talk about two main things not talked about. They talk about the physicality going down, but that's only on the defensive side. There two key features on offense where physicality has increased only in the favor of the offense. These two things are illegal screens and offensive shouldering players out of legal guarding positions. A screen cannot be set without leaving one step for the defender to adjust to the screen. That's why before people would set the screen a foot or two away from the defender, and then the offensive player would move towards the screen and defender could change directions either go under or over or switch. Now they are allowing players to set the screen repeatedly setting the feet all the way up to touching the defender, so the defender has the screen set without the rule required space and the defender cannot avoid the screen because it's set right on him. That is ilegal and I cannot watch basketball because of it. That is a level of physicality that was not allowed and it's unfair to the defense. The second is if a player is driving with the ball, he has to always be in control of his movement, while dribbling he cannot run over people or shoulder them out of the way. They confuse the defense is supposed to have their feet set to draw a charge with the defender moving in a legal guarding position on defense. So no the level of physicality allowed on offense is more than the rules allow because if you are driving you can push into the defender shoulder him repeatedly, euro step through him and if he is in the way (which obviously he will be if he tries to defend) that is considered blocking by him or if they don't call a blocking foul it's an amazing play by the offensive player "wow bullying his way to the basket". That is f'n bs. That is an offensive foul, the person can move while defending and being defending is not illegal. They have to call offensive foul how it was correctly called back in the day if not Karl Malone would have been the GOAT if he was allowed to play like that. Also you couldn't run and raise your knee and go through someone with the knee, that was offensive foul. You couldn't jump shoot through the defender leaning right through him ripping him. That was offensive foul. You had to go vertical and be in control and slide by people. This has to stop and someone has to call this out.
@bpmachete
@bpmachete 3 ай бұрын
Forgot to mention the bs where you can't guard jumpshots, because if you go for a block or contest a jumpshot obviously you have to be close to the offensive player. They took the rule where you have to give a space to land to the player or it could be even a flagrant and for sure a foul and they ran with it and now if they go for a jump shot you better not get close if not they just have to touch you with feet and fall backwards or in a split style side contortion and it's a foul. Look at the people contesting the jumpshots on Kobe in the video, with these rules all he had to do was shoot then raise his knees a bit and fall touching you and it's an and one. That is f'n bs, and every jumpshot contest is a foul if they do this flop garbage. If you can talk about this bs that would be great Skap.

Come on...this is a PLAYER driven league....you gave 'em the keys, this is what you got. They're enabled and spoiled from childhood through the AAU. They pick thier coaches and teamates. Players who don't give a rat's ass about winning....just building thier individual "brand," and drinking Cristal while hanging at "strip clubs." Who's highlight of the season is hanging with LeFraud at the All-star game.

To this guy, what is "skill"? The ability to score when shooting a wide open shot? Is there nothing else that can be included as a basketball skill? Like (shh!) defense, or rebounding, or shot blocking, etc.? When we get to the point where a person can make, say, 40% of full court shots, are we at the pinnacle of basketball skill?
@atlien1988

What's so hilariously ironic is the physical nature of the game forced players who were more skilled to stick out like a sore thumb. There were always athletic freaks of nature and that will never change. However, historically, the greatest players were the most skilled and fundamentally sound players in the league. They were experts at their position and played their respective roles well, often showcasing their excellence on both ends of the court. The knee-jerk reaction to fix the game as if it was broken is what ruined the NBA. The league always adjusts to suit the BEST players in the game. The 90s adjusted because almost all the best or more dominant players were bigs. These entitled, Primadonnas have made those rule changes even worse because they simply don't care to compete like the old guard.

Imagine being so tone deaf to the league you're in charge of. A contact sport being too physical. It's like thinking swimmers are too wet in the pool. Silver is sitting around in his mansion with no testosterone & a bird chest thinking, "if I'm scared of these large men in the paint, the average viewer of this sport is, too. Better take defense away from the game & have a 48 minute shoot around count towards the teams' records. That'll help the game."

How the NBA is rigging games for Lebron: Lakers free throw disparity: October: -1.7 November: +6.5 December: +3.4 January: +1.8 (Celtics game last game in Jan) February: +11.9 March: +10.6 April: +8.4 It was also IMMEDIATELY after the Celtics game where there was an uptick. Like you can pinpoint it to the exact day. I mean it must be the world’s biggest coincidence it happened right after the Lakers organisation complained about the calls in the Celtics game.
