We are thrilled to welcome to the podcast, commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver. We were lucky enough to get 45 mins with Adam to talk through so many things surrounding the league. Let's get to it.
Topics include: JJ and Tommy open up the pod talking about the first week of the In-Season Tournament. Then Adam joins the pod and we open up talking about how he manages his time. We also get into the in-season tournament, NBA Twitter, the league's approach to fixing the load management problem, refocusing the NBA on basketball itself, how NBA media (including our pod) can do a better job talking about the NBA and basketball, his personal experience with the Donald Sterling situation, Adam's biggest regrets as commissioner and so much more.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter KZbin channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

@@eastmeetswest8932 agreed, the nfl can’t really do that, but the NBA has lots of foreign players including Kristaps Porzingis (who played great tonight but sold at the end and Brown is hella inconsistent and Tatum had an off night and the Celtics are shooting horribly in the past 2 games and got most Celtics fans hopes up [not mine] and Kornet sucks and Horford and KP seem to not be able to make threes and idk if I’m overrating Philly is a good team but this year and last [which we might never fix] is hurting ourselves by selling) and more where overseas fans would probably enjoy it…

Looking a few years back I never would have thought that I would one day see a (recently retired) player sit down with the COMMISSIONER OF THE LEAGUE for 45 minutes, unaffiliated with a big network and have a very candid conversation about everything NBA, including potentially sensitive topics. The league and the media surrounding it is going is a great direction and JJ is one of the driving forces of that evolution. Great interview, I could easily have listened to 2 more hours of this.

Silver is the best commissioner among all american pro sports. What he’s done since taking over the nba is tremendous. He continues Stern’s legacy of globalizing the sport but also has given players more voices than ever before. Every offseason crazy trades happen and keep the sport fun and dramatic at the same time (but like good drama). The play-in tournament made the end of the season more enjoyable with the stakes on the table and more ad revenue involved. He actually cares about the growth of franchises (cracked down on tanking) the fan bases, and most importantly the players. He just gets it. Not everything has been perfect, the switched allstar game formats have been odd, now this mid season tournament is a new adjustment. But he actually cares about the entertainment value of the sport and wants the best for the future of the sport. Hard to knock the guy. He should be commissioner for a long time. He will go down as top 2 ever maybe even the best when it’s all said and done.
@portlandgoose4727
@portlandgoose4727 7 ай бұрын
It’s important to acknowledge that he also seems to be critically aware of the fact that just because a certain decision was decided the right decision (play-in tournament, all star changes, etc), doesn’t mean that it really was the best decision in the end, and having level, open discussion with the players as well as data collections and analysis of fan data is necessary in finding our way closer towards the optimal solutions. And reaching those solutions takes trial and error. Fortunately we have a commissioner who isn’t afraid to admit when he’s been wrong. The end was powerful. “Back to the game of basketball”. YES. The fans couldn’t really give 2 fucks about the theatrics (well, the hype beast fans do obsess over the player’s fashion statements 🙄). We don’t want to wait 30 minutes just for a half hour 3-point contest. Love the opportunity to get a more personal read on Adam Silver. Amazing

51:40 I couldn't agree more with Adam's push for more explanatory commentary during games. I've played basketball up to High school varsity so I know the general defensive schemes and offensive sets, but it wasn't until I started watching old man and the 3 when I started hearing play calls and the intent of certain schemes like the dunker spot. There are still a lot of episodes where they use a vernacular term and 75% of what they are describing can't be decoded but basketball podcast have definitely expanded my knowledge. JJ occasionally does this when he is calling a game and it's more interesting to understand what's going on beyond "they are playing man defence", and only calling out offensive actions such as player A screens for player B and player B drives dishing it yo the corner for a 3.

I love the back-to-basketball mentality that got brought up, and I love that both Silver and the networks are talking about putting a wider swath of the NBA on nationally televised games. With the rapid growth of sports betting as well as just growth of plain fan base of NBA this is the most important part of the game. Officiating integrity needs to be discussed at some point, with sports betting it’s become much easier to see the questionable calls during the games. I believe many others can agreee.

I'm disappointed by how JJ handled the load management conversation. We just watched a playoffs where key guys were dropping off like flies due to injury, leading to a worse playoff viewing experience for the fans, and yet JJ sits here and smiles with Adam Silver acting like the current 82 game schedule is perfect.

@@NlneLives210 yeah this is how stupid Adam silver is he alienates is American audience just to get Chinese audience but he doesn’t understand that we live in America we buy the tickets we buy the merchandise we watch the shows and the games because we are in the same time zone and it’s easier to access for us. Selling out further viewership in another country is the dumbest business model. Adam silver doesn’t know how to do good business. This is why he will always be inferior to David Stern. Hate David Stern all you want but he made the game global with the dream team one simple decision made the game more global than it was before. Nothing Adam silver does is going to enhance the game of basketball. He’s an egomaniac with poor business acumen. Stop debating this people you will lose the debate every time. I wish the sheep in the comments would stop defending him.

Adam has always impressed me. He has always found a way to remain human, approachable, articulate, and genuine. I look at other heads if leagues, and the demeanor and attitude always feels different. Soccer, Football, Baseball... all feel like the commissioner has no real Interest in the fan, or players. Adam has always struck me as more independent and less the talking head of the owners. I do not know him at all personally. But just think he seems like he actually cares. And actually tries his best. Even on his failures and mistakes, he seems more accountable and open to his critics. Thank you JJ, great questions and interview. Especially given the time crunch. I really would love to see more with Adam Silver as you hope!

Must say, I'm highly impressed with Adam Silver. He takes his responsibility as commissioner serious as he views his impact of the game to all who have stakes in it: fans, players, governors, media, etc. He makes deliberate actions all in the name of improving the game/product that is the NBA. The example of the Sterling decision stands out of his leadership as opposed to his NFL counterpart with someone like Dan Snyder and CTE.

Not to bring politics on either side of the aisle into this. But this conversation exemplifies leadership. The amount of detail and nuance to the approach to the commissioners problem solving abilities should be demanded by leaders of our society. JJ thanks for this platform, this was a one of my favorite interviews to date.

My main issue with the in-season tournament is there no additional incentive for fans to watch. It's just a regular-season game for us. My proposal is the winner of the in-season tournament gets a first round draft pick between the 14th and 15th pick. That way there is much more excitement for fans to be invested for their team to win and the players still get that money incentive. For the first time ever, a team would be awarded a draft pick for winning, which helps even more to keep the competitiveness for the teams that probably aren't making the end of season playoffs. Win-win for everyone. Do it Adam Silver
