Scotts right about the getting paid $40 every time your song gets played in a public venue . You have to join an organization called PRS . Whenever your stuff is played you have to get a piece of paper signed by the bar, club or wherever plays it . Sometimes in some countries owners get funny but it is law that they should be music licensed to be playing it. I was doing small gigs in Goa India and it was great there . Every gig the person who booked me would sign my PRS forms then every month I'd get my dockets together and email them to PRS. It takes a while to get it flowing but once you've been with them for a while you get paid monthly and they basically chase your royalties for you. I stayed in India for a year and between my wage paid by each venue and my PRS that kept me in rent, food n drink , my motorbike and occasional purchases. If your an artist or part of a band and your not plugged into it, it's really worth you looking at . You just have to register new work and once that's done technically you can get paid anytime that work gets played. Edit : The amount that Scott quoted isn't right for radio and streams and would depend on how well the gate does at a gig or festival . I used to get more that on average for playing a 300 capacity club as the support act. I stand by it being a great service and definitely worth looking at as it's extra income every time your work is played.

I usedto do 14 tracks and a freestyle in my set and an average PRS payment at a licensed venue was about £ 80- 140. To be honest I'm not entirely sure how America works, though I have known American artists staying In the UK that are signed to it and use it when they are gigging worldwide . I did give you the name of the organization but I don't suppose you bothered to actually look before telling me I'm wrong . I don't think it works the same way for signed artists at labels as the labels have their own departments for chasing royalties and copyright infringement etc. ( I just checked this and you can be a member regardless of being on a label) I'm a Rapper and I was unsigned and used it for at least four years and if I renewed my membership could still get payments now if people were playing my stuff or I toured again.
