Julian Ovenden has been working hard at promoting his new CD. I have pre-ordered it from Amazon. For all those critical of his voice - I think it is a lovely voice which has matured over the past year. There are not many voices like his now. Where are all the wonderful singers of the past - Howard Keel, Gordon MacRae and going back even further, Nelson Eddy? I grew up in an era when singers could really sing - whether they were crooners like Sinatra, Bing Crosby or Vic Damone - they could actually sing!

Saw Julian in the Lincoln Center production of "Showboat" a few years back. FIRST ROW! He was so wonderful. I adore him in everything he does. There's a KZbin clip from the Proms of Julian and Sierra Boggess doing West Side Story and other selections. Just terrific. I'd love to see him in South Pacific; perhaps my long wished for trip across the pond will happen!

I never hear this song without remembering a day when Mom dropped me and my sister off at the movies in downtown Pensacola. She wasn't happy with our choice of movie, but let us go anyway. At the last minute we decided to go to the Saenger Theater instead to see "South Pacific." So happy we changed our minds!

You made a good decision. Love that musical. My brother is a c130 pilot and has been stationed there twice and once in Milton. He even got to fly Fat Albert. I would fly in to Pensacola for events I was interested in ( and stay with my brother and his wife ). The very last event was Andre Rieu and his JSO. But he is retired from the USMC now, and is an attorney.

I was a newsboy in Pensacola, FL in 1965. That spring was so beautiful, and I was convinced the song had been written about spring in Pensacola. Worse, I would sing it at the top of my voice as I delivered papers unaware that people could probably hear me in their houses. Now I wonder what they thought!?

I played a a version I really liked from a 1957 production (film) of south Pacific. It's close but this is slightly better. It simply may be the recording technique and environment in the decades of difference. What a voice! In the 1957 production actor John Kerr (playing Lt. Cable) appears to sing the song but it is actually performed by Bill Lee. The setting and scene are so emotional that one has to listen to just the voice and music. Young Lt. Cable falls in love with a dark skinned island girl. He is from the wealthy Philadelphia family of Cable and Cable. Our young Lt.is a Navy pilot. The family will disown him if he pursues the relationship - which he does. He will give up the meaningless lure of wealth for love. Not a happy ending when he is killed in action. A powerful song when attached to the South Pacific story. How often in life is this message played out.

What a revelation! Julian Ovenden's beautiful voice and interpretation of classic crooner greats is absolutely perfect! Also, the character of his sound is reminiscent of the great Al Jolson, a century ago, and we haven't heard anyone sing like that, viscerally and unforgettably, in a long, long time. Talk about putting a song over! Can't wait to hear more. And like another commenter wrote, there must be some way to incorporate his terrific voice into future episodes of Downton Abbey!
@gossamerwings363210 жыл бұрын
I wonder if he'll be on Downton Abbey for very long as he's taken off and won't be back for maybe a year, I don't think he's really one of Lady Mary's suitors. Julian's got I think more interest in pursuing a movie career now, he left Foyle's War after only a few years and I missed him back then and now he makes very short and rare appearances on Season 5.

His voice sounds exactly like William Tabbert”s who first delivered this beaiutifiul song to the world in 1949 starring Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. Amazing to hear it sung that way once again. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein probably were the most prolific composers for the musical theater and crafted songs that are spoke to our hearts about love and love lost, life choices, racism and bigotry, which made us think a bit more and face the mirror in self reflection and point the misgiuided in in a kinder direction. Most can still move you to tears, I hope they would created courses for children to teach traditional songs that are just as much a part of the American cultural landscape as any other historical events taught in education today, Exposure to the arts can calm the restless, inspire creativity at an early age and make the world a bit more civil and kind,
