In 1875, Tchaikovsky was commissioned to write 12 piano pieces, one for each month, that were to be published the following year in a monthly St. Petersburg magazine. He was delighted with the commission and also with the editor's own suggestion of sub-titles. "October" was designated as 'Autumn Song' so is suitably poignant and wistful. Several orchestrations have been made of this set, published as "The Seasons' but also known as 'The Months,' and the version heard here was made by Alexander Gauk and recorded by the Detroit Symphony under Neeme Järvi. (Chandos CHAN 9514).
