Yeah amazing British Architecture but this bridge was built by a Sri Lankan Engineer and builders when British could not import steel and resources due to WW I . So locals built it with stone and cement without steel.
@JamRock_Jr.2 жыл бұрын
From what I read about history it says British built it so which one is right now? Are you telling the right story or history is telling the right story or History has got it all wrong and you're telling the right story?

@@JamRock_Jr. British Ceylon colonial government was the project funder. Ceylonese national engineer Mr. Wimalasurendra was the chief engineer and the architect of the project. All the labours were Ceylonese(Sri Lankan.) Mr. Wimalasurendra built the bridge completely without steel. That's why there are arches(Arches can withstand huge pressures.) Mr. Wimalasurendra also contributed to the electrical engineering sector in Sri Lanka. There's even a hydropower plant named after him as a tribute to his service.

05:25 orange coconut are called King Coconut. It's water and flesh is tastier than normal green coconut and we don't use King Coconuts for cooking. 15:30 that's definitely a leech bite. Usually most leech bites are harmless unless you have very serious and rare allergies. Usually, the leech can be removed easily without the need for medical attention. But the bite can cause extended bleeding at the attachment site even after the leech is removed. This is because the saliva from leeches is an anticoagulant and interferes with the blood's normal clotting. Sri Lankan mountain areas are very rich with leeches. specially after rains. You can wear leech socks though if you don't like them. Or else you can use soap water, salt water or some alcohol (hand sanitiser) to remove leeches if they started to suck you blood out. If you walk through an area filled with leeches just don't stop, keep moving. In that way it's hard for them to get on your legs.

Leech saliva contains hirudin, an anticoagulant and antiplatelet agent that works to prevent blood clots and reduce the amount of congested blood in the tissues.

This took me back to 2018 when we visited Ella. We found a lovely hotel which looked down on the bridge. My friend and I walked down to the railway and took photos of our husbands sat on our balcony while they took photos of us on the railway. Sri Lanka is definitely on our list to return to. Mosquitoes and leaches love me too, leaving everyone else untouched. We usually buy the local potion, have burning coils and plug ins too and I still come under attack. Keep the videos coming, love seeing where you are. Some destinations we have visited whilst others go on our list. Keep safe Tracey

Before you put on your shoes rub laundry detergent or moistened soap on your feet or socks to keep leeches away. Powdered salt moistened with water and applied to your feet or socks (if you don’t mind humid socks) will also keep leeches away .

Dont worry about mosquitoes and and leaches. If you spray a good repellent like ‘Off’, Cutter’ or any other brand with DEET on your outer garments and carefully spray your palms and slightly rub your face and ears and any exposed skin areas and on your hair you can keep mosquitoes away for a long time. There are also wearable repellents that you can use. As far as leaches are concerned, if you don’t mind having moist feet with a bar of soap and rub it on your feet including between toes or cover them with laundry detergent. If you wear socks you can wear socks soaked in laundry detergent and partially dried (unrinsed) with walking shoes. Salt is also a deterrent for leaches. Wash your feet and while wet sprinkle powdered table salt on all ares of your feet. If you go barefoot may have to sprinkle from time to time. You can sprinkle on socks and generously inside sneakers if you cover your feet.

That's quite a common occurence to have some leeches on you at Ella, the moment you started going down to the area underneath the bridge, i was expecting some leech removal footage. You either remove the leech before it bites you, or let it suck till its filled with its meal and fall off.. and inbetween removal should be slightly cautious as its mouth parts may remain and may cause pus formation. Overall almost not at all life threatening, so cheer up !

Hi guys, FYI the bridge was designed and built by a local architect without using a single piece of metal. When brits struggled to find a way to build it with modern engineering the local said he would not only design and build the bridge but stay under it when the first train runs on it too. Sure he did!! Fascinating… Good luck!
@rishanyusa2 жыл бұрын
This is because there was a shortage of steel during the world war. So a local engineer came forward to construct this structure
@ranminitours58122 жыл бұрын
The construction of the bridge was generally attributed to P. K. Appuhamy, a local Ceylonese builder.
@thimiraamarathunga45882 жыл бұрын
Not it is not. The draught/plan is well documented and was presented in the UK parliament to approve the construction cost from the governor. it was planned by a Scottish engineer. Nobody lay rail tracks as you fit. it is well planned and measured. Trains are highly controlled and require milliliter precision to prevent accidents. British constructed over 100 arch bridges or viaducts - the proper name, by the end of 1800s in England. and over 20 in India (some of them are double deck viaducts) before they even started to construct this line in Sri Lanka. Are we this ignorant to believe that the people who invented trains, railways, a whole signaling system and was operating underground trains in London by 1890s did not have the knowledge to construct a bridge??

Be careful when flying drones below the arches. There are nests of bees and hornets underneath it, (you can see them in the video). If you manage to get them spooked with the whoozing and buzzing drone, there will be a chaos, and you and everybody around the place can end-up at hospitals. Stay safe. ! and have fun. Leeches ain't bad, it's just people are grossed out by it's slimy slithering surface of the creature. Russians use leeches as a treatment to purify blood vessels. After a bite, if you felt itchy then it was definetly a leech.
