WBPP (PixInsight): Dark Frame Optimization

Really informative and well explained, thank you Adam. I'm binging on your videos since my PixInsight trial started, and have been super helpful. Coming from AstroPixelProcessor, the amount of tweaking that PI allows may seem daunting at first but once I start learning more about signal processing (a lot thanks to videos like yours), it's evident the value of this software.

I can now CONFIRM you run into all sorts of issues optimizing flats. I had forgotten the lessons in this video and wasted a lot of time. Once I stopped optimizing the flats; let WBP do ALL the calibration, things went very well. So thank you again Adam.

I have fallen into the optimization trap as well, and I actually see instructional videos showing checking the optimization box when they should just be using bias. Thank you very much for this information, you are a born teacher.

Hi Adam, thanks so much for such an informative video (which is the reason why I became a member of your site). I know this video is for sensors that "behaves" well but for a CMOS sensor that has some degree of amp glow, is there much benefit (if any) using dark optimization on matching darks (as in the optimization might have a k that's very close to 1 because the darks match both length and temperture)?

Hello Adam, your instructions are really great for me and I am considering switching to PixInsight, great program, but very comprehensive, and very versatile in the possibilities.. Tried the settings with OptimizeMasterDark, but for me the Master Light are significantly worse . Used Bias 0.01sec DarkFlat 0.54sec and Flat 0.53sec. Without OptimizeMasterDark and the warning, the Master Light will be fine. And one more question, when I have calibrated the DarkFlat and the Flat, is the MasterFlat calibrated or do I need the MasterDarkFlat to go with the MasterFlat for new lights. A MasterFlat is a calibrated image. You do not need a Bias/Dark for the MasterFlat! (in face in WBPP you will see it is grayed out.)

Quick question Adam! I get master darks, bias and flats in WBPP 2.0.2 But where is the masterLight ?

I haven't shown this yet, but I am getting there. WBPP was designed to do pre-processing (all the stuff I have shown so far). The additional steps of registration (StarAlignment) and ImageIntegration are *convenience* features of the script. I fear many people think they are the point of the script. These features only work if the preprocessing happened correctly. Upcoming sections will highlight the weighting, star alignment, and image integration of light frames. That is where the Master Light frames come in. In the meantime, you can look at my old WBPP information on this- not much as changed...but again, I will be making some new sections here.
