He could have done it. They are heavy enough to avoid floating, the 4wd would help keep traction, and crucially the air intake is quite high up and far back. He just made the schoolboy fording error and went too fast.

I have watched dozens of these videos.. and my mind is blown again and again at how stupid people are. How little they know or care about their car. and the abilities they think their car has.. Even when there are broken down cars in the ford and huge audiences and people with cameras, cheering and jeering, people still drive through.. it never gets old. It is a fascinating insight into human psychology and human or even educational failings. “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” said George Carlin. And it is true. The average IQ in the UK is under 100 now. But it's a normal bell curve distribution, so some half the population has an IQ between 60 and 100. And a lot of those people drive. But it might not just be a question of intelligence. Perhaps some people are just NPC's.. here but not really here. Smart but not really smart. Unable to think critically. Going through the motions. Following the leader.
@shia_labeouf Жыл бұрын
@@chaosflower4892 I think it's unfair to call people stupid, I would agree it's more a problem of education. Fords are so rare these days that people have no experience of them, plus that rarity means you don't really bother teaching new drivers about them (unless they live near one I guess). You can understand why, on first seeing one, someone would think "well it's part of the road and there's no signs saying it's closed or dangerous so it's probably fine". Another problem is that people don't really read or translate the depth markers. How many people do you think could tell you how high off the road their air intake is to know whether it'll clear the wading depth? Also most people don't really understand how their car works or the danger that water poses to engines anyway. I also think fords need more thorough signage, maybe some basic rules on how to handle them. Just "enter slowly", "maintain constant speed", "follow your bow wave", "do not try to restart the engine if it dies" with some simple road-sign diagrams above each.

I feel like hydro-locking should be one of the basic bits of mechanical knowledge needed for a driving test. Maybe not even the why or how but just a basic imperative that if your car dies from a large volume of water, DO NOT immediately try to restart it. It's more about how you approach it. Sure the high-riding 4x4s (especially the ones with snorkels) can pretty much pin it and still be fine, but at least half of these fails are just due to people going too fast or too inconsistent a speed. Enter smoothly, and keep a consistent bow wave ahead of you, and you're generally fine, even in a small hatchback.

Why does going slowly work? I'd have thought there'd also be some benefit to being in the water for less time
@SamuelLanghorn3 ай бұрын
the key is to keep water out of the air intake (let's assume you know where it is?), typically air intakes are at a higher spot with some protection. some air intakes draw from slots near the windshield, that's why you have to make sure the water never flows over the hood (bonnet?) to get into the intake. Obviously slower speed avoids making a high bow wave that will flow over the bonnet. you still have to maintain some minimum speed to make sure water does not come in from other places, e.g. the exhaust..... It is tricky and basically you do not have many chances to really practice. My recommendation is get a snorkel for the intake (many 4x4 have that) and also raise your exhaust pipe so it can't flood. Of course that's not really the end of it. For prolonged fording you need to make sure that your entire drivetrain and electronics are shielded from water. Professional off road vehicles pressurize the axles so that water can't get in...... not a trivial exercise.
