A huge thanks to ‪@dclassTV‬ for sorting the interior on my MGB in this video. Check out their channel for a full video of their work that was completed before I gave a full breakdown of the cost involved in my 3.5-year restoration of my 1972 MGB GT. Of course all restorations are different, so this will not necessarily correlate to other projects.

There’s a whole lot of prep involved, and £6k is about right for a decent bare metal re-spray. Nearer to £8k if you want an absolutely flawless, show-winning finish.

Currently restoring and fixing up my first car which is a mk3 golf gti spent just over about 7k wire brushing waxoyling underneath, full outside respray new front fenders coilovers etc new wheels some interior bits and outside extras. Different skirt as well and all plastic was colour coded and resprayed. Looking good but i completely agree i know every blemish and mark that bothers me just trying to accept it will never always be 100% and it is my daily as well so cant complain in all honesty. Loads more to do but a project takes time and you appreciate it all the more because of it.

You didn't quite understand, I did do a rough estimation. But restorations never live up to that in the slightest
@rozinant1237
@rozinant1237 Жыл бұрын
. @AdamC3046 Part of doing a proper estimate is to also plan for contingencies. If as you say, you know that every single phase of the restoration is going to come out 25% higher, then you should have tacked that on to the final estimate. The truth is that as a youtuber you are having work done at any cost and you don't really care what the final bill is. The revenue generated by filming this, more than covers any cost over-runs. So the final equation looks more like this: 14K for a restored MGB, +4K spent to create content and gosh only knows how many thousands stuffed in your jeans as a content creator. No one feels sorry for your "predicament"
@AdamC3046
@AdamC3046 Жыл бұрын
I'm a KZbinr and don't care what the final bill is? The revenue generated by filming this more than covers £17k? I didn't film the restoration at all, I earned nothing from it. Just this small video, which earned pennies in comparison. It doesn't sound like you've undertaken a restoration yourself either. As I said, estimates are always very far from the truth. You can never predict what may come up and how much specalist work would be required, which can easily double any 'proper' estimate.
@rozinant1237
@rozinant1237 Жыл бұрын
@@AdamC3046 Listen, I don't think you are reading your own writing. You say that all estimates are wildly optimistic, you say that you "Know" that things are always "double". Then if you know this as fact, then you must have had a thought in your mind, that a car you wanted to spend 8.5K on was actually going to end up costing you 17K. I have restored several high end sports cars, and know for a fact that, you were going to spend that much on this car. You have 640K subscriber's, please don't tell me how little you are making, we all know the numbers.
@AdamC3046
@AdamC3046 Жыл бұрын
You're not proving to be very knowledgeable on these subjects. If an estimate can easily be double, it can just as easily be triple, or only a few £k off. The point is, it is a widely-known fact that restorations can cost more than predicted, and mine did. My channel is not about restoring my MGB (classic car videos get barely any views), so I didn't document it at all. So no, I did not earn any of what I put in to the resto. (P.S. subscriber-count does not correlate to earnings)

Classic car owners sometimes get too hung up with resto costs and present market price. Meanwhile 98+% of cars on the road were bought for far more than their present depreciated value, almost every other car on the road is "underwater" to a worse degree. Another way to think about "underwater" classic car ownership is they hold value MUCH better than the other 98% of cars on the road, as they're likely past the trough of their depreciation curve. If you're not in a rush and want to learn, doing the work yourself will take a lot longer, but will make classic car ownership comparatively inexpensive.

Great video, really enjoyed it. A beautiful car for sure. But a few things at the end really blew my mind. 1. £6000 for a respray with minor runs/imperfections, for that price it really should a perfect finish. 2. A company fitted a new exhaust and its blowing? That should be fixed for free my man! 3. It definitely pays to do whatever jobs you can yourself to save labor. The ignition barrel, bonnet stay, and head cover are good DIY examples that can be done for no skill. I'm starting work on my 71 MGB this weekend, so thanks for the content, and again beautiful car.

My family have always owned classic ,bikes ,cars,vans whatever and like Adam has found out it"s a bottomless pit if you want a minter and and superfussy with something in mild metal that has suffered the weather and salt for many years . Lots of ways of saving money - don"t rush into buying the first cars that might come along ,take your time buying the right car ,buying the correct parts and get to know local experts ,trimmers ,painters and any petrolhead who you know locally . Some courses at night school ,if your really keen to stay with classics may help ?. My own 70s M.G.b is about 90 % original ,bought off a family that loved and cherished it and gets loads of admirers very time I go out . Never been welded ,original wings , sills etc and in White , every bill with the car with 70,000 + on the clock . When I bought it it needed a heater blower switch ,a iffy pull handle door lock ,a sticky starter & duff window washer ,but it was stood on a plinth in a sports car showroom since 2019 .But parts were reasonable and there are lots of M.G. specialists . I was offered the car originally for £ 5,000 but knit picked and got it for £ 4,600 a year ago . I also have 2000 P6 Rover and parts for that are silly and a Triumph TR7 mechanical parts are cheap but body parts and lights are expensive ,but it"s faster and corners better & nicer to drive than my M.G.b but doesn"t look as good and seems to have been put together by unemployed Russian plumbers .But if your happy with the car - job done ?.

I've restored/refurbished many classics over the past 25 years; purely for pleasure. I've never expect to return a profit but I have kept the loss to a minimum. I never spend more on the vehicle than it is worth and never get trades people to do anything. Spend 'their' money on tools and equipment and teach your self. Thousands of MGB's are available so it's easy to make a big loss on restoration/ refurbishment.

I've calculated 40 to 50k to do my astra how I want it.. I couldn't give a shit if people tell me that's not worth it but the thing means the world to me and never going to sell it Might be a while doing that resto I guess..

@@Brettoh well I bought an astra Arctic 5 years ago, first proper fast car and I just love the thing, it's not the best car ever but its just great to drive and Ill never sell it so.. it's a fairly used car when I got it, 63k miles and a Scottish car it's whole life so has rust in the usual astra places underneath so it ain't perfect, the plans to have effectively a modified concours car but not to the extreme degree so I can still use it on dry days, basically imagine a 7-8k paint job, 4-5k interior, another maybe 5k on the engine and box then suspension probably another maybe 2.5k then add wheels and brakes that's another 3k or so and finally interior youre talking another 3k or more and that all adds to around 35k I think I didn't add it up just a guess plus the cost of buying the car 5 years ago of 8500 that's the mid 40k range without going in to major details of my plans. I had a lot of carbon fibre plans but scrapped that as its a bit pricey and I'd be damn lucky to do what I want😂

hi A great restoration ALWAYS takes MORE time and MORE money than planed . But the best way to restore now is body 100% stripped and chemically dipped ,ALL high dollar resto`s are now done this way . Reflected in the resale . You can always tell a dodgy &/or an incomplete resto because the defects show . Congrats u have done the car justice ,well done ...

That’s not a bad price tbh , the last one I did for a customer was £45,000 in total although arguably once finished there wasn’t really much of the original car left. Looks good that though

How much do you lose driving a new car off the lot?how much do you spend on lattes every year? So you're upside down on it just enjoy it You know you don't have to be perfect in 08 I bought a 72 GT for $2000 put a $2000 metallic gray paint job on traded some old wheels for a set of minilites resprayed the seats and other odds and ends a had a really nice driver for about $6k if you want perfection you have to pay for it but if you're happy with a really nice driver it can be done reasonably PS lose the ugly rostyles and put on some minilites

@AdamC3046 It is your car after all, but those rostyles are just ugly ,wheels make the car imo putting a set of big ugly 18" wheels on a classic Chevy ruin it. I like minilites or in my case minotaurs because they do look British
