Don just got a Hollywood Star (about darn time too) weird Al and Home Free was there. Weird Al talked about Don and what he meant to him and Home Free sang a portion of this song. It was super cool and they had a blast and was excited to be invited to something like that This one was done during quarantine also. Don, Tim, and Austin was In Nashville ,chance was in California and Adam and Rob were in Minnesota. Tim said that they told Don to perform it however he would like to and they would all go around him. This is talking about when we lost 3 musicians. The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens was killed in a plane crash. This was written by Don. He can still sing and he's in his 70's. I love this song.

Haha there is *NO* original video...this song was released Oct 24th, 1971, so it was a little before MTV came about LOL !!! By the way the Day the Music Died is a real thing. Feb 3rd 1959 a plane carrying 3 of the biggest singing acts crashed killing them all (Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly & The Big Bopper) and shocking the innocene of the teenage world. Don reached out to Home Free to help him celebrate his generational & iconic song's anniversary. There are so many speculated metaphors in the song...The Quartet in the Park ? The Beatles, The King & Queen ? Elvis & his wife Priscilla, the Jester ? Bob Dylan ?

About the video itself - it was during quarantine and they wanted to release for the 50th anniversary of the song - so they had to film separately and the video editor did a hell of job piecing it together (to be fair they did a fair chunk of videos during quarantine that their editor did a fantastic job with) the shadow box setting is memory based which is thematic with the song being all memories. Love your reactions :-)

The age in Don McLean's voice adds even more poignancy to the song - there is so much in this song. Absolute genius - I'm so glad to hear him reprise his song with Home Free.

This was released last February on the anniversary of "the day the music died" (the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, & the Big Bopper). The quarantine was still in effect so each guy recorded his part separately. That's one of the reasons for the format of the video. Tim & Austin were in the studio when Don recorded his part but they were just watching. The remake of the song was to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the song - it was released in 1971. Don said he wanted to do the song with Home Free because he thought they understood harmonies.

You probably aren't familiar with Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper or Richie Valens but they were among the first originators of Rock and Roll. Late '50s. Black and white film on KZbin of all three. Buddy Holly sang "Peggy Sue", Big Bopper sang " Chantilly Lace" and Richie Valens sang "La Bomba". Their careers had just taken off when the plane they chartered to take them to a gig crashed. Rocked the fledgling rock and roll world.

The collaboration I want to see is Home Free and Shania Twain doing her song "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" where Home Free is in Drag and Heels ("Lets Go Girls...") Honestly I'm almost willing to bet money that Rob would loose it minimum. To the best of my knowledge it doesn't exist but hopefully we can will it into happening. Another song you really want to react to is their cover of "Travelin' Soldier" originally done by the Dixie Chicks (now called "The Chicks"). They spin it on it's head and it gets you right in the feels. They also did a collaboration with Billy Gilman for his Grammy nominated song "One Voice". That one will probably wreck you emotionally too. Great reactions as always. Have a wonderful weekend all.

That was sooo good!! Emotional yet fun! Loved your reaction too...makes me smile. I did notice.. when u sing... there's no accent. LOL speaking of which...what is that? Where u from? School me on accents as I'm from a small town in Saskatchewan Canada and I'm not familiar with most. 😂

All their videos that were done in 2020 show them in "boxes". They filmed themselves on cell phones because they couldn't get together.

I don't think the visuals of this video were inspired by those of Don's original. When he first sang this, it was about an event that happened over a decade before, and this collab was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song. So using a shadow box visual here was perfect, encasing grandma's memories and knick-knacks for all to see. IMO this collab was much more successful than Pentatonix' _Jolene_ with Dolly Parton. For that, Pentatonix was simply acting as backup singers for Dolly. Whereas Don Maclean and Home Free were actually working together throughout, sharing the spotlight in a wonderful way. I liked _Jolene_ okay, but I love _American Pie._
