Nice concise video. Several years ago did this installation on a 15 year old Sienna and cleaning the bolt holes was 90% of the work. First thought the bolts were the wrong size but it was the nut thread corrosion that was very severe. Used a wire brush to start with and then penetrating oil to soften the rust and the bolts still would not start. Finally rented a tap and dye set from Autozone and used a tap to clean the threads. Even then it took a lot of back and forth (in and out) gaining about a half turn at a time to get the threads cleaned. Was very challenging on the exhaust pipe side. In total cleaning the threads took several hours over a few days. Used hand tools (no power) to prevent stripping the threads. After the thread holes were clean the installation went as shown in the video. Now about to do the same installion on another 15 year old Sienna. Came here looking for alternate ways to clean the threads.

I bought a Curt trailer hitch made for my 2017 Nissan Rouge and this was very helpful. I had called a local auto repair shop and they wanted to charge me $250.00! You saved me a lot of money. Thank you!

I bought the same hitch, and installed it last night. This video helped. It probably took me about 40 minutes. A universal joint for socket really helped get around the exhaust. I did not have to cut any underbody trim. This hitch is nice because it sits up high, which is important for an already low to ground minivan. Thanks for the video!

Thanks to your video, I took the time to install one in my car myself without taking it to the dealership. Saved me some good cash. Although challenging because it was just me and the trailer hitch was heavier than anticipated. It took me about 35 to 40 min.

In case anyone ran into the same issues I did ... if the holes for the bolts on your van are rusty enough that you can't get the bolts started properly, or they won't turn in the hole under finger pressure, you will probably benefit from cleaning out the threads a little more properly. The threads I got with mine are M12 1.25 (fine thread) -- same thread size as some spark plugs. I had to go find a tap, with this thread, and 'chase' it all the way through (keep it oiled, do a quarter turn, back if off, and go at it again for another quarter turn, etc.) to clean out the threads. Once I ran the tap through (had to use channel-locks to turn it -- the tap handle I had wouldn't fit in the space), the bolts turned like ice -- was easily able to torque it up to 79 lbs.

Thanks for your video! I have the 2015 Sienna. The only difference is that you have to cut a long opening in the plastic pan on the left side first. Your video of how to slide the right side just above the muffler was a huge save for time and effort! I have to confess one thing -- I should have peeled off the plastic circles of tape covering the threads completely. Instead, I was lazy and just punched a hole after peeling off a couple. the tape is really tough, so I had to put in a lot more effort later trying to scrape off tape bits ... set myself up to fail...

I just did a Subaru Forrester and it was a bit more involved. Had to drop the exhaust, remove (and later trim) a heat shield, and use a die grinder to enlarge a couple holes in the frame. Then you feed bolts up thru that hole to the others via spring wires. Without a die grinder, you might be stuck.

After 13 years of rust, it took me 2 hours to clear the junk off the receiving nuts for my 2007 FWD Sienna. Once the nuts are ready to receive the bolts, it took me 20 minutes to install it. A flex joint is required to do the passenger side in case you don't want to remove the exhaust pipe.

Adam. When you installed, did you notice any play between the bolt holes of the receiver and the bolts themselves? I had a nearly identical one installed by someone else and it's pitched slightly to the right when facing the rear of the car. I'm wondering which is more likely: a sloppy install or a bent receiver.

Thanks for this informative vid! Do you think loctite is necessary?
@vautrain5 жыл бұрын
I think the threads may need some waterproof grease (like marine grease) for proper torque and easy removal, especially if they are a bit dirty and rusty like they are in the video. I'm sure blue loctite would work as well.
@privateinformation93842 жыл бұрын
Some helpful tips: 1) use PB blaster or WD 40 and a wire brush to help clear out any loose rust from the weld nuts 2) Use a m12 x 1.25 tap to retap the weld nut threads (spray tap & weld nuts with WD 40 for lubrication). This will remove all rust/corrosion and will renew the threads. Also, you can use a socket and socket wrench with an extension with the tap instead of a tap wrench. The socket size may differ depending on the manufacturer of the tap ( mine fit a 5/16 socket) 3) once threads are retapped, repeat step 1 to clear out any remaining loose rust. This will make installation of the hitch much easier. After doing these steps it took me only 15 mins to install the hitch by myself.

it all depends on your type of car you have, and what type of trailer hitch you choose i guess. on my toyota yaris i just loosend the rearest rubber fastener on the exoust pipe and dragd it 2-3 inches sideways holding it out of the way with some rope while i mounted the screws on that side. the rope isnt realy nessesary, since its easy to push the pipe aside as soon as you loosen the rubber, hehe but i like for things not to interfere while i struggle to thread the bolts.

Thank you for this video. Very helpful. I truly wish I didn't have to say negative about this video but... it's nice of your neighbor to help out, but, someone has to say this: more people than you think find tattoos to be very disturbing. That man's arms look like they were turned inside out and covered in seaweed and that is disgusting. If that man got his tattoos in ignorance, I hope he learned his lesson and my intent isn't to hurt his feelings, but people are getting out of control and we need to draw the line somewhere. How many people would make these kinds of permanent modifications to the walls of their house, or to their car? Yet they feel comfortable doing it to their own body? Since when is a house and a car more sacred than one's self? We're supposed to consider our bodies so sacred that we will not carve distasteful/profane images onto them, let alone permanent ones. Look into the history of tattoos and you'll find that the first people to get them were misfit criminals, people involved in the occult and people who were involved in freak shows. We're not supposed to want to do as those people did. When things that such people did become common, that is not a good sign: it's a sign that people are becoming less decent and more like the deranged. Don't get tattoos, they are disgusting and disturbing. Every time I see them on the thumbnail of a video I avoid it. And if I knew I would see them in this video I wouldn't have watched it. Not everyone in the world is desensitized to derangement and I will never allow myself to become desensitized to something so deranged. I know that tattoos have become common, but I don't care at all: wrong doesn't become right because a lot of people do it. What's interesting is that this is outright prohibited in the Bible, and yet when I looked into this practice, many tattoo enthusiasts knew full well that God prohibited this activity. I was expecting them to be so comfortable with that practice because they were ignorant of it; but no, they knew that they were doing something prohibited. When someone consciously and brazenly acts against God, they are just about the opposite of a saint.
