The 1992 film Bram Stoker's Dracula should have been called Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. It's a very overindulgent film. That film, while being the second most faithful adaptation of the Dracula novel, still deviates from the novel in big ways. Particularly with Dracula being portrayed as a sympathetic monster and the Dracula/Mina romance being added for the Coppola film. The most faithful adaptation of the novel is the British made-for-television film Count Dracula which was released in 1977.

That first scene with Nosferatu talking to Nicholas Hoult’s character was so strange. You couldn’t really see his face, though you sort of could (???). It was really off-putting. I couldn’t tell if it was an intentional cinematography decision or if there was an issue with the projector’s lighting. And honestly, that initial interaction between Hoult and Nosferatu was the best part of the entire film. I’m really discouraged by how other critics are flat-out lying about this movie. Like Adam says, it’s because they’re afraid to speak the truth. They’re no better than the cowardly townspeople of Wisborg.

I could only see the curve of his lower face, and his thick accent made it hard to catch every word he was saying. Those factors combined made that scene very frustrating for me. That said, the entire sequence when Hutter meets Count Orlok was the best part of the film for me. I ended up walking out at the beginning of the plague and rat infestation, believe it or not, because I was growing tired of the endless possessed dreams and waiting for something substantial to happen. I think if Orlok’s actual arrival had been pushed up by about half an hour, the movie might have held my interest. Totally agree with everything you said here! Always appreciate you to give a honest review when I feel other YT critics are afraid to. I was so bummed out because I had been looking forward to seeing this one since it was announced. The 4 showtimes at the theater I frequent the most in the Chicago suburbs were all sellouts. There was audible moans & groans throughout the movie and an audible sense of relief when the credits rolled at the end!!! BTW; the original look of Nosferatu is so iconic. How on Earth did everyone agree for the look of him in this???

I’m a fan of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) and Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu (1979). As you said, the cinematography, the sets, and the costumes were amazing. Some scenes were shot-for-shot homages to the original. However, some of the performances were overly melodramatic-not wholly unlike the style of silent film. Eggers went for easy gross-out scares when it came to scenes of graphic sex and graphic violence. The characterization was limited. Thomas Hutter’s character had limited agency (pun intended). It is a film dressed in 1922 does 1830, but the gender politics are very of the moment. Lily Rose Depp reminded me so much of her dad in this -as in his Barnabas Collins from Tim Burton’s Nosferatu. She was having fun and she could be scary, but her performance seemed fake to me. I thought Willem Dafoe was way over the top too. Add Aaron Taylor Johnson to that list too. I thought Nicholas Hoult and the actor who played Dr Sewers were solid. The biggest problem I have with this film is that for the moment, it taints how I see the 1922 film because it seems to fit so squarely into it. Yes, there is an authentic quality to the locations, but I don’t find much depth of meaning in this retelling. I wanted to like it more than I do.

yeah what he said .. I thought it kind of sucked too .. Lily Rose Depp was so bad in this film it destroyed it for me the whole way threw watching it , it was a cringeworthy performance , to say she is an over actress is an understatement , I almost wanted to leave the theater ... the lighting was to dark and smoky at times .. having said that the vampire was very cool , and his death scene was cool .. the shots and sets were also cool .. this is for sure hands down my fourth favorite Eggers film .

I took my brother to see this he fell asleep a few times. Boy i like robert eggers the vvitch but this movie was a dissapointment. Nosferatu was very slow paced the vampire didn't get enough screen time he didn't feel like a main character. Giving the vampire a small wig in a mustache didn't make him look scary at all.

Typical Eggers. If you love his stuff, prolly love that film. If you find his stuff purposely boring as paint, Nosferatu is no different and definitely one to avoid. Wish I loved his work as much as everyone else does but I'm convinced that dude just isn't it for me

But Adam said he likes Eggers' works and praised The Witch. So just appreciating the director isn't a guarantee of liking this one. I did like it, and I haven't seen The Witch. I find the polarity of this movie very interesting, I didn't expect such a split in the reviews.

Robert Eggers is an expressionist director. His movies are mostly visuals attached to semi competent stories. The Northman was his most mainstream and story driven movie before Nosferatu and it was still lacking narratively. There are a lot of critics that have Nosferatu on their top ten list. But it doesn't surprise me that a few critics find it devoid of substance.

Then he's a good cinematographer masquerading as a director. He should either stay in his lane and work with someone to make up for his weaknesses or improve his craft and become a well-rounded director and cinematographer.

@synical13 No, he's not a good writer. He needs to get out of his head for a bit and work with good story tellers. Even the greats like Scorsese and Spielberg work with talented writers.

It was beautiful and atmospheric, but the storytelling was totally lacking. I thought the portrayal of Count Orlock was simply awful; the wheezing was really distracting and annoying. He was unintentionally funny at times. Willem Dafoe seemed to belong in a different movie. You really don't feel a connection to any of the characters. I left the movie mystified at the stellar reviews that are claiming this is a "masterpiece".

Genuine review! For me, it has one short plot, and when the story branches off a little, Thomas or Ellen wakes up from their nightmare and we walk back to that main plot. That gets old quickly. Every character has one note to play, e.g. Ellen is always distressed. I think it is no straight-to-streaming movie but neither is it an epic. I was bored twenty minutes in, then moreso an hour in.
