This video shows me treating one of my koi the has had a bit of problem on and off for quite a while it keeps getting better then worse again. I think the treatment has been reasonably success full it has started to get better and hopefully will continue to fully heal.

A tip if you need to keep a fish out the water for a long period of time, a fish will survive out the water for hours providing you keep the gills wet, you can use a syringe to jet water directly into the gill plates and keeping the head wrapped in a soaking wet towel is perfect.

You can also jet some water containing the sedative into the fishes mouth if they start waking up prematurely.

Nice analogy with the gills. Think most people don't know this trick, which might lead to pulling the fish out too fast from the water. I reckon for a successful operation/sedation, you need to; * Ensure the fish is asleep. * Avoid big differential in temperature between water and air. * Moist towels to keep the fish from drying out. * Cover their eyes. * Good air-stone to rest the fish over while it is waking up again. * Clean water. Feels like, that is what you did and seemed successful considering how long you kept the fish out of the water.

Yeah that's a great breakdown I should steal that for the Description lol. It's best to take your time there is no rush you'll only make mistakes the fish can easily manage 30mins out the water (In optimal weather conditions) The longest I ever kept one out was 1hour 10mins to remove a tumor from her mouth (It was my big chagoi in main pond) she was eating 20 mins after the operation and been very happy since 🙂.

Hi Julyan, Great vid, keep'em coming. Do you have any views on using Hydrogen Peroxide instead of Iodine? I usually go at it with Peroxide and a soft toothbrush followed by propolis and powder. THough never dared to keep'em out of water for so long nor sedate them that deeply. Also - what's your opinion on salt baths (2-3% for up to 30 mins)? I hear a lot of opposing views; some say it hurts the fish more than help them. It will drain some cell fluid out as they are set up with reverse osmosis so their cell fluid will flow out of the cells. Some people recommend 0,3% salt in the pond permanently but I am skeptical to that. Any experience? Thanks
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Some good questions there. Hydrogen peroxide - It's depends what % your talking about but a 3% or 6% solution can burn and might cause scaring that will never heal or the will never get its colour back in that area. so I wouldn't use it it's too aggressive the Iodine basically just gives the fish a help in recovery rather than aggressively killing the issue and leaving the fish to heal it lets the fish get better more naturally. I don't mind salt baths depending on what you want to achieve by doing it a bath wouldn't have helped this fish but it might have if it was showing signs of an internal bacterial infection. although 3% for 30mins might have them close to death or probably on their side. I do salt ponds and 0.3% is my recommendation but only if it's necessary such as it could be a good idea if your having bacterial issues or after a treatment for parasites to help the fish recover but a permanent salt level is not only pointless its anti productive if you have an issue with parasites and there is salt in the water it really limits your treatment options. The benefit of salt is the shock as it can kill a lot of parasites but you can also get some of those parasites in marine tanks so its the shock of the quick change in salt that kills them if there is always salt there they will get used to it.

What about in outdoor ponds in the winter- at what water temperature could this be hazardous?
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do it when the pond temp is below 12DegC mostly because the fish wont have much of an immune system to help with recovery anyway and make sure the air temp isn't much different from water temp you don't want to bring a 12DegC fish out into frosty weather.

@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 3 жыл бұрын
It wasn't what i used in this video but a very similar product is Kusuri Orahesive Sealer Powder I just like the powder versions I like the way they stick to the fish after. I also use bee wax that works well. Rocal wound cleaner - It's good a doing what it says on the tin but i think it's a bit harsh i want the koi to naturally heal and fight off the bacteria the Iodine will help do that but the Rocal will just kill everything.

Sadly, 2 of my large koi leapt out of my raised pond unbenknowst to me onto the patio at night, kept hearing a flapping noise, couldn't see anything, it was dark, next day about 9 hours later found him motionless, shredded tail & dry to the touch, my instinct was to pour pond water over him & loosen him from patio, then keep swaying him back & forth in the pond... after an hour he was swimming, after 4 mnths his tail/scales had totally healed. Yeah when i first started it was so surprising you could even keep them out of the water for so long. I had no idea what to do with the fish but it's just like treating a wound on yourself when you go to A&E they will use Iodine and then seal the wound the only extra step is the sedate which is scary at first but when you know how the fish will react its really easy.
