Rb issues showing up again. You should put a stock 1jz in it and call it a day. You can two step the crap out of it, launch it, clutch drop it, whatever, and it will keep taking it. Cheaper to replace as well if something catastrophic does happen, though very rare on those motors. I understand wanting to remain a purist and keep the rb in the skyline, but you have to ask yourself when it becomes to much of a hassle and to expensive to keep replacing cranks, and collars and whatever else always goes wrong on Rb’s.

Another thing to Look into Adam & Alberto; Check the overall length of the Crankshaft Bolt that tightens down both Crank Pulley And Timing Gear, then check the internal Thread depth length on the Crank nose. you should have about 1/4" less length on the Bolt. If the lengths are similar, then you are essentially Torquing the Bolt to spec. but the Bolt isn't holding the Pulley & Timing Gear securely. This is a famous fault on the Geo Metro G13B(DOHC) engines back in the Day. Always use a new Bolt, because the Bolts do stretch AND bottom out in the Crank nose Thread engagement, leaving the Pulley, etc. insufficiently clamped. On a related topic, I have also been able to reuse the crank even tho the Woodruff Key slot is 'ovaled' ...just mix up some Steel Weld Epoxy, clean both Key & Crank Slot, lay some epoxy in the clot, then place the NEW Key in place, wipe off the excess. lightly Oil the Crank Gear(or Crank Pulley) internal surface with oil(so it wont Stick with the Epoxy). Install the Gear/Pulley, Torque Bolt to Spec. Leave to harden for 24 Hours. If the Woodruff slot(s) are really badly Damaged, then you can have a machine Shop Make new Woodruff slots 180 degrees opposite off the crank, just be sure to get your timing right when assembling the Engine. Good luck guys!

Reminds me of old VW diesels. They had a keyed timing gear and a slot on the crank it mated to. A lot of times if you modify the engine or it has high mileage that fails and you bend valves and damage the head. Good thing RBs aren't as bad as VW diesels for timing failure lol. I suggest you should try to find a gear with a D shaped hole and just machine a flat on the crank. It's difficult to explain well but if you want pictures just let me know where to send them and I'll try to get some.

Woodruff keys Semicircular Woodruff keys insert into a curved slot in the shaft. The advantage: Properly installed, it is captive and cannot walk out of the shaft. However, they are difficult to install. The key is first pressed into a curved slot milled in the shaft and then aligned so that its flat top is parallel with the shaft. But as the shaft and Woodruff key are pressed into the component, the key tends to slip out of position. Keys not installed parallel will cause problems in use. Woodruff keys are also relatively short and cannot carry the same load as longer keys. They are used for light-duty applications and mounting taper-bored components onto tapered shaft ends. They’re inappropriate for transmitting heavy torque, such as with wide-faced gears or multigroove V-belt pulleys. Mounting two or more Woodruff keys in line to carry higher loads is expensive and makes installation all the more problematic. Woodruff keys are used on shafts from 0.25 to 2.5-in. diameter. They come in a range of sizes but require special key-cutting tools.

If you have tdc'd the engine and the cams are still in time then the bottom timing pulley hasn't moved, the crank pulley may have come loose and chewed its keyway out, this is very common for high revving RB's. The other thing it could be is i have seen a couple of Ross dampers fail and rotate the outer to the inner. You will need to do the crank bolt up to the correct torque or it will come loose again, this needs to be very tight, off the scale on allot of torque wrenches. The crank snout will be damaged but most good machine shops will reweld and grind it back true.

the balancer puller you have has that taper on one side. the taper should be placed towards the crankshaft. this in turn allows for a flat surface for the bolt with washer surface to stay flat 90° to the crankshaft. use only grade 8 or better puller bolts. tightened the main puller bolt down until it feels like you have enough pressure on it. then whack the puller bolt end with a hammer. you then tighten the bolt a little more and whack it again. the shock of the hammer along with the puller force will remove the the balancer. do not full swing the hammer to the point where you could damage the thrust bearings on the crankshaft.

I'm kinda curious with all the cars you have why you haven't played around with an LS swap in one?

Check out the crankshaft prep video from motive from a few days ago. Prp does some interesting stuff for them.

I got a way you can repair it on car, it'll still be servicable, and won't happen again. You'll have to get a template machined so you can drill into the edge of your crank and crank pulley and timing gear at the same time and put some dowels in the holes. It should be pretty cheap to have made if you got a drawing with measurements ready to go. If the crank is gonna be junk anyways it'll be a worth a shot to try it. You just gotta get the pulley off and realign it to the right orientation before drilling the dowel locations.

When one goes loose the other one goes loose also. Just have to check the torque on the crank bolt more often.

You can weld the cranck though?

That key is one of the things that concerned me putting together the RB , on JZ the crank/timing gear is welded to to the crank gear as so they dont come apart at high loads IE 500hp+, two step and high boost.

Is now a good time to use the REALLY BRITTLE -RB punchline?

I had similar issue with my old wrx. The teeth on the timing belt stripped off just where the crank pull sits and the crank was free spinning but the rest of the cams where not. The hole system was fine some how too. Slapped a new belt on and good to go. Just got lucky it some how stripped the teeth off the belt instead of snapping it cause everything stayed in a line other than the crank.

How you gonna put that crank collar on the new crank, but not on the R32 GTR engine in the R33? :(

At least you didn't snap the snout off the crank. I pulled appart an RB26 that had that happen.

I’ve welded the crank before and grind out the hole because if it’s walking around it probably blew out the slot on your crank.

Yeah that's crazy usually this kinda thing happens on diesel's had to be from when you dumped the clutch at the drag strip

I have fixed this problem without rebuilding the engine. If the key is brass all you need to do is get a new key put it into the key way and weld the part up that is worn then file it by hand to a tight fit and good as new., if it isn't brass get some and shape it to match the standard key size and do the same thing.

Do you have it on top dead center of the intake stroke or the exhaust stroke? That would throw it 50% off on the timing

machine the crank and the balancer fore a bigger key, you can also do a dubbel key instal, like one a blower car.

Flip the pulley puller part, that screws onto the threaded shaft that you put the bolts through over and you won't bend the bolts, bolt heads go against the flat side, not the pulley
@jsomething26 жыл бұрын
I saw the same thing. but wasn't going to commit. but yes, this is correct. flat side out. and use anti seize on the center main threads. if that doesn't work, buy a better quality puller. I've had to borrow a snap one. that one I could put a impact gun on it all day and not damage it.
