Funnily enough, the Walrus was actually made before Pingu's production fully began because it can be seen in a showreel by Pingu's creator, Otmar Guttman.

Hearing the original Pingu theme was incredibly nostalgic. I’d heard of this episode despite not seeing it (I grew up in the 2000s after the ban had been placed on it) but seeing it here it’s easy to tell what it is that makes it so creepy

This freaked me out as a kid, the way that giant walrus looks is just so unsettling. What’s even more horrifying is there’s a storybook version of this episode available. The fact it really exists when this episode freaked out kids is honestly beyond me. There’s readings available on this platform and also pictures on the Pingu Wiki on the Giant Walrus page.

As a kid, I was frequently terrified by not-very-scary things, and Pingu was one of them. Whenever I mention this to people nowadays, I always have to clarify that it was *not* because of this episode - the BBC wisely decided to omit this one from their VHS releases, which were my only exposure to Pingu at the time. Which was probably a good call on their part, because if I'd been scared before, that episode would have had me running for the hills. As it is, I didn't see it until I started mucking about on KZbin as a teenager, by which time I'd just about conquered my fear.

Off-topic, but in light of news that Doctor Who will premiere on 11 May, which is also the same night as the Eurovision grand final, have you thought about doing a video looking at all the times Doctor Who and Eurovision aired the same night? I’ve actually done the research and found that they’ve been 18 other occasions before this this year, which will be number 19. They’re two occasions where Doctor Who episodes were pushed back a week to accommodate Eurovision. My results: 1964: March 21 (Marco Polo ep 5) 1965: March 20 (the Web Planet ep 6) 1966: March 5 (the ark ep 1) 1967: April 8 (the faceless ones ep 1) 1968: April 6 (Fury From the Deep ep 4) 1969: March 29 (the space pirates ep 4) 1970: March 21 (the ambassadors of death ep 1) 1971: April 3 (the claws of Axis ep 4) 1972: March 25 (the sea devils ep 5) 1973: April 7 (planet of the Daleks ep 1) 1974: April 6 (the monster of Peladon ep 3) 1975: March 22 (Genesis of the Daleks ep 3) 2005: May 21 ( the Empty Child) 2006: May 20 (The Age of Steel) 2010: May 29 (Cold Blood) 2011: May 14 (the Doctor’s Wife) 2013: May 18 (the name of the Doctor) 2017: May 13 (Oxygen) 2024: May 11 (premiere). Series 3 and series 4 in 2007 and 2008 perspectively had a two week gap between episodes due to eurovision airing during their schedules.

Love Pingu. Definitely love stop motion generally for the craftmanship of it (and also the aesthetic), and fully with you on it looking better to me than CGI Music as the igloo flies away - ...I swear that sounds like a freaking 80s Doctor Who score. Oh it's the episode with the thing that looks like Frampt from Dark Souls. If you're going to continue to do these kids show deep dives, any chance on an episode delving into why we don't seem to see kids shows with as much on-screen death as The Animals of Farthing Wood had anymore? What was it about the 90s that made it ok to depict on screen death of animal protagonists in children's media in a way it apparently isn't ok now? What shows are giving modern kids the opportunity to 'Practice Grief' in the same way that my generation had the opportunity to do so via TAoFW?

@AdamMartyn you wanna know what makes the Walrus even creepier? there were three direct to VHS Korean released English dub, that were made to teach Korean kids how to speak English with the ending of each tape having a listen and repeat section. being Korean taught English, some sentences are REALLY badly lost in translation such as this episode, having the Walrus say things like: "hmm cute baby penguin" "hmm cute little boy, good smell!" like WTF?! 🤣 also the dub sometimes refers to Pingu's little sister Pinga as his brother, and calls his Seal friend Robby, Fur Seal. i think you can find all tapes on KZbin but don't quote me on that. if you have the chance to check out the dub, i can promise you its hilarious.
