The Lydian mode remains undefeated, none of those were ugly. It just takes dissonance sooooo well.
@OzielAlvesCavalcante3 жыл бұрын
Right? I mean, some of them could be called weird, but the question is: Is it because of the scale? They would become beautiful in other scales?
@0Enigmatic03 жыл бұрын
@@OzielAlvesCavalcante Dissonance can be very beautiful regardless. Shostokovich's paino trio number 2 is a great example, I feel both like I'm about to burst and can't stop headbanging every time I listen to it. The guitarist tim henson of Polyphia also uses a ton of diminished chords and tritones in recent recordings (not so much earlier stuff).

Shubh's is giving zombie vibes, REALLY dig it!! Also the "4/4" but it feels as if one beat is in slow motion, super cool!!

damn, that one from Aimee Nolte was actually hurting or rather "not releasing" one, like some weird soundtrack. Shubh's and Justice Cow's one i actually really liked, spicy but enjoyable! Tyler's one was also very very cool to my liking, i tried to find that "ugly", but couldn't :D

I must say as someone that has gotten sneak peaks of Justice's album and work, she is really under rated and an amazingly creative song writer

When Shubh was describing what he did, and how he did it I was like:"Shit, dude really went the extra mile on that one".

Shubh's definitely gave me those tingles on my neck. Gives me a heavy progressive rock vibe and I love progressive rock. It's my favorite one!

I... loved all of them? None of them sounded “ugly” to me. Menacing, maybe. Creepy, perhaps. Scary even. But ugly? Nah. I guess the concept of ugliness is too subjective. Not that I’m complaining, tho!

i dont think they mean bad ugly. They meant ugly as in odd and strange, its easy to make just bad music in any scale lol

Yeah, ugly music isn't inherently bad. Ugliness is subjective like you say, but not only that, considered by itself, all ugliness is is ugliness. Just because ugliness is considered bad in many contexts, that doesn't mean everything that's ugly is bad. There are entire genres of music that sound ugly, like goregrind and harsh noise, but neither genre is inherently bad music; whether something sounds bad is even more subjective than whether something sounds ugly, but even if you personally don't like any goregrind or harsh noise, you may still be able to appreciate their existence as ugly genres. It's not just music, either. The same goes for art, films, books, etc. as well. Taking it even further, it's like how just because a person is ugly, that doesn't necessarily mean they're a bad person. Ugly people can be nice, talented, happy, etc. and ugly music, art, films, books, etc. can be nice, take talent to make, and it can be enjoyable.

Ugly doesnt mean bad. Think about it. A face could be ugly but the person who wears it could be the kindest most loving person.

I love this I've watched it half a dozen times already, I know it comes with practice and experience but shubh's grasp of time signatures and unusual rhythms is just amazing, truly something to aspire to, awesome piece. Jessica's was intriguing, great contrast between the airy bits and the more aggressive sounding intense bits. Amy's piece was the very essence "unnerving" brought to life, very dark and tense, Tyler's piece *was* objectively beautiful, the B-section had a great kind of airy open vibe which contrasted nicely with that tense suspenseful finger picked a-section, definitely had the Vaimus vibe. And yours, Adam, just damn, again, it had that awesome contrast between the ugly 2nd intervals and that backing string/synth line, and the way it built up then kind of "deconstructed" itself to the bare bass at the end was a great ending. I don't think any of these were actually ugly, in essence they still had the lydian intrigue, which is exactly what I think the raised 4th brings to the lydian scale, it's not *just* a major scale, the absence of a perfect 4th brings a level of character that makes certain ideas not difficult to express but it makes you approach them differently. Awesome. Time to watch it again.

I actually like these more than most songs in lydian. Lydian often sounds too "nice" to me, its prettiness is what makes it sort of dull in the wrong hands. I especially like Shubh and Aimee's contributions. Aimee's is fascinatingly weird, I keep coming back to it. It inspires me to make weirder music. Shubh's is just a genuine jam and I'd gladly listen to a full version on purpose.

Rewatched this vid a couple of times: I instantly crushed on Tyler's (musiciswin) and Justice Cow's songs. Then after 2-3 more listens I really loved Amy's and Adam's songs for completely different reasons. I feel that Shubh's song was the most "ugly": some of the riffs were really great but then got torn apart by the odd timing. Really got you out of the groove. Honestly I'm not saying it was bad (you know you are great), but in terms of "ugly" I found the feeling that you could never get "in to" the riffs/grooves... "blue-ballish", frustrating and ugly ! I loved Justice Cow's song 100% for the vocals. Everything about them was great! I loved Amy's song for the arrangement and the mood. Absolutely sublime! I loved Adam's song for amazing bass sounds, the odd timings, the very well rounded composition. It was very physical with harsh bass sounds and the clashing notes! And lastly I would like to applaud Tyler for his amazing riffs, a really odd but satisfying solo and that tone tho!

Music might be the only artform I can think of were you can set out to make something deliberately unpleasant and still somehow end up with something charming and unironically enjoyable. Like the audio equivalent of creepy-cute.

God, this is amazing, every track is beautiful. I know the goal was "ugly," but maybe it's suggestive, like "ugly" is in the eye of the beholder. Or... In the ear of the behearer?
