Totally agree with Adam at 11:00 : when an improvising band say in advance that they're improvising, it creates a closer connection between performers and us in the audience because we're both paying extra attention moment to moment, wondering where this is going to go next. It's a more exciting experience for me as an audience member.
@ExplosionChimp3 жыл бұрын
This is Phish. Every show is like 2 1/2 -3 hours, about an hour will be pure improvised jamming. Most of their songs are designed to have a jam in them where a solo would be. As a result, every show is a completely different experience. Its why they have fans who follow them show to show and they professionally record and release every single show. Fans don't just collect their studio albums, they collect shows. They don't just have a favorite song by them, they have a favorite version from a specific show.
@SKennedy24413 жыл бұрын
As ExplosionChimp said, this is exactly why so many of us seek out The Grateful Dead and Phish. Everyone knowing that what's happening is on the spot is truly a special experience. First time seeing the Dead I was blown away by Drums/Space as much as anything else because it was such a singularly unique experience for everyone involved.

Plus other benefits, like easing anxiety by lowering expectations and setting them to what is actually happening. Maintaining a certain balance between order and chaos stabilizes things. Generally I am having the occasional thought that music is basically the creation of a framework of order to create a feeling of safety and then using that safety net to toy with chaos in a way that doesn't terrify so much. We could have a spiritual discussion over whether that is advisable or not recommended or, again, a matter of finding a balance.
@StrawDogsPu3 жыл бұрын
@@Dowlphin interesting definition of composition that I definitely agree with. It’s why guitarists have had success without much knowledge of theory in the past, they learn by ear but also embrace the chaos and take the step without knowing fully what it is

I had one experience in my life where I was playing improv - in Lord of the Rings Online. Someone on the market place was playing chord stuff with strings and I just felt compelled to join with my flute and one octave to improvize melody with. ... I am not even a musician. Total newb. But understandably it was an awesome feeling, having that flow of good company that puts you in the zone. (My brother came by at one point and later told me about it and that it was pretty good and then I learned he didn't see the user name, didn't realize it was me.) Sadly, while I wanted to stay in touch, I never heard from the guy again, even though he said he had given up hope with the game but I revived it. Sacred moments. So insanely rare in my case. Several jambands have also tried this in the last few years if you dig this kind of wild improv. Spafford had a whole tour where they were pretty much playing two songs for a 3.5 hour show, Umphrey's McGee played their tune Ringo for a whole set in 2019. Stuff like this is why I love jambands.
@BabyJesus5553 жыл бұрын
Yeah! What stuck out to me about this video and what I enjoy most of about getting into a particular jam band is listening for the hooks, melodies, progressions, and general sounds bands use to keep their improvisation grounded enough for them not to loose their place. I'm a fan of Phish and they are very good at employing riffs and fills that signal new directions for a jams. It keeps things fresh and exciting! Listen to Trey Anastasio talk about their "hey hole" practice method. That let's them jam essentially endlessly without it seeming to stale to their audience. For Phish, it's half the method, and half being comfortable playing together. I imagine its similar for many bands! It makes those moments where the band members play something very cohesive or something very different that much more exciting! Band Practice shows that improv isn't necessarily just nonsense if you choose to listen intently and have an arsenal of sounds to refer back to.

What a crazy cool way to play a show! The most fascinating part was to witness the balancing act of being passive enough to hear your band mates, but equally as aggressive when the tune needs direction. Too passive would create an undecisive ether of sounds. Too aggressive would be a mess of music that tripped on itself. This was masterfully done. Bravo!

Great stuff. Tones were great all around. This idea sounds very freeing to me.

I run a "100% improv" band since a few years and it's a blast, even if the results aren't this good. The harder part is explaining to everybody that "we don't have to play all at the same time". We rarely perform live, but I try to record every rehearsal. Sometimes there's good stuff in there.

Raw - is the word, in every sense. Because when it's raw it's real, no skin. That's what I love about dedicated jams, no matter the level. Music is a language everybody speaks, more or less...

The BEST gig I ever had was a weekly improvised trio with myself on guitar, and we had a bassist and drummer. We knew because our communication was so good we could pull it. We definitely spitballed ideas beforehand but we never really rehearsed. Three 90 minute sets. Just pure good times. Not jamming: performing.

This is the most special kind of music making. I'm incredibly envious that you got to experience this

One thing you might try is a "rotating conductor role"? (Obviously meaning taking turns to point to whose thread everyone else should try to support at any one time.) Excellent idea, anyway, and it sounds like the audience realised that and enjoyed it.

The rhythm section of my high school jazz band did the same thing. We formed a jam band, kept practicing long after the rehearsal, but took the songs into outer space on our own time. When we played out, we used this same philosophy. We'd use the head of a song as a starting point and then got "here" as soon as we could, I think we figured it'd give us and the audience a "clean start," and we were so on point with each other, we could reference other songs mid song. I know that's a thing jam bands do on the regular (only one of us was already into jam bands at the time), but this was 2003 and the rest of us had no idea that was a thing, we were just having fun with it. I wish I lived in the timeline where that band kept going, even just a little bit longer.
