Some things I forgot to mention in the video: - I like how in the 1996 film, Harriet takes the news about Emma and Mr. Knightley hard, it’s more realistic. - The Highbury scenes in the 1996/1997 TV film were filmed in Lacock, Wiltshire, which I visited while studying abroad. You can watch that vlog here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5uUg6qIl7iiq68 - I also went to the house used for Randalls in the 2020 Emma! The Lowsley-Williams family who owns the house gave us a tour, served us scones, and let us play with their dogs. That vlog is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJKZnpawgMahrcU - When Knightley takes Emma to the seaside at the end of 2009, I almost cried. HE LOVES HER SO MUCH IT’S BEAUTIFUL!!! - In retrospect, I think 2009 Jane Fairfax is my favorite, and I did not mention my favorite Mrs. Elton which is 2020. I think the others look a little too old for the role. - Johnny Flynn in the 2020 film does the “badly done” scene the best, imo. He does that “I’m not mad, just disappointed” thing perfectly. Northam and Miller are also good though, and I love them all.

I don't understand why people dislike the 2009 adaptation, it's my favorite.

Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller is par excellence.

I used to love the Gwyneth version of Emma, but when I rewatched it last year, it just didn't hold up for me. Very disappointing. I also used to dislike the Kate Beckinsale version, but I liked it much more on that rewatch! Weird... I think my favorite is the 2009 miniseries overall.

The 2009 version and Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller is perfect! 💗💗 JLM is my Mr. Knightley and Mr. Knightley is my favorite Austen hero. I agree with you on Emma's hair in that version. I seem to keep hoping that there will be more curls appearing around her face. LOL. I watch it often. I agree with you on Emma 2020!!!! She was TOO mean! Emma is not a bitch, she's self centered--there is a difference and that matters. I kind of felt the comedy in 2020 was a bit overdone. And I am with you the nosebleed scene - I HATED IT. It did need to be played straight and I was irritated that they screwed up the scene. This was a fun video! Good job!

My favorite is the Kate Beckinsale. I saw it first, so maybe it set the standard, but I thought the casting was perfect, even for Mark Strong. He’s 16 yrs older and has very high morals, but his jealousy of Frank Churchill is readily apparent. I also think he’s dashingly handsome. Mr Woodhouse is hilarious, Jane Fairfax is sedate and pure (too perfect=just right!). Frank us a cad, but a delightful one, with a conscience. Augusta is perfectly obnoxious, Harriet simple, sweet and gullible. I loved it, perhaps also because it’s true to the book. Now I have to watch the Johnny Lee Miller one. I didn’t like Gwyneth Paltrow because I only saw the actress, not the character, Northam looked too young to be 16 yrs her senior, and Toni Collette looked too old. Didn’t see the 2020, but I don’t like the look of Mr. Knightly. Not at all attractive. Enjoyed the rundown of all of them, even though we disagree!❤

I liked how you used all the different videos from different adaptations in your plot summary! Well done.

I liked the old one 1972 as all the people looked like how they were suppose to. Harriet was blonde and plump, Emma had hazel eyes. etc.

Can we just talk about how the servants acted in 2020....made me crack up. a lot of your thoughts are valid in your critic. Thank you.

I love that you’ve started this series! I’m looking forward to the other adaptations you will discuss. I haven’t seen the TV movie version, or the 2009 tv series yet, but I’ve had them on my radar. I adore the 2020 version, though I agree with you about the nosebleed scene. 😊

I do like the 2020 a lot, that scene just did NOT do it for me. It was the last movie I saw before COVID and I remember sitting in the theater thinking "Wtf? No, go back, go back!" 😂I probably should've mentioned this in the video but the 1996, 2009, and 2020 adaptations are all on HBO Max and I found the TV film on KZbin!

Most excellent! I barely remember the 1996 version, but I do want to see the TV series now...and I love Miranda Hart in anything! Great series idea, even for my least favorite Austen :PPP #fightme #idlose

I know this is an old video but I need to make a correction. Harriet didn’t encounter Roma people in the forest. The travelers referred here are white European, not Romani. Other than that thanks for the video. I always enjoy discussions of Austen and the adaptations.

I'm so excited about this video series! I have always loved watching and comparing Austen adaptations. Have you seen the 1972 BBC miniseries of Emma?

No! Is it any good?

@@jackiereadsandwrites It's okay. Probably my least favorite of the Emmas. The production values aren't great (but that's pretty standard for all of the TV adaptations prior to the '90s). Funnily enough, I found the portrayal of Mr. Woodhouse in the 2020 version to be reminiscent of the one from 1972. (Very skinny and actually very spry and nimble).

@@larzinthelibrary2530 interesting. I didn’t even know there was a 1972 version until recently.
