Adapting an Oregon CS1500 electric chainsaw to operate with a Panther 20" guidebar and ¼" Mini Chain
WHY CHANGE THE BAR AND CHAIN ON THIS SAW?
The Panther bar is longer (20" compared to the 18" of the Oregon bar as supplied with the chainsaw).
The narrower gauge of bar & chain (O.043" instead of 0.050") maximises available chainsaw power & produces a smaller kerf. These factors are significant when using an electric saw which is not as powerful as a petrol driven one.
The chain is designed to cut more efficiently than the default "Home User" PowerSharp general purpose chain supplied with the saw.
Overall the Panther bar plus chain should be a better option for milling wood. I have successfully used the default Oregon bar and Powersharp chain using the CS1500 saw in a portable chainsaw mill and I plan to use the saw in the mill with the Panther bar and chain which should deliver an improved performance.
I am grateful to Rob Dyer of Chainsaw Bars for suggesting that I try the Panther Mini Bar and Chain with the Oregon CS1500 Chainsaw and for much additional helpful advice. The Panther Mini Bar & Chain plus Makita sprocket can be purchased on-line from Rob at: www.chainsawbars.co.uk

The default PowerSharp chain is indeed excellent for general use. However for the occasions I want to use the saw in a portable chainsaw mill the Panther Mini chain gives a much better performance.

keep coming back for a look, good stuff if your looking at any sort of milling as far as i can see the cs1400 would work too on the upgrade and dont have to worry about the sharpener inside unless anyone know different .

With the CS1500 saw, I leave the sharpener in place when using either the Panther Mini Chain or the Stihl equivalent (3670 PM3) chain, and this would certainly apply to the CS1400. The sharpener must never be used with anything else other than the Power Sharp chain as it is a completely different design to "conventional" chain which the sharpener would seriously damage.

Hello Tim, Very nice and step by step process for changing the blade assembly. I really appreciate how much effort you are putting for all this. It is really very knowledgeable and helpful to me. Quick question for you - I have an Oregon electric CS1500 chainsaw with 18" blade. Can it be replaced with 24" or larger blade assembly. From where I can buy it and of what brand? Could you please suggest on this. Thanks.

Thanks for commenting. Apart from the default Oregon 18" blade I have only used the Panther 20" blade. However, I have been in e-mail correspondence with someone in the USA who has successfully used a 32" narrow kerf Cannon bar (See the Cannon website www.cannonbar.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/page-4-SuperMini-CSM.pdf). These take Lo Pro chain which can be used with the default CS1500 chainsaw sprocket (used with the PowerSharp chain). He also sent a link with a photograph showing the CS1500 fitted with this bar using a milling rig (See photos.app.goo.gl/9JZs6HP7REWne2m49).

Hi Tim, was looking at your website today. I am so impressed by how much research you put in to those electric chainsaws and their capabilities. Have you have a chance to do much milling with your CS1500 yet? I'm wondering how it has held up and if you recommend using that saw to others?

Many thanks Brad, yes I have done quite a bit of milling of Oak, Apple, Yew and most recently Horse Chestnut. Have added a couple of new videos earlier this year which show the use of a different bar and chain. Overall it works well for me.

I own a CS1500 and would love to be able to mill some lumber with it. What was your setup when you milled with the Oregon bar and Powersharp chain? Did you use a certain brand or model of Alaskan mill, and if you did, did you require any modifications to the Oregon bar?

Hi John, The Alaskan Mill I used (Royston) was the cheapest I could find. It is still available on Ebay (UK). One 6mm additional hole was drilled in the Oregon bar. For more details see my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmWUl3ljYtClfLM and also see my website www.pettigrews.org.uk/odg/project-06-chainsaw-mill.htm. Do contact me if you require any further assistance.

Good idea How do you prevent the chainsaw oil getting clogged up with saw dust ? Thanks
@TimPettigrew1
@TimPettigrew1 Жыл бұрын
Not entirely sure what you mean. I haven't had a problem with clogging as the oil feeds directly into the guidebar behind the chain and is driven outwards by centrifugal force which prevents ingress of sawdust. Hope that makes sense?

can i adapt a 24 bar with the sprocket you installed on your cs 1500? i dont want to spend the money just to shift 2 inches ,i need to mill some logs but my 18 is so small for them .thanks

I'd need to know more about the bar you intend using as that dictates the chain specification and the sprocket required to drive it

I have just bought one of these saws and I want also to get a longer bar for it. What about an even longer bar? Do you know of a longer oprtion?

Not sure if the CS1500 would have the power for a bar above 20". The 20" bar uses thinner chain than that of the default 18" bar (1.1mm as against 1.3mm for the default Power Sharp chain). The guy I would ask would be Rob Dyer at Chainsaw Bars (A UK company)
