The Spanish Inquisition is one of the most exaggerated events in history. That figure of 2000 people executed, is not by one guy or in one lifetime. Its over almost 300 years. Only about 1% of the people tried by the SI ended up being executed. By comparison, the Aztecs, poor victims of the Spaniards, killed 50 times as many people, in one day, as the SI did in its nearly 300 year history. The SI was much more brutal, specifically because it was essentially run by the secular political authorities. The regular Church inquisition had fairly strict rules that disallowed severe torture, and for the time, was very fair. This stuff is almost always severely mis represented.

Nowadays every cardinal is a very experienced bishop or priest but back then it was hardly unusual. 3. At least this pope knew what Catholic teaching was and wanted to defend it.
