This might be one of the Best tutorial I've seen for diy air dry clay. You gave clear instructions and even told us how many days it takes for the clay to fully cure. I really liked how you compared both the cook and non-cook method with their pros and cons. You deserve more subs, there's no way you're this underrated!

Also, can you reduce the time or curing by using a hair dryer or some sort? I'm making a sculpture for my gf's project which is due on Tuesday. I'm planning on making the sculpture a bit big so i kinda worry it wouldn't cure on the day of submission.

if its possible for you to use aluminum foil or paper as a base and just use clay on the surface of your sculpture that could help reduce the time it takes to cure. putting my works in front of an electric fan helps it cure faster. using hair dryer sounds possible but not sure how well that works so i suggest you try that with a small amount of clay first.

Hello, thank you very much for the awesome tutorial. I tried your recipe and even though it didn't pass the raindrop test, it dried really strong and could easily remedy the cracks and what not. My second batch became too soft and I made blocks of them at first, then made sculptures via carving. But I have a problem with molds during the rainy season here in the Philippines. I panicked and ended up throwing away my airdry sculptures and the few blocks I wanted to carve. How do I prevent molds from forming? Was there a way to remove the molds from the sculptures?
@zainclayarts
@zainclayarts 3 жыл бұрын
thank you! glad it worked well for you 😊 as for the molds, adding white vinegar or lemon juice should help prevent them. making sure your hands and anything that comes into contact with the clay is clean will prevent that from happening too. hope this helps! im from ph too and never really experienced my clays getting molds even though they've been on storage for a long time. and unfortunately, you can't really save clays that already has molds. even if you remove them, they will just grow back :/

Thank you for putting the full list of measurements for making both the white clays, onto the internet via KZbin. This video has helped me a whole lot. I really look forward to creating some wonderful things with my grandchildren using the clay. I have a few questions for you:- 1) Do you suggest only creating small projects with the air dry clay..or can you do larger projects, such as vases, in air dry clay? 2) Do you advise on adding the poster paint to the air dry clay only when I plan to use the clay immediately? 3) Is it safe to seal the finished objects I make out of both types of clay by using a glaze only, or should I seal the object first with a spray on sealant, and then glaze it; if I wanted it to hold water for example? Thank you in advance for answering these questions. You are very kind!
@zainclayarts
@zainclayarts 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Carly for a wonderful feedback! I'm glad you find it helpful 😊 To answer your questions, 1. I personally use it for small projects but I believe you can use it to make larger ones! It holds pretty well especially if the piece is solid. Might take awhile to completely cure it though so might be better to work on it in stages. 2. Yes, definitely. unless you can secure it in a completely airtight container which may allow you to store it for a long time. It will harden quite fast after it's mixed with any paint. 3. I haven't used this clay for any purpose involving water but I've read from other artists that air dry clay in general, no matter the type, is really not advisable to be used with anything that involves water like a pot or a vase even though it's already sealed with glaze or coated with varnish. The clay may turn soft again after awhile.

@@zainclayarts Thank you so much Zain. You are very kind to get back to me so quickly. Do you have any large projects coming up? A thought of mine was to make a nativity set and/farm yard set for my grandaughter. We could play together if it works. I shall be experimenting with different things to make the farm stables or the stable where Jesus was born for her. I thought she might like them, one or the other for Christmas. @@zainclayarts oh how kind of you. I dont know if I would have the confidence to show anything I made but feel free to use the idea for yourself sometime. It would make a great video if you just built the stable in one video and some of the characters perhaps over two or three videos. I would absolutely watch that for sure. Maybe out it to the vote one year. I debated creating the stable out of a cardboard shoe box and coloured paper and some acrylics. I was planning to use strips of fabric to make the characters clothes and make a star out of cardboard, tinsel and a battery run candle. However, I have yet to successfully make the clay yet hahaha. Big dreams but I really want to try. It will be fun just to give it a go. I think i just need the cornflour and that's it. I will have to get my husband to pick me up some. I'm disabled and house bound at present you see. I'm sorry, i'm chattering on. Forgive me. It's been really lovely speaking with you tho. Thank you for your very kind offer. some use a damp cloth to cover unused clay while they work. beware of lints though since they can get stuck in the clay. but if you're having problems with the clay you're actively sculpting with, i find it better to use slightly undercooked clay (be sure it's not super soft tho) as it will give you more time to work with (consider the shrinkage) or just use a bit of water to soften the clay every now and then.

What a brilliant and lovely tutorial, thank you! I'm thinking about making a square plant pot, do these clays dry flat when rolled thin (maybe ½-1cm), or does it bow/curl?
@zainclayarts
@zainclayarts Жыл бұрын
thank you Rachel! glad you appreciate it 💖 i don't really recommend using air dry clay for plant pots or anything with moisture since it's possible that the clay might soften even if it's sealed. however, you can use it as an outer layer or for decoration for like a plastic pot for example. to answer your question though, yes it can dry flat but it depends on the way you let it cure. make sure to flip it several times to let all areas get exposed to air while it's drying.
@AuntieRachelsChaoticKitchen

@@zainclayarts perfect, thank you! My plan is to use it as an "outer"; have a pot inside it, and possibly even glue a thick plastic bag inside

that depends on how dry your overcooked clay is. if you're unsure, there's really no harm in mixing a lot of undercooked clay with it. your clay will just be softer and you can just air dry it a little to get the right consistency.

Hi, just a quick question. Thank you for the brilliant tutorial, but, I have been making a polymer air dry "picture" which will be attached to slate. I did not add colour as I made it, as I wanted to be able to paint shades, making it "pop" out.... is this ok to do? I have a varnish made for polymer to complete it. Should I continue, or start again with mixing the colours to clay before shaping it? Thanks

yes that's totally fine! for the varnish though, i think it's best to search if your varnish is compatible with the paint you're using coz sometimes varnishes can dissolve the paint and smudge it all over :)

glad you find it helpful! not really sure but the holes are probably because of air bubbles stuck in the clay. you need to press it pretty hard while sculpting to get rid of those. cracking can be caused by several factors (like how the clay cured, condition of the clay, etc)

Very impressive production quality. Your English is fine! Don't worry about it. What about shrinkage with your clay? If you cut a piece 2 inches long, how long is it when it dries?
@zainclayarts
@zainclayarts 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the feedback! 💖💖 Shrinkage is about 10%-20% and it depends on how wet the clay is when you let it dry. I usually add 1-2mm allowance for my works to make up for the shrinkage when I want them to be exact in size :)

Very nice and precise video. Thank you for this. I tried the cooked clay and while drying the sculpt is getting curved. How do I get that fixed.
@zainclayarts
@zainclayarts 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! 💖 The clay has to be entirely exposed to air while drying. If your piece has a flat back, you may use a mesh or silk screen to dry it. Flip the piece from time to time to prevent it from curving. If the piece is rounded, you may hang it or stick it to a stand if possible to keep its shape. :)

Hm I'm not exactly sure about this as I usually just make enough amount of clay to prevent cases where I have to store it and leave it unused for a long time but I think it can last for about 3-6 months depending on how it's stored. If you want it to last longer, make sure to store it in a tightly sealed container. I would suggest a jar while also keeping it in a ziplock for extra security. I have a japanese-brand air dry clay stored in a jar and it's still in pretty good condition after being stored for more than a year now. :)

molds are tricky and no one really knows what causes it since several factors come into play like humidity, weather conditions, how it's stored and more. it rlly varies since we all live differently and in diff areas. personally, i never experienced my clay getting molds and i use water a lot while sculpting. the vinegar i use for my diy clay helps prevent it too. most ppl suggests using distilled but i just use tap water with no problems.
