Nothing like some old school hot rod basics from 1993! Don’t forget to try the bag of ice on intake manifold trick too. Great job LMR. I’m currently restoring a 91 GT convertible and these videos have been extremely helpful. You guys have been a fantastic resource for the Mustang community.

Great video!!! I bought my 94 gt from a guy who claimed the engine was worn out. 112k miles ran and started ok. I went to do this "tune up" and when I went to check timing I noticed it was at 10degs timing but the balancer was wonky. Turns out the balancer had separated and had been moving. Got a new balancer installed, timed it properly 14degs, underdrive pulleys, cold air intake and the thing runs great!!

Bump it up to 18° and give it a shot, I picked up 15-20hp from 2-6,000rpm VS the stock 10°, people will swear up and down 18 is to much but iron had sbf motors like 38° total timing usually, it worked good in my case!

I remember doing this back in the day with my bone stock 86 GT. I also had south side bars, 4.10 gears, March underdrive pulleys, fat and skinny weld wheels with bf goodrich drag radials, off road hpipe, 2 chamber flowmasters, bbk throttle body, bbk shorty headers, and that car went low 13s. Not only did it add a noticeable amount of power it added that through most of the powerband so this would actually make a pretty big difference at the track and on the street. The 10 min tuneup works and it works well.

@fastidious93444 жыл бұрын
This was a great idea however there was one major mistake; you should have made a new baseline run on the same day. Bumping the timing on a ‘fox body’ from the factory 10ish degrees to 13-14 will typically give you 2 to 2.5 tenths and around 2 mph at the track in the 1/4, meaning it’s worth 15-20HP ALONE. I’ve owned about 20 of these cars over the years and raced many of them in the early ‘90’s when they were still selling them on the Ford lots (I also worked at a Ford dealer). Case in point, my ‘87 GT 5-spd was stuck running a best of 15.06 @ 94.1 mph when a guy at the track asked me what my timing was set at, I told him I had no idea, he checked it and it was set @ 7 degrees from Ford, bumped it to 13 degrees & it ran a 14.69 @ almost 97 mph the very next pass, & I was hooked & the rest is history lol.
@superdriver7773 жыл бұрын
It's a long story how, but my car had been running on 0 degrees of timing advance for a long time before I realized it (it's a champ to have kept running at all lol). This weekend I swapped the TFI for a nice new one, and set the timing to 14° with 93 octane... The difference is night and day. Runs smoother, pulls much harder, and uses *much* less gas lol
@mikegager4 жыл бұрын
unbolting the stock fan at the track was always good for a tenth and 1 mph in the 1/4 for my car also my car ran best with 17 degrees initial timing so dont be afraid to try more than 14

Could you give the horsepower numbers for the rear wheel and fly-wheel. Because at the factory they rate it at the fly-wheel but I'm thinkin your just quoting the rear wheel. I don't know what the original rear wheel horspower numbers were for this car.

Are there actually any Foxbodys out there with an air silencer and a paper filter still in them? I doubt you'll find one at 10* timing either. While the 10 minute tune-up was great for nice gains, people watching this now are about 30 years late to the game. Shortbelt was good for the track only unless you wanted your PS fluid all over the place.

i thought the cobras have the high flow gt40 heads. So if you have stock 5.0 heads you prob wont see much in gains.

i'm a chevy guy, so be nice, shouldn't adding 4 degrees across the board add a lot more then 4HP? Also, is the shorter serpentine worth it for an extra 3 HP or so? I'm not trying to be a dick, something doesn't add up. I've also never met a car guy who didn't claim his or her car was "underrated from the factory" Really interesting video. I'll have to check out your channel more :) Stay safe
@ryanjamieson87794 жыл бұрын
it's RWHP, your brain doesn't add up. Also, car is rated at 235 crank hp, and made 222 to the wheels, pretty obvious it's underrated.
@JoeHynes2844 жыл бұрын
Ryan Jamieson so you are saying one degree yielding one HP is correct? I stand by my statement that nearly every car guy thinks their car was “underrated from the factory” Though I’m open to see actual evidence to the contrary
@JoeHynes2844 жыл бұрын
@chris koepp my point was, I think it is probably more reasonable to assume that the error rate of this guys dyno, plus the variation of each engine Ford made, plus any correction errors such a DA, are more likely to account for this discrepancy then Ford intentional underrating a few HP, which would not have made marketing sense for Ford. And let us not forget, a dyno can "say" whatever the operator wants it to "say"...
@midnight3473 жыл бұрын
@@JoeHynes284 I promise you man 93 cobras were def underrated. If they really made 235 hp they would be lucky to hit 200 on a dyno if even that likely less. I have seen lots of them dynoed back in the day they commonly make 220-230 to the tires stock. They were most certainly underrated. It also put down damn near 290 torque and is only rated 285 or 290 or something at the flywheel. I assure you these cars were underrated its very obvious. Just like the 03 cobras rated 390 and some put close to that to the tires...I seen one lay down 381 bone stock. 2000 cobra r same thing. When it's a few hp here or there you can scream dyno error etc etc. This thing is easily making 30 or more hp than it should be based on its rating. That is alot when you're barely over 200 to begin with.

Is that worth getting rid of the power steering, the car wouldn't be that much faster to realize that this car feels like shit now because I have no power steering.kind of a waste of time.Just buy new heads because that's what All fox mustangs need .The money you waste on bolt ons isn't worth it when you think you're saving money and you realize you just spent Too much on an exhaust and CAI like most mustang owners do when The stock fox 5.0 heads are restrictive and don't allow for any gain from the mods you made.Just put your money in to something worth while instead of wasting it on all this pep boys stuff.
