Just now installed this, works seamlessly in my daughters 2018 4Runner TRD ORP. Got quotes from a couple of local car audio shops, was quoted $ 750 to $1400. This $170 purchase plus about 1 hour of fiddling with the the car plus a scraped knuckle later, installed and IT WORKS!!! Just 1 additional step- It would not fit in the cubby shown in the video, so I ran the cables to the space that you can access from the left wall of the glove compartment box. Wrapped it in an old hand towel to keep it from rattling around. Thank you for this video, my baby girl will be happy.

@@jma3586 thanks for replying. Quick question, does your system have SiriusXM? I have a 2016, when I check on the settings the AVN says Panasonic, but the other setting EXT BOX says Pioneer. Does yours shows like that too?

I stumbled upon your video while considering a different, aftermarket head unit. I had actually bought the CARABC upgrade 2 years ago but I've never installed it. Their original design actually involved you unplugging the film plug for the display and a couple other things that made it a little intimidating. After looking, it turns out I have the same exact one you installed. After watching your video, I think it's worth a shot to try it. If I get to the point where I feel I need a larger display, then I'll dump extra money. Thanks for the video!

Just ordered one to try in my 2016 4Runner. I went from a 2021 RAV4 to this and I travel a lot so was missing CarPlay for navigation. The reviews are questionable but to me most of them seem like installation error or the unit just not being compatible with the car. Also it’s Amazon so very easy to return and isn’t really risky trying it out! Also like someone said there’s a $20 coupon right now! I’m interested in any updates you have and thanks for the awesome video!

It works great. It gives you car play in the 4Runner. Just make sure it’s not a pioneer. Second you won’t be able to use your radio. I use Spotify for music. I usually don’t listen to news shows anyway. And taking apart and reassembly is not bad. For me it was good choice because I didn’t want to spend any money on the actual radio and this is way cheaper option. Later I may but for now it’s a good choice.

Yes, get yourself a plastic pry tool for removing dash part. DO NOT USE METAL S SCREW DIVERS ON THE PLASTIC. You only need it for the bottom two part. You think that you going to break them but your not. Once there off the four screw are right above. Give it a small tuck and it’ll come right out. Then the rest is just plug and play. They make it easy for you.

When entering the radio’s diagnostic it did not have the radio’s manufacturer. I bought it bling, fortunately after taking it apart I noticed had the Panasonic unit. It is a bit glitchy and doesn’t seem to have a reset button, so when it’s glitched, I e had to reboot the car to fix the car play. Glitches: 1- Map guidance killed other sounds, like music or KZbin. Requiring a reset. 2- Having guidance on then turning the car off and returning to the car and attempting to load KZbin while the map guidance tried to continue messed up the video. Turning the car on and off fixed the issues, rebooting from within settings also fixed issues. Phone call quality through CarPlay is superior to just Bluetooth.

Yes I have this on my 2016 4Runner limited - works pretty good, only complaint is phone call quality, sometimes ppl complain and have to switch phone to the Bluetooth connection to the original car radio or phone speaker - pretty annoying

I would say this has more to do with the resolution of the screen itself than what I have installed. I’m sure my camera doesn’t help either. It’s kind of funny about LED lighting. Thank you for the comment!

Have you tried the USB or wired CarPlay? Also we use CDs and is that easy to use as well? It seems like it has been working for you 2 months but just curious!

No difference when using CDs as before. Just insert it and play, then switch to CarPlay to see the phone. You can double tap the volume knob quickly to switch in between CarPlay and the OEM Toyota interface.

@@Chaos31 He followed up in the same video, it works great. I had a friend install this same kit, and it works great. You can switch back and forth between the OEM and CarPlay UIs by double tapping the volume knob.

It does use the OEM microphone but the OEM Bluetooth connection is much better quality than the CARABC units call quality … ppl sometimes complain about the quality, sounds static or like I am far away … have to switch to phone speaker or back to Bluetooth OEM connection :/

Great video. One question what is the USB for ? Could you connect a hard drive full of music MP3s and hear the files? Also, what front camera is recommended to plug in the extra camera rca plug?

The usb is usually for your phone not a external hard drive with 35,000 mp3's from 2005. I mean it's possible though.
