It is often helpful to be able to refer to pages within a large library of documents by unique page numbers. Bates numbers, named after inventor Edwin G. Bates of New York City, are sequential page numbers which were historically applied using a mechanical stamp but now software is available to do it paperlessly.
This video explains how to use Adobe Acrobat Pro to Bates number a collection of pdf documents contained in a library of folders in Windows, and then import those Bates numbers into an Excel spreadsheet listing the documents in the library.
