Just as a note - This can also be used on networked drives. It will not take a unc path (\\yourdrive) but if you assign a drive letter to a folder, you can do a CD /d v:\music music for me is on my synology NAS and I mapped V to the folder. I also wanted to list the bit rate of all the MP3 files and the column is called Bit Rate in explorer. Filelist does not like the space so I used bitrate and it worked. So it looks like any column that explorer can display can be used. Thanks for this very good tutorial.

This executeable is something I have been needing for YEARS. Up until now I had been using dir to output to a text file and parsing the data manually in Excel. However I have never been able to find a good way to get the duration ("Length") for the media data. It is a bit confusing with the way the list of details desired is layed out (ie: I couldnt find FullPath in the list AND I was unsure whether to use just Length or System.Media.Duration or both (Length-System.Media.Duration). Yet when i saw the 1st comment where the person was asking for Length and your answer, I kinda figured it out. All in all this is a great video. Short, to the point, and gets the job done well. You have done a very great service for me personally, and to the world; and for that, I thank you so very much. God Bless

instead of executing CMD from the windows menu, type "cmd" and enter in the directory name and it will open a command window already in that folder.

Wow, thanks Phil, excellent trick I did not know that! To make sure it is super super clear to everybody else, navigate to the folder in Windows Explorer containing the files and subfolders you want to run the FileList operation on, and then in the address bar of that Windows Explorer window, type "cmd". That will open up the command prompt with the path / directory already set to what you want it to be. Thanks again Phil.

Thanks for making this Excellent tutorial. For unknown reason, I can only do 6000 entries at a time. For instance my library has 33000 songs. When I execute the cmd with 3 columns, filename, size and length (_FileList.exe /USECOLUMNS NAME,SIZE,System.Media.Duration > _flacmp3nfo.txt) excel only takes about 6000 entries and not in alphabetical order. So I have to split my library to chunk of 6000 files at a time. Anyway, it little bit more work but still way better that without having the song duration. 😁

Is there a way that you've found to extract all the metadata that is available? Once I had that I could parse what I need in Excel. Hello! When I check their documentation and website, it shows far less column choices than you have in the description. Do you know specifically where the full list can be found? I'm specifically trying to find size on disk vs just size, since it my case I have some files that are corrupted and their size vs size on disk is much different and this tool might help me identify the files I need to correct. Thanks!

To get a full list of all of the metadata variables that could be pulled from various types of files (i.e. a full list of supported shell columns), you can use the “/PRINTSHELLCOLUMNLIST” parameter i.e. put FileList.exe in a folder and then change to that directory on the command line and then run the following command on the command line: FileList.exe /PRINTSHELLCOLUMNLIST > outputmike.txt

The folder names are in the "Full path" column, see 6:15 in the video. You can separate that data out using "text to columns" with backslash as the delimeter.

Is there anyway to include the date files were moved into the current folder location (e.g. the indexed folder) as one of the metadata captured?
@MichaelDewTechTips
@MichaelDewTechTips 2 жыл бұрын
The "Date Created" data point (as distinct from "Date Modified") is typically the time that the file was created in the current location i.e. "date modified" is when the file contents were modified, and "date created" is when this copy in this folder was created. So you could just pull out date created data.

@@paulshapiro6119 you could also just add the "date created" field to the display of Windows Explorer (right click on the headings and then add that field) and then sort by that column directly in windows explorer by double clicking on the column heading i.e. may not need to export the data to achieve your current goal

Thanks for the tutorial. Is it possible to use it without pasting the exe file in the same folder? I mean, keeping the exe file in a separate folder and extracting the metadata of a separate folder. Not having to paste the exe in a folder every time you have to extract data? Thanks in advance.

No, I think that every time you have to put the .exe file in the top level of the folder of the folder tree you want to extract the data from. You could use a macro to write in the file into the necessary folder and then delete it out afterwards, but that requires some complex macros

Otherwise the video and the original one were vary useful, thank you.
@MichaelDewTechTips
@MichaelDewTechTips 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I have never found JAM software to cut off file data, even when running it on thousands of files, but perhaps your file data was more detailed that what I have used it for. I have never tried to retrieve tags or comments, but as per the instructions for that software in the help file you can modify the columns of the output table, so it may be that you just have to change the code to make it spit out that additional data. To get a full list of all of the metadata variables that could be pulled from various types of files (i.e. a full list of supported shell columns), you can use the “/PRINTSHELLCOLUMNLIST” parameter i.e. put FileList.exe in a folder and then change to that directory on the command line and then run the following command on the command line: FileList.exe /PRINTSHELLCOLUMNLIST > outputmike.txt It seems to me that comments and tags are both on the list i.e. System.Comment and System.Keywords, but it may be those commands will not actually extract what you are looking for...

Hi Mike, This video really helps to extract metadata of huge volumes of files. Could you please help me how I can list folder name of each file into a column. for example , my file system is like saving employees personal docs. each folder name is employee id. So I wanted to list down the employee ids as well with the filenames. 1234 --> identity.doc 5678 --> passport.doc The above two folders 1234 and 5678 exists as follows E:\files\1234\identity.doc and E:\files\5678\passport.doc

If you are able to get the data into excel (although it sounds like it may be too much data for excel to manage) you should be able to create a column that lists just the folder names using regular excel functionality e.g. mid, left, right, formulas, or use "text to columns" tool on the data tab of the ribbon and separate by backslash.

Thanks for this Michael. I've found it useful but not having much luck applying it to my needs. I followed your video and copied the commands with success. But I need to get a list of mp4 files in a directory including their files name and length (in hh:mm:ss) as listed in the "length column in windows. And I saw the entry you made for length as Length - System.Media.Duration. What command do i need for this? I thought it would be "FileList.exe /USECOLUMNS NAME,FULLPATH,EXTENSION,LENGTH,System.Media.Duration > test1.txt" but I get the error " Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified: NAME,FULLPATH,EXTENSION,LENGTH,System.Media.Duration" Any tips please?

@MichaelDewTechTips Жыл бұрын
Are you sure you have the file Filelist.exe in the same folder as containing the files that you want to extract the data from? Have you been able to extract duration information from any mp4 files? I confirm that I have been able to extract duration data from mp4 files (although not all mp4 files have that data available).
@emn8or
@emn8or Жыл бұрын
Hi @MichaelDewTechTips thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, the .exe file is in the same directory and I have been able to extract other info as per your example, but when I add the length command, I get those errors as listed. The mp4 files definately do have info of their duration in the windows explorer culumn. I just ried agin by leaving out the word "LENGTH" and using the command FileList.exe /USECOLUMNS NAME,FULLPATH,EXTENSION,System.Media.Duration > test1.txt My example mp4 files were this time 3 files 60secs, 90secs and 120 secs long. And I do get a workable result now of "Name","Full Path","Extension","Length" "01=060secs.mp4","C:\Transfers\test\01=060secs.mp4",".mp4","600110000" "02=090secs.mp4","C:\Transfers\test\02=090secs.mp4",".mp4","900060000" "03=120secs.mp4","C:\Transfers\test\03=120secs.mp4",".mp4","1200000000" So it does work now but only when I omit "LENGTH" and gives me a value of length with a lot of traling numbers. (ie the 60 sec file reads "600110000"). I guess I can use this and omit the trailing digits in Excel unless I can come up with a betther solution. Thanks again for your assistance.
