Thanks for the tutorial. I think I like the Technicolor log better as a starting point. Maybe if your'e a professional James Miller's log set may give you that extra quench of dynamic range you need.

Thanks for sharing, and I agree. If you are doing your own correction / building your owN LUTs, Technicolor is a good starting point imo. Since I work with several camera brands, I actually use James Miller's C-Log 3 profile on M series and apply Paul Leeming's Rec 709 LUT (he just released a new Canon update) as a starting point. I then find it easier to get a closer match from Canon to Sony and Panasonic taking that route, but you definitely can get there from Technicolor. Thanks again for checking out my tutorial!

Cool video, thank you! I’d like to ask which colour space should I choose with the James Miller C-Log? Rec or Log or it doesn’t matter. I’m using an M50MarkII with DaVinci Resolve. Thanks!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can use either. I use the Log colour space as I prefer to apply a LUT and grade in post (I find it easier to match cameras starting from Log).
@UgoDraws

You should use Canon Cinema gamut for the input color space when color grading in davinci Resolve or u use luts that is ment for clog 3 to start your grading

I read somewhere that to use CLog 3 properly to capture 14 stops worth of dynamic range, it has to be used at IS0 800. Can you confirm this ? Thanks.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Yes, the maximum range of 1600% starts at iso 800 and decreases rapidly as you lower the iso.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Just a thought, I'm not sure what mode you have the camera set to but some will only allow you to register the profile when in photo (P) mode (after registering you can switch to whichever mode you need).

Is there some way to do the same with my Sony a6100, it doesn't record in any color profile
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
The a6100 does not include or support loading picture profiles, however I have some suggestions for settings to provide a relatively flat image that can be used with the Cinetstyle LUT in the description. For most situtions try the following: 1. Select Aperture Priority mode (A) and set it to the lowest value available for your lens. 2. You can leave ISO set to Auto, although you may find adjusting it manually will help in low light situations. 3. Adjust you White Balance depending on the light source. 4. Choose Portrait Mode. 5. Set Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpness to -3. 6. Set DRO/Auto HDR to Level 5. The above setting will get you very close when using the Cinestyle LUT (Canon). After applying the LUT in your editing software you can make minor adjustments to exposure, saturation, black levels, etc. Hope this helps out!

they said canon m50 doesn't with clog but how is it possible to install clog? i need help
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the M50 doesn't come with c-log 3 from the factory, you need to install the profile from James Miller using the Canaon EOS utility. I have download links for the c-log 3 profile and EOS utility downloads in the description and I go through the installation step-by-step starting at 6:57 Hope this help out!

Great video. I was looking for info on which log file (rec or log) to load. your video showed me which one to go with. I loaded the rec in as well and it just looked like basic standard picture profile. What is the rec supposed to do and what is color space? noobie question.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. James Miller’s Rec picture profile gives you the appearance of the Rec 709 color space on the fly whereas the Log profile is meant to be used with a conversion LUT. I use the Leeming LUT for C-LOG3 with the Log profile (which gets the footage almost ready for delivery) and then make final adjustments. I will have a video going through this process out soon. You could use the Rec profile and then make final adjustments, but using the Log profile gives you greater flexibility in post IMO. The simplest way to think of a color space is as a “collection of colors” represented by a mathematical model. Rec 709 is a popular color space for video production. I hope this helps out and thanks again for the question and for watching!

@@askdrtk Thank you very much for the info and I look forward to the video. Is the Leeming Lut something that was in the De-Lut pack that I downloaded from James miller? if so I think I may have purchased the wrong pack because I cant find it in there. I got the DELUTS-LOOK LIBRARY-CANON-LIGHTROOM pack. It had the ClOG 3 picture profile in it... I dunno ..I thought I was doing ok with cinestyle but the clog3 world seems a little more confusing. Thanks for your help.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 3 жыл бұрын
The Leeming LUTs are created by Paul Leeming and are designed to produce accurate colors as opposed to a specific "film processing" look as many of the LUTs in the DELUTS pack do. I find it easier to start with accurate colors (Rec 709) and then adjust to my preference as opposed to colors that have already been "customized." Another reason I use Paul Leeming's LUTs is he makes them for most cameras and since I shoot with several camera brands, it makes color matching easier. The Leeming LUTs also include detailed setup instructions for your camera so that your footage is properly exposed for the LUT which helps grading go smoothly. I import my footage (into Premiere), apply the Leeming LUT as the input LUT, make adjustments I like, and export the cube file to use again and again. I also apply my customized cube file in OBS Studio for live shooting in C-Log3 that is already graded (nice for streaming). Hope this helps out!

Hello, sir, I created my own log picture profile for Canon Cameras (Test Version) with rec709 LUT so you won't have to waste your time doing color-correction. And I'm wondering if you're interested to try it. It would really help me improve it if you can share your opinion. I can send both the Log and the rec709 LUT For free.

Thank you for sharing your profile/LUT process. I generally use the Leeming LUTS as the base for my custom LUTs as I work across several camera brands (makes color matching easier), but using a specific picture profile and LUT as you are doing is a great way to simplify your workflow and to produce consistent results. I would recommend finding someone whose expertise is color science as they would be better able to provide feedback, however if you are interested in my opinion as a general user, contact me through my website contact page: askdrtk.com/contact and we can discuss further. Thanks for sharing and for watching!

Glad my tutorial helped out. The C-Log 3 profile and LUT were created by James Miller and are not currently available for free - I am certain he spent considerable time developing them. You may be able to contact James Miller through his website to see if there is anything he can do for you. The CineStyle profile and LUT are free and provide significantly better performance vs the standard Canon color profile. I would encourage you to try them out.

I bought Canon RP, because it is the lightest full frame camera, but honestly there is no reason to buy Canon or Nikon mirrorless nowdays. Because of their greed. Sony has logs in any camera, Sony has TONNES of mirrorles lenses from any company in the world. Canon has one 24 mm prime and it is total crap (enormous barrel distortion rivals even budget zoom lenses). No 28 mm. And for sony mount there are like 10 primes 24-28 mm and almost all of them cheaper. Want 24-70/2.8 for 800$? Sony. And so on.

I agree, the Sony ecosystem has a lot to offer. I have two Sony’s that I am very happy with. Only thing to consider when it comes to Sony log is that it is available on all current alpha series cameras except the A6000 and A6100. Sony has a big market share, so everyone is making glass…competition = good value for us!
