just the right amount of preloading of complexity to make the task simpler later on ! I should know, I have learned and forgotten this task pretty much every other year of my life : ) .color and reset as a color. Brilliant. This is exactly as it should be taught, a real gem. This takes something that was at an experienced user's complexity and makes it appropriate for new users. This makes playing with color prompt a good way for new programmers to learn about sourcing and export.

@@theurbanpenguin certainly, one can really see how you have consolidated this knowledge. It also strikes me that color prompt and prompt content is actually a very quick and efficient way to test if your environment variables made it into whatever subshell or context one wanted, as well as leading to a decent discussion on dynamic vs lexical variables.

Yesterday I googled for quite a while to get my prompt colored and failed on where/how to set the color and what the display variables are. With your tutorial it is now all understandable and easy to implement. Thank you very much!
