After watching a previous video, had been going with the recommended short thumb. Now after watching this video, am going with a "medium" thumb. As a motivated beginner who watches a lot of teaching videos, now realizing that there are conflicting ways of doing many things.

I did this Long Thumb back in 1965 when I was 21 and it Change My Golf !!! Also the Ball Go's Much Straighter using the back of the LEFT Hand as a GUIDE !!!

Years ago, around 2005, I was taught that a short thumb was necessary, and so I always tried my best to make that grip work even though I hated it. I always felt it hindered my ability to feel strong holding on to the club throughout my swing. It also made me think I needed my trailing arm (right) be in control of everything. About 4-years ago I decided to study Dustin Johnson's swing. After a number of changes in an attempt to emulate something close to DJ's swing, I still felt weak holding onto the club. Last summer (2020), I took a hard look at my grip and that of DJ's. Suddenly, Eureka! I found it. In a close-up photo of DJ's grip at the top of his swing, there it was; a long left hand thumb. Since make that change I not only feel stronger, I was also able to alter other aspects of my grip and swing to bring me closer to my goals. I can honestly say, I feel stronger, confident and in control by making that one change in my grip. At last, golf is exciting again.

How is your accuracy doing with the new grip? By the way I noticed the same about DJ, and went hmmmm...
@arphx23 жыл бұрын
@@josephwirtz8352 Honestly, my accuracy has never been the issue with my swing, unless I was trying to swing as hard as I could with the driver. Distance on the other hand has been my problem. I'm now much older. I play TaylorMade M2s full set. They're great clubs, inherently designed for distance, as: "improvement level club". I have thin wrists with limited arm strength. In other words, I'm not a big guy that can pound the ball. So I have to play accurate golf. What I've found by going to a long thumb, I now have a firmer grip. In the past, I was holding the club as if I was holding onto a bird (which I was taught to do). As a result of the long thumb, my distance has improved because there's less vibration from when the club's moment of inertia (imperfect contact) happens. One other benefit, I have a lot more spin from my wedges as I power through the shot. Sorry for the long answer. Hope your game is always fun and love filled. Al

I was told the same as yourself about short thumb a few years ago and driving accuracy improved but irons have been poor, tried long grip this afternoon and instantly got baby draw back with irons and seemed effortless. Hopefully striking continues to improve, was always a slight drawer of irons .

This is amazing. i used this grip and got effortless power. I dint even have to swing the club. I just lifted my arms and let them flop . it was all in the grip!

Just got back from the range after trying this, holy shit, it really worked for me. It was uncomfortable at first, but the wrist bend at the top felt so good after a while. 100% making the switch.

Nice. It's crazy how much everyone can contradict each other in short thumb vs long thumb. But I guess neither is bad. It all depends on what works for you. Everyone has different hand size, arm length, height, weight, mobility, and preferences. Single plane and 2 plane. People holding in their palms and people holding in their fingers. But at the end of the day, everyone hitting good shots deliver a square face at the direction they are aiming.

Conversely this could be of great help when you are between two clubs. What do you think ? 1cm down the grip + short thumb. How much this shall alter distance ? Thanks

Long thumb and and thumb pad ususally go together and that gives you all the control and power you need ask Rambo and Bryson.

Short thumb is better
@roadfert8 ай бұрын
I must be an anatomical anomaly (say that 3 times fast) but the “long thumb” actually keeps me from over hinging my wrists. This is interesting because I’ve always had a long swing with a short thumb, perhaps I need to make a switch. 😎
@joebrings58173 күн бұрын
That because ur cupped at the top. Ur wrist has to cup at the top to compensate for the hinge. Short thumb decreases hinge and then ur wrist cups to allow it to hinge fully. Long thumb allows the wrist to set more and ur wrist won’t need to cup at the top .

Many excellent golf instructors say exactly the opposite , short thumb = distance. This is why this sport is so difficult, one instructor tells you one thing and an other one the opposite.I play a decent golf only because I listen to .....myself

Michael. Your contradict anothet utube instructor. His rule says do a short thumb for more yards. ??????

I just watched another video before this one where a pro said the short thumb was way better, less tension in the forearm, now this guy says the opposite....this is why golf instruction sucks.

Such terrible advice. You might be able to hit it further with a long thumb when you occasionally time everything up but good luck controlling the hinge at the top and controlling the face through the shot

I changed my grip over winter to have a more strong grip … so left thumb was extended out and then right hand went over left thumb and could feel it in my right palm. Pretty much followed Padraig Harringtons grip video to a T. Now I have bad arthritis in that thumb…on a 2 week break from golf in hopes that it doesn’t continue to be a lingering issue…very painful when I golf and the day after golf. Going to try moving to short thumb now to see if that helps (based on the majority of research / videos I’ve seen-they’ve said to use short thumb to avoid injuries - this is the only one I’ve found that says the opposite). But I’m always willing to be persuaded if I’m wrong here - I want to do whatever I can to eliminate this pain so I can continue to golf
@Runt80218 ай бұрын
Rather it was my long thumb that was giving me pain at every swing. I recently changed to short thumb to see if any improvement. For me, the new grip has been consistent in directions and distance. Maybe to each his own?
@fradaja8 ай бұрын
@@Unsubscribe19 Arthritis is age related , not an injury , I injured my left thumb socket , from playing golf with a short thumb putting pressure on the socket at the top , this was 10 years ago , I’m now 52 , I have no pain in my left thumb socket, and no pressure on that socket at the top , I have also gained distance through more lag , I’d be interested to see these instructions advocating how a short thumb will prevent injury , as it makes no sense , the thumb and socket is under pressure with a short thumb due to the club head acting as a lever on the thumb pad , I’ll stick with padraig , he’s about my age , and still hitting it mikes as a senior .
