Add more samples on Serato with a padDrum and Ableton Live

How to have more than 4x8 samples/jingles on Serato, using an extra paddrum and a MAO software like Live Ableton.
As a dj, I’m shooting many samples during my sets, and Serato bank was not big enough. I bought an extra MIDI controller (a paddrum / launchpad MK3 mini), and connected it to my controller (DDJ-SZ), with a music software (Ableton Live). I couldn’t find tutorial on internet to explain how to do it. I struggled for a day before achieving what i wanted. Here is a quick video (sorry for the poor quality), explaining what to do.

Have you had any luck syncing loops in ableton with Serato ? I’m trying through link but I can’t get ableton to follow tempo/tc in serato.

Pretty sure you can map the midi in each bank of serato samples in serato dj to the launchpad negating the need for ableton entirely??

Yes can can. Allowing you to use 4x8=32 samples at max. The solution I'm using allows you more.

Classic/native mode allow u to move around all the clips on live/scene view in Ableton. Why use the user mode? if Ableton still open when u Live play.. @@sebastienpipet4438

I would say yes. Any MIDI controller should work. Even a midi-piano-keyboard. Just have to see how to parameter the controller (especially the launch mode)

I use the both without any problem. My mac is used only for music, and the storage of my music is on an extarnal drive. I'm keeping it as empty as I can to avoid troubles ;-)

Why do you need Ableton for this? Shouldn't you be able to MIDI map your 4 sample banks in Serato right to the Ableton controller?

when I try to link the Serato with Ableton. Ableton does not recognize the sound card of the controller but if I exit Serato software then it sees it. Can somebody help me how I supposed to link my ddj sz2 controller with Ableton via Serato link on the same pc? Thanks

Hello. First of all, I’m not an expert on that field, but let’s try to have a look. Secondly, unfortunately what I’m showing here, I couldn’t make it working with the DDJ-SZ2, as the “effects are post-fader”. When I’m connecting ableton to the controller, my signal is sended straight to the master. You can’t apply filter, check volumes etc. I personally ended up with a jack-rca cable, and send the audio output of my computer to the line in of my table... (if anyone has better solution, I take it !) Back to your question, what’s happen if you connect your SZ2 to your computer/mac (?), open the audio preferences to use&connect the sound-card of the controller, and THEN open live ?

hi mate, I think you can just make drum rack in ableton and just drag all samples you like to it and then its done, I dont think you need to map anything on launchpad. You can drag to drumrack hundreds of samples (around 5x64 samples if I remember) and it will be in just one cell in ableton, then you can make new clip and doo the same. Launchpad will be mapped already, no need to map it in ableton

Hello Grzegorz. You're right, it's also an option I did not thought about. But there is I think a drawback, you can't personalise the launch mode : 12:18 Also What I liked is to visualise on ableton the same way it's displaying on my launchpad. The drumracks allows row of 4 items only. (if I remember correctly ?)

@@sebastienpipet4438 I wonder if you can change layout to see 64 layout. I can have it like this on my Push2 and your controller is pretty smart so probably have that too. On Push you can click on pad and when holding it press shift to change colour of only that pad/sample. Maybe you could do the same on launchpad

Good question. Nowadays, I have the DDJ SZ2, and I can’t reproduce the same thing. I ended up linking the headphone port to the 4th Channel through a cable. And in that case, i just have a switch button to jump between line and usb.

Thanks ! Its a very sketchy video but the idea is here. I changed my contrôler, i got the DDJ SZ2, and its not working anymore, as they now have post-fader FX :-(
