I can definitely recommend hunting down a Saturn s-video cable. I've done this mod and definitely use s-video because it has the correct color palette while being almost as sharp as RGB

This is my console and I couldn’t be happier with the work done. It was cool getting to see the mod done in this video. Now, I will wait to see if you can fix my model 1 Sega CD. Fingers crossed. Thanks!

I've just picked one up and intend to do this mod some time soon. I did a basic composite mod to my PC Engine a couple years back but being able to get an accurate palette using S-Video will be a welcome improvement, even if RGB with accurate palette is still out of reach. I already did a full cap replacement on my entire PC Engine, CD-ROM, and IFU, as well as a region switch mod and that little "jailbar" mod a while back, so this should be relatively easy. The only shame is that positioning the region switch means the nice little positioning board my newer release of this mod has won't be usable, but it shouldn't be too hard to swap out the Genesis 2 style DIN for a Saturn one using the older method used in this video. I think the only change I'll make here is using a "ribbon" style cable for a slightly cleaner install.

I finished the mod a few months back but forgot to add an update on that. First of all, Saturn dins are hard to come by and so I ended up using a thin soldering tip to "melt" around the inner housing a bit until a standard Saturn cable fit perfectly inside. It looks decent enough at least, though I'm sure it's noticable under a high light and zoomed in. Secondly, I used a Dremel to cut out a rectangle in the lower mounting board, so that my existing region mod switch didn't interfere with placement. Other than that, the mod worked perfectly! I can even revert to composite using the IFU connection if I wish. Now, to get stereo CD audio, I use the audio jacks on my IFU anyway but that doesn't cause any issues with this mod. Using some ribbon cables cleaned up the bottom runs very nicely as well, and I'm glad I did that. Other than that, this video helped with a lot of the finer details, and I thank you for it!

@7:55 friendly reminder to not be an idiot like me and solder the DIN board upside-down.

I'm assuming because of the size of the PC Engine the power supply is contained in the AC Adapter. Which would make importing the console to the USA easy since you'd only need to replace the AC Adapter. I know it's not THAT important because power standards between USA and Japan aren't too far off, unlike Europe, but personally, if I bought a PC Engine and imported it, I'd want cables meant for USA standards? I hope I'm making sense.

I just installed mine with a cap kit as well, it works and it looks great but it will not work with my cd Ron interface unit. I think it’s a grounding issue.

Where are they getting Saturn 10 pin Din Connectors? I'd love to get ahold of these to replace the ports on two of my saturns. Because I'm on the verge of putting an SNES AV port on the damn thing.

You can still get them on aliexpress and a few other sites. But it’s not as easy as other connectors

I don’t know what happened to my earlier reply but it is the Kycon 10P miniDIN on Mouser or DigiKey though I got mine unbranded from Ali- (this is probably what got my previous comment ghosted). They are also used in DirecTV boxes with 10PINCOMPOS and 10PINCOMPON cables. Original Saturn cables have extra keying but you can modify these like RGBSource does so that they will fit anything. They fit HDRV, RGC, RetroAccess, etc and virtually any 3rd party cable without modification.

It's not a "Saturn" DIN connector per-se, doesn't have the same keying. So if you have some older Saturn cables, or Insurrection Industries RGB cables, you would need to cut some of the plastic in the connector to replicate the keying on the original Saturn connector. But most 3rd party cables made these days work with it just fine, no modification needed.

Why is there always so much excess flux on NEC motherboards? You'd have thought that NEC would have been a far more professional outfit.

Yeah they are always messy, although the residue does not interfere with the operation of the console
