This episode is money, love incorporating isometrics since listening to Mind Pump. After the 4th surgery on my knee, my rehab was not working. Then, after hearing these guys talk so long ago about it, I did extra work with isometrics and it changed my life. I appreciate the team and Mind Pump for always opening my eyes to new ways that help me reach my goals.

I'd like to add to the SPEAKER/AMP analogy - there's a MISSING component!: the SOURCE!🎶💿(ie. The Record/Turntable or Your Movement Patterns) The QUALITY of the Source might be more important than your Amp🎛 or Speakers🔊. A poor quality source signal could be amplified and sound bad through any speakers. Keep Pumping 🏋🏋♂🏋♀

As physical therapists we use isometrics a lot because of the populations we treat but I think part of the reason isometrics went out of fashion at least as far as the trunk musculature is concerned is that you already do it with most lifts anyway, or at least your supposed to. You're supposed to be isometrically contracting your trunk musculature during a lot of lifts anyway. And with isolation exercises you're ideally squeezing isometrically at a certain point in the lift anyway. So most people probably just stopped doing EXTRA isometric work as a matter of still getting results without spending extra time in the gym.

I think over the years the only isometric i often do is for chest and it is not the bottom position when benching but the final squeeze position on a pec machine or cable flys, at the last set i always hold until i cant hold anymore , trying to keep my hands as straight as possible ( you know without bending elbows at the final squeeze position of the movement) and squeeze with my inner chest for 20-30 seconds until i start to shake and fail to hold anymore. Now when i think about it, ppl often ask in my gym what i so for my inner chest line to be that pronounced even on higher than 12 body fat %. I think the many different fly movements and the brutal holds at last set have done this :) Now ill try to do this for all muscles intentionally 😂 it just feels so good for chest so i have done it without even thinking, that has always been my finisher.

Symmetry sounds exactly like what I need. I’ve got a persistent ache in my left shoulder blade and in my right hip/glute due to a shorter right leg.
@greasemonkeyfitness2 жыл бұрын
Curious..Did you happen to have that diagnosed by a chiropractor?
@ambermulder18662 жыл бұрын
@@greasemonkeyfitness I learned from a chiropractor that my right leg is shorter. That was a number of years ago. Within the past year, I’ve noticed more ache on that side and can see the discrepancy in length when I lift in front of a mirror. I guess I chalk it up to the length discrepancy.
@greasemonkeyfitness2 жыл бұрын
@@ambermulder1866 Same thing happened to me - chiro took xrays, full evaluation, said my right leg was shorter. Visits helped for a while, new chiro sold me orthotics etc.. YEARS later, after starting my health journey, I found a CHEK level 4 practitioner (shout out to @joshlebow ) that also studied at the Postural Restoration Institute - which basically points out that internally (our organ layout) we are asymmetrical - some worse than others, also exacerbated by movement patterns and habits - and there are diaphragm breathing exercises to help counter this. Has helped me so much! My (new) chiro now agreed that I don't have a discrepancy. I also go barefoot as much as possible and wear Xero shoes every where else. Hope this helps!

Could yoga be considered isolation form of exercise? I've done the DDPY yoga program before and he's always talking moving with dynamic resistance. Definitely need symmetry at some point. Between my feet being jacked up, me not switching hands with alt grip deadlifts, and sitting on the edge of a bed with an uneven topper to play video games and do homework I've developed so many imbalances lol. Aside from obvious usage and strength differences, I noticed one hip looked bigger laterally than the other. Then one last is bigger when flexing but it may just be a shoulder mobility issue, and later I noticed the erectors on the left side of my back protrude outwards more than my right. I got plenty of work and improvements to keep me busy!
