Silicosis is a severe lung disease caused by inhaling tiny particles of crystalline silica dust. In India, silicosis is a significant occupational health problem, primarily affecting workers in industries like mining, construction and sandblasting. These industries often involve processes that generate silica dust, which can be inhaled deeply into the lungs. When inhaled, silica dust can cause inflammation and difficulty breathing , coughing and chest pain. In severe cases, silicosis can lead to respiratory failure and even death. Precis - Silicosis problem in India:- Silicosis is a lung disease caused by recurring inhalation of tiny silica particles. These silica particles lodged in the bronchus cause severe pain in the lungs, and sometimes it also causes respiratory failure. Silica is basically found in sand and rocks, so the workers involved in mining and construction are easily infected by silicosis. In India this problem is in an exaggerated state, because in India industries use cheap silica quite often, which creates a suitable environment for silicosis. As there are no proper guidelines or safety measures to reduce the exposure of silica dust, the workers faced bad working conditions and delays in medical or legal resources by which silicosis becomes life threatening for them. Data also suggests that in 1999 about 8 million workers suffered from silicosis. To curb this situation, proper guidelines and actions are needed to address and to reduce silicosis. However, more awareness is needed among the workers and expansion of healthcare leads to free health checkups for the workers is needed. Minerals play a pivotal role in the growth of the Indian economy. To maintain the level, mineral extraction increased. One of the minerals is silica which is important for sand and stone used for construction. During extraction silica dust consumed by the workers causes a new deadly disease called silicosis. It is age-agnostic and determined by exposure. It threatens millions of workers many of them are young. A report of the Indian Council of Medical Research in 1999 represents the dead worker's data which is increased due to the opening of new mines and expanding old. On November 29, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) asked the Central Pollution Control Board to create healthcare facilities near the mines to avoid calamities.
