Thanks, Daniel. Your videos convinced me to buy a Juwel. I went for the Lido 120 because it fitted better my needs and space. I am very happy with it so far. But I did change the filter as it takes too much space in a “small” 120 L. I put an Enheim bio flow external canister instead. I don’t regret this change.

Dear Daniel: For me, hang-on-the-back filters do the job and hiding the intakes is doable. I have yet to set up the canister filter I bought on sale, over a decade ago. It’s probably dry-rotted, by now (though unopened, in the box) and because that, particular model was discontinued, I couldn’t get replacement parts. I’m keen to maximize tank space and make them look as natural as possible. But, as you get such, terrific filtration with the internal filter, keep up the great work. Since it’s black, it isn’t too obtrusive. Your scape looks fantastic! Thank your, continued assistance, in the FishFam Community. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
@DanielKeepingFish

Well it's a big tank so doesn't feel like giving too much over to the filter. I'm a big fan of hang on backs but there not really big over here for some reason. We don't have anywhere near the range of options in terms of brands and models that you do in the US. Not to sure why that is.

I was going to replace my, two, old, Emperor 400, HOB filters on my, 120-gallon tank with two Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel Power Filters (Size: 50 - 75 Gallon Aquarium, 350 GPH), but I see that Amazon jacked-up the price! I may put that off until I can sort $80.00 worth of gift cards.

Thanks for letting us know. Most filters that just use the standard pipes will be fine I think. Only model I've run into problems with so far has been the Fluval FX series with their ridged-flex design.

@@DanielKeepingFish I have just bought a Juwel 350 (second hand) after being out of the tropical game for a while. Purchased the fluval 407 for the tank (removed internal filter, watched your vid on the wifes "technical tools" that you used to remove yours LOL). Anyway, the corrigated hose is too big and lid wont shut. Oh well off to buy more gubbins before I can fire the baby up :) Any online stores you reccomend? Keep up the good work on the vids, great stuff!
@DanielKeepingFish

@jonkemp3927 thank you. The Fluval pipes are a bit larger in diameter right enough. I am running an FX2 just now and I cut slots in the lid to make them fit. I uploaded a video about it three weeks ago. You could look at that if it would save you buying a new filter. Otherwise I quite like the Oase Biomaster Thremos (although I never added the heaters inside) and the Eheim Classics have always been pretty solid. Welcome back to the hobby.

I use a Oase Biomaster 600 on my Vision 260 with no problems. (the original filter eventually came loose so I removed it) I keep the Oase 600 filter outside the cabinet so I can access the brilliant pre- filter easily ( not having to move the entire filter in and out of the cabinet) because it's a tall filter and I do water changes every 4 days.

I have added an Oase to my 240 and use this for mechanical filtration and the jewel filter that came with the tank is full of bio media. Seems to work quite well. I believe where you placed the inlet inside the jewel filter is where water travels up from the bottom of the filter to start the filtration process in that filter. Don’t know if that would have an impact on the effectiveness of that filter? I have a lid where the oase inlet and outlet go through a hole in the top.👍

Thank you. I didn't actually run the canister filter the way I showed it in the video. It was just for demonstration purposes and I removed the internal filter not long after. Purely because Fluval sent me one of their FX filters which are so good I figured I might as well go for it. Hope it works well for you and you enjoy your new tank.

I don't have a 180 to test that on. Might be worth looking into whether the cut outs are the same. I'd imagine they will be but best to check. Also some Fluval filter like the FX range come with their ridged more flexible tubing that are wider than most filter standard tubing. I did another video about that when they sent me their FX2 to test.

Very nice tank. Do you finally succeed crystal clear water? I have 5 week juwel lido 120l with the juwel internal filter and the water is dusty and floating things on water . I am looking to external filter to have crystal clear water.
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dimitrios. I am just using the in built filter, I only made this video because someone asked about it. I don't really struggle with water clarity. I have bio-media in the bottom half of the filter. In the top half I have (from top to bottom) course foam, medium foam, fine foam then the floss pad that came with it. Works pretty great for me. I get a bit of clouding after feeding dry foods but it clears up pretty quick.

Hi pal another great video! , I have just got the 450 and wanted to set up a marine tank, would i be best off with an external filter? Thanks
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish Жыл бұрын
Got to me honest mate I know very little about marine. From a fresh water point of view I think it comes down to personal choice. I thought the internal filter was fine and I like the idea of keeping as much water as possible in the tank, less risk of any leaks. If you're happy using canisters though that's fine too. Only thing I'll say is check the size of the pipes. The ones of this Biomaster are fine but the ones that come with the FX filters are wider that the cut outs in the back of the tank so the lid doesn't close neatly. Fine is you are going open top or have another plan of course.
@BlazedReefer

@@DanielKeepingFish thanks for your reply, i already seen your video that shows the pipes on the external, im now watching marine setups and if they all use slumps.. i have alot 9f research to do before i go marine as ive only ever kept chiclids but found that easy tbh so fancy the new challenge.... I have the same tank. How on earth do you keep it so algae free?! Iv struggled for three years and tried just about everything. My newest and probably last idea is changing the internal filter for a bigger canister filter but it’s a big cost if it doesn’t work. Thanks for the video. Do you use RO water?
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 10 ай бұрын
I don't use RO no but the water here in Scotland is pretty good. It's more about balancing the nutrients, photo period and maintenance regime really. Nutrients + light = organic (algae in this case) growth. You can try cutting down on either or both and ramping up the water changes. Live plants also use up the nutrients and compete with the algae for them. 👍

Hi Daniel. My Axolotl tank has been invaded by some form of white Detritus worms (introduced perhaps via live aquatic food). Ive tubbed the Axolotls and stripped the tank, sterilising it by adding aquarium salt to kill the worms. When I reassemble the tank can I return all 3 Axolotls in the tank if I use Nitrico goop? Ive been told Nitrico Goop is instant live bacteria and cycles the tank in 24 hours? Please advise
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish Жыл бұрын
So I can't speak confidently on it having never tried it myself. I know some people have found it great, others have considered it snake oil. Far as I understand it, it's just the same stuff you'll find in your existing filtere although more concentrated and purer. Can't hurt to try it but you have other tanks right? If it were me I'd be squeezing out the filter media from those tanks into the media on the Axolotl tank and maybe adding some of the media too in order to seed it. Also keeping an eye on the water parameters and doing more frequent water changed if needed for a while. I'm going to add mate I'm not sure I'd have gone to those lengths if they were just Detritus worms. They're actually very helpful in breaking down waste and excess food in the tank. If anything I'd have just cut back on feeding for a few days. I'm not saying that to make you feel bad or anything, just a suggestion on what to try if it happens again.
@thehelpfulhobbyist5355

@@DanielKeepingFish thank you brother, for your reply. The worms were multiplying rapidly despite regular water changes. The worms became free swimming and began infesting the feathering gills which led to madness and constant darting around! Furthermore the worms attached themselves on the skin of the axolotls causing much agitation and stress. Had no choice but to tub the axolotls and sterilise the tank with aquarium salt.
