For the ammo, having it be bullets is the tricky part. if they were energy weapons you could pick up batteries (ammo) and that battery can shoot 5 small energy balls or one large energy ball. That way the global system applies but its not only picking up bullets that magically change types, it's picking up charges

Be careful with the shared ammo system, as it causes sometimes overlooked concerns. With a shared pool, you cannot just switch to a different gun when one gun runs out of ammo. Shared pools can also exacerbate or create weapon balance issues, as using any weapon reduces how often you can use every other weapon.

batman's grapnel gun is a mechanic where the player can basically teleport to a (usually higher) location far away. There is a sweet animation where batman shoots a rope out, and then retracts the rope and flies towards the spot, but the basic mechanic is "teleport to a spot that I'm pointing at". This kind of mechanic makes sense in a batman game where you are incentivized to get up high and swoop down on bad guys. This freaky shooter game has already incentivized climbing and built many mechanics around that climbing. This newest enemy requires you to trigger the creature to attack with its face so you can climb its neck and kill it. If you could grapple hook to the creature's neck it would make it too easy. At the current balance of the game, a grappling hook would be too powerful. The only reason to include a grapple hook is if you want to reward the player for accomplishing a difficult achievement (like kill a difficult boss or complete a large crafting path to get a special item) by giving them a new ability (grappling hook) that makes them feel a lot stronger. Perhaps killing these tall boys without a grappling hook gives you special parts (like you break down the batteries that you remove and it drops special components), then you craft those components (or use them as a special gas) into a grappling hook and now you can kill those enemies a lot easier. So if there is a new area later on, like a floating rock field area or a castle in the sky or maybe an island in a deep sea (the player can't swim), then the grappling hook could be used to get to that new area. Maybe there are more interesting resources/craftables in that area, or maybe there is a cool challenge boss to kill. But simply adding a grappling hook to the start of the game would make it too easy. (Terraria does a really good job of giving you more powerful tools as you defeat bosses, and then gives you more powerful bosses/enemies to fight that are tuned to the power level you have just reached)
@nilla21993 жыл бұрын
Btw a good use for it is to be used on flying enemies that need to be taken down in a certain way or floating platforms out of player reach
@crycrcfyhf88623 жыл бұрын
@@MattWyndham just make it act like an actual grappling hook. So you have to take into account speed, momentum,hight ,angle of release etc Then it could be something amazing. Just imaging jumping off a robot you just destroyed, aiming and grappling towards another mechs leg flying under its leg launching you 30ft in to the air then landing on its head and pulling out the battery.
@MattWyndham3 жыл бұрын
@@crycrcfyhf8862 That's incredibly frustrating as a player because a true grappling hook means you no longer have any control over where you are moving. But if you allow the player to control movement in the air then it's basically a restricted flight mechanic and that's fine. Risk of Rain 2 has a grappling hook mechanic for the Loader character, but that is a cheat because you can control the character while she is grappling, so it's more like limited flight in game mechanic terms

An Energy System would be smart for many reasons beyond ammo and could unite all the game systems: - Triped batteries are a HUGE energy resource, making battle worth it - You could set up solar panels/energy gathering machines that you then have to defend - Breaking into bases could be to steal your competitor's energy resources - A "power a ship to get off planet" mechanic to finish levels - Certain energy resources are huge and you have to roll them across the map to your machinery to process - Energy could be used to craft more weapons/power-ups

You should add some lore elements eventually, that would be awesome. Also, how far into development are you? I would love to play this when it's done. Edit: I think that the really big enemies should fall slower (if you can do that without messing with gravity), or have puffs of terrain when they hit the ground to really sell the scale. It would also be cool if there were dead astronauts, like you aren't the first one there. It would also be cool if the robots had a ammo container that you could loot the same way you pull out batteries, and then the box dissapears and gives you ammo. Sorry this is so long lol

When it comes to Ammo : What if you stick to the Sci-Fi theme and just have it be some sort of Exotic Matter or Programmable matter (and just call it Matter, with some other word in front of it). That way you could have it be any ammo without having it detract thematically while still keeping the intended mechanic. This also makes me excited to think that it could expand even beyond that; have this Matter also be used as currency or some other resource to be used elsewhere eg. to be used to aquire research points (if you plan on implementing a skill system) or build structures or craft items/equipment, that way the player is forced to make a choice between having more ammo or having something else.

For the ammo, having the resource pool and weapon types have a unified design for the GUI will help. If you have a maximum ammo the player can carry, then having a clearly visible colored bar or wedge related to the selected weapon is a good way to tell the player "you are taking this much of a slice from your resources when using the selected weapon.

In terms of ammo system, flipping it around may be more intuitive. Right now, 5 is sometimes less than 5. Instead, you could make it so that 1 is occasionally 5. The climbing mechanic looks proper good and seems really slick and controllable. Only just came across your game looking for procedural animation videos. All I can say is instant sub and I can't wait to watch more. Great stuff man! About shared ammo, one issue that dissuaded me from having that system in my game was that it discourages using different weapons. Players will likely stick to their favourite weapon for most of the time. Saying that though having weapons filling very specific roles will definitely help. Explosive for groups, short, mid and long range options. Different projectile speeds balanced against damage and rate of fire in addition to unique damage/projectile mechanics like a saw blade boomerang, homing ability or something. The rest is scope creep I think because the game looks incredible as is. You could add elemental damage and resistances, though for a robot enemy type you could go for surface type resistances against different weapons (energy damage better on shields, explosive for metal or piercing damage against weak spots like glass eyes or in between joints). I'll throw some more stuff in case anything resonates. Perhaps have magnets, EMPs, hacking/turncoat weaponry, disabling/destroying/freezing enemy limbs/weapons, enemy buffs, that one annoying enemy type, support class enemy types, player abilities/power-ups, some other Doom Eternal mechanic here, enemy emotions like normal angry, scared or player buffs.

So damn good. you've gotta be one of my favorite game dev youtubers. I think having a grappling hook in the game could work really well in terms of the issue you were having with the movement becoming boring at times. If you were going to add it I would reccomend implementing one similar to that of the pathfinder character in apex legends (or titanfall 2 but they are basically the same). If you have ever seen someone use this style of grappling hook, although it takes some skill, with a little practice the player is able to speed around environments and fling themselves through the map. This can make traversing even the most dull places very enjoyable aswell as giving the player a real sense of speed and control over how they move. It could also make for a very interesting mechanic when fighting some of the enemies. It would be awesome to see an enemy that had ungrappleable armor that you had to shoot off in order to be able to grapple ontop or somewhere else on the robot and remove its batteries. Or maybe one robot cannot be grappled onto at all and you have to wait for it to summon drones in order to use the drones to grapple ontop of it. Anyway that's just a suggestion I love what your doing with the game and can't wait to buy it once it's finished!

When transforming into the spider-thing, you should let advanced enemies to track you by following the substance you left behind when crawling. welcome back man! for ammo, i always liked the Mass Effect strategy: ammo is "infinite", due to the fact that weapons shoot microscopic shards of metal that effectively take years to deplete (stored in weapon), and the "ammo" is actually heat sinks that are needed to avoid weapon exploding due to too much heat energy from the electromagnetic propulsion it uses to shoot. Or ammo = energy and bullet = hardlight created matter, so you can explain gathering energy but shooting physical bullets.

A single collective ammo type is a great idea, but might need some help to seem logical or intuitive. First, rename the ammo something like "Nano-Bits" or "Destructo-bits" to imply that these things are more than just bullets and can be universal. Second, it's probably pretty important to have a script that divides the total by a given amount depending on what weapon is equipped. For example, you might have 50 Nano-Bits, but when you switch to a rocket launcher, that number now appears as 10. Third, a game mechanic such as this should have more than one use. Maybe it's ammo, but Nano-bits also serve as upgrade points or repair tokens. That way, there's still a reason to display the total rather than just its current worth in ammo. Great idea and wonderful project, thanks for sharing!

I feel like in similar vain to valhiem you could have randomly spawning dungeons around the map that houses ammo and other types of stuff that would feature cyborgs that have a more grounded type of movement and maybe also have a building system too! Great work though cant wait to see it finshed!

Add spawnable vehicles next (like a spaceship, rover, etc.) In order to make them, you have to get blueprints from structures and materials from killed robots or creatures.

Imagine this as a survival game where you live in this world infested of robots

This looks amazing dude! After you remove the first battery i think it would be cool if the robot acted really erratic and convulsing to add some challenge to get that last batt out and destroy this beast for good

ideas: 1) make it so the robots attempt to capture the wildlife, implying they are there for a reason 2) add cool lore, like a symbol on the player's suit that's also on the bots somewhere 3) add boss music when a 'large' enemy that hasn't been encountered yet comes by, like menacing and ominous music when the drone spawner first turns to look at you 4) idea for the conclusion/end of the game, the player encounters an inactive Teleporter and a large number of top level enemies that resemble the mutant player are spawned and chase players down a path on the other side of the Teleporter, these things would lead the player to a seemingly abandoned nearby lab/spaceship, it would be crashed into a mountain front first and there would be a large hanger with a hole seemingly ripped in to the middle, and more of those robots will chase the player until they get inside and then they turn passive, this hangar would be an area that looks like you would find those robots in, there would be computer modules in front of each 'chamber' implying the restraints failed, there would be a door leading to a maze of rooms and paths. in these there would be occasional sounds that resemble the noise the player makes when walking in mutant form, the corridors would all lead to a cockpit and a chair, with blank monitors and controls surrounding the player, then if the player presses a button the ship activates and begins self repairing, as indicated by monitors turning on and showing a progressively more complete ship being repaired, the ship would then be launched into the air and space, where a massive planet like structure, that gets hinted to be the first background plant the player sees by it's shinyness and possibly the direction enemies come form, and the player sees that it's made of metal and churning robots as it slowly pans into view and trains it's cannons on player ship, and it's hangar gets released, this would be the final boss, and it would be the hardest yet as there would be large swarms of flying enemies plus the numerous cannons, once it dies it triggers a cutscene where it crashes into a nearby planet and the camera goes into the thing through an opening where it quickly rushes through all the places on the inside, where it comes across the area the player was forced to shoot to kill it, it then flashes and turns on and dramatic sound plays yeah I put way too much effort into that lol

Like the new biomes idea. Perhaps a canyon biome could offer interesting vertical movement options and maybe even a spider-climbing enemy of some kind.
