Adding Art Gilting to a Bible (Red Geranium - Archival Ink). I decided to make a tutorial video of my first attempt at adding art gilting to a bible. This bible is a Local Church Bible Publishers 390 Executive Edition Wide Margin Bible and is a great bible aside from it not being art gilted. I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt. Hope this helps some of you if you decide to upgrade your bible yourself. Enjoy.

To keep the gold nice and bright, wipe off the color often while applying. Rub on for 30 seconds or so then close the book and wipe the still damp color from the gold edges. In this way you can preserve the shine of that gold. To keep ink off the headband and ribbons, cover in masking tape or scotch tape while coloring.

TO RE-ENvIGORATE THE GUILTING, DO WE HAVE TO SAND THE PAGES, OR CAN WE APPLY ON TOP OF OLD GUILTING IF IT IS THE SAME COLOR?

what should you use to wipe off the damp color?

I've watched other videos showing this procedure but I REALLY didn't understand some points: 1° What is this product and how to apply it correctly? 2° I always see them applying the product and carrying out the procedures without any care and in a very improvised way... 3° Is it a durable procedure and is the golden layer resistant? 4° THE RED becomes GOLD?? As I said, I've seen videos and I don't understand why the result looks so good.... 🤔

None of my bibles have gold gilt edges, but I do stain the all myself with permanent red ink, using much the same methods you use. I have learned that staining the edges in this way really helps to improve the look of all second hand books, but more importantly it offers protection for the top most edges, preventing them from absorbing moisture on the shelf, which means any dust that settles on top is far easier to remove by light brushing, and is also much less likely to stain the edges too. Great work my brother, I would love just half of you collection of quality bibles, as all mine are second hand bought from good will shops, as I have practically zero budget, so learning how to care for, maintain, and repair old books is important for me. You can prevent dust by keeping it in the box

damp cloth will also wash out the gold gilding, do not use a wet cloth if you want to keep your gold on the pages

Can I use this method to erase scratches on the gold gilding of my study bible? Got my fingernail scratched when it slipped from my hand and it now has a rather wide scratch on the side reaching from cover to cover.

I leaned a lot here. My first attempt I went across the pages and not down. It destroyed the gold gilding. Also, I didn’t wipe off the excess ink. Red Geranium looks fairly close to Cambridge. My Cambridge art gilding came very slouchy is I’m wanting to fix it

So i just tried this with a dark green. It looks really good but now there is green on the gold on the ends of the pages. Could you try this same technique to cover the gold with a different color? Im thinking of trying the jet black over the gold to go with the dark green that shows when the bible is open.

Thank you Beau this was very informative and easy to see! Is there a drying time required? I have heard like doing a one color on top of another, have you done this and how long between colors. I have a couple of bibles I can use. I have my 67 New Scofield Reference Bible that was in a fire and I want to to this too! I also want to see how to replace ribbons also. Do you have most of your supplies from Hobby Lobby! Ribbons & ink and the pads. Since I am handicapped maybe it would be best getting the supplies on Amazon? NEVER use anything wet that will destroy the paper let alone the gilding it's not waterproof

I cant find this bible on the lcbp? They have it but not with the margins on the inside edge.

What happens if you do that and spray on some gold metallic paint after? So that the gold on the side is gold all the way again

I can imagine it looking similar to the result if I decided to repaint my car with a house paint and brush... Yes it will have color but it just wont look exactly like it should.
