This video shows the first batch of fish I'm adding into my dream pond. I added in 20 Murray River Rainbow fish, 10 Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon and 10 Southern Pygmy perch. All these fish are cold tolerant which is a must in Gippsland, Victoria.
I purchased the fish form Chris at Middle Creek Farm. You can find her on facebook- / middle-creek-farm-9893... . Tell her Kev from ozponds sent you. Postage is available. Keep in mind these fish need a cool climate and aren't suitable for those of you with tropical ponds.

This is so cool! I love making native setups. It's interesting doing the research of where everybody is from too 🤩 it's actually my 2nd favourite part of setups.

When will you add more plants? And maybe some underwater cameras?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not many more plants. I’ve got heaps in the margins that are just tiny at the moment. I thought about underwater cameras but I’ve already killed an expensive go pro, so I think I’ll just stick with my iPhone in a waterproof case.

Always exciting when you can add the fish will you put anything bigger in there or is 10cm the max size? Reading another post I didn’t realise that koi were illegal were you are? Why is that?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
G’day Sam. Carp are a big problem in our rivers so koi are illegal in my state. However the are legal in some other Aussie states, so it’s a bit weird. To add to the weirdness we are allowed goldfish in our ponds. But anyway it is what it is. This pond may one day get some bigger fish but I’d say that’s years away. I’ll see how well these populations breed before adding a bigger predator.

@@Ozponds Hi Kev that’s really interesting with the carp I didn’t know that. I’m looking forward to see how the fish get on that you have added 👍 I see your water still has a slight blue tinge to it but I quite like it now against the rocks and the plants you have added. Pond is looking really good 👍

I have a question that i can't find the answer for and I'm hoping you might know. Do you think a bog filter would work on brackish water or do you think the salinity would clog the area the bacteria would grow? I'm going to run an experiment but if you already know the answer that would make life a little easier lol
@Ozponds

I’ve not tried it but I would be reasonably confident that it’s going to work. At the end of the day a bog filter is just a supersized biological filter.

@Ozponds yes but the way you use yours is much different than any other I have seen. Most other people doing a bog filter use a fast water flow rate. This creates a regular filter. The slow rate at which you use creats an anaerobic area as well which is awesome. I used to breed axolotls but the city I live in changed from chlorine to chloramine without any notice. I was only treating my water for chlorine. I'm not sure how much you know about chloramine but that is a tank killer. It killed everything I had. I went crazy trying to figure out what I did wrong. Once I learned what had happened I put a $10,000 full home water filtration system on my house. I'm not going back to breeding axolotls but I'm thinking about farming giant freshwater prawn. Before I do I'm do a ton of experiments on filtration. A bog filter seems to be a great addition to my grow out ponds I will be making. Thank you for replying

Realistically can a bog filter with a small stream handle koi medium stocked. Let's say the bog filter is 25% of the ponds size? Or would it be to much maintenance thank you
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
I have no first hand experience with koi as they are illegal where I live. However I do believe that a 25% bog filter would be great for a medium stocked koi pond. If you look at Nelson’s water gardens or aquascape ponds they use bog filters and stock with lots of big koi. They say the filters still only need a clean once a year. One of the keys for me in any bog filter I make is that it’s easy to clean. That way even if you need to do it more often than you were expecting it’s no big deal.
