There's so much that you can do with relatively minor sculpting of the landscape, and intelligent plantings.

We had several ponds on our property in the dry tropics which were seasonal, and used to charge the aquifer and water livestock and wildlife. We added local Nothobranchius fish (killifish) which lay eggs in the mud, and these hatch when the ponds refill, these controlled mosquitoes, and were a food source for kingfishers herons etc, as well as some human consumption. Once the small fish were established, we added larger lung fish which provided a larger fish and a better food source for humans - only allowed to be fished in the wet summer, and no digging them out during the dry period, so as to maintain the population.

Excellent presentation. I was talking to my aunt yesterday about rainwater collection techniques I have been learning from you and others. To my surprise, she mentioned that my grandfather(her Dad) had dug 4 big ponds in his farm which collected lots of rainwater. They had really good crop harvests each year due to the ponds. I remembered that we collected water from one of the ponds during the dry season each year, until the mid-80s when the drought lasted more than 4 years. I was really impressed that the old generation knew these techniques, but also sad that their children lost all that knowledge.

I grew up playing in a ravine in the woods behind my parents house in northeast Ohio. We'd spend our days catching crayfish, salamanders and frogs in the slow meandering stream, and swinging across it on a rope swing that hung from a big old ash tree. In the winters we'd foolishly slide one by one across the icy pond daring each other to cross without cracking the ice and soaking our boots. It was an idyllic place to be as a young boy. Later as a teenager, some new neighbors a few houses over had the county game warden come in and trap the beavers who were active (very active) downstream. I went back there later in my college years and nothing was the same. The creek had mostly dried up and grown over, there were no more aquatic creatures to found. The ponds were no longer. Somewhat symbolically, the branch on which the rope swing had hung for so long had come crashing down. I had an epiphany that my entire childhood experience was informed by the terraforming activity of that family of beavers. It was their home and creation, probably for many, many generations, and we were just visiting, enjoying the fruits of their tireless labor. So if you should see a beaver dam and pond, please leave them alone. So much life depends on them.

People often think we in the Netherlands are fighting against water, but actually we’ve been working with water for the longest time. Along the major rivers are flat areas which flood almost every year, 50 to a 100+ metres from the dyke. Rivers need space to expand. You can’t stop flooding, but you can control which parts flood. Large ponds also play an important role in that. If rivers overflow, or rainfall is too much, excess water is led towards swampy areas or ponds/lakes through a large amount of irrigation. Technology definitely helps, but in the end you need to give water room. Work with the water, not against it.

This pretty much sums the basic ideas very clearly and informatively! I've only built one relatively small pond myself yet and another was already on my land. Oh, mistakes were made of course but nothing that could not be turned into a feature if not advantage. Both ponds are without any liner, placed on a highest part of the plot close to each other. It allowed us to perform maintenance without water losses since we simply pumped excess water to neighboring pond. It also helped to quickly stabilize chemical and bio water balance, allowing much quicker introduction of aquatic plants because usually you have to wait a year at the very least beforr introducing fish or flora to a newly filled pond. Anyway - great vid!

Wow. Halfway through the video and I subbed. Difficult to find good permaculture content creators. Wonderful presentation style and life-changing information if one is about to build a pond. Thank you very much.

There is something though in a seriousness about creating ponds! First pond I ever made was a huge mud hole I caught crayfish from the creek and released. All was going to plan until the next morning all that was left was bits and pieces of my hard work (apparently racoons, cats, opposums and etc can reach into a 3x3x12" pond and pluck the hopes and dreams of a 9 year old 1 by one and leave scraps behind) lol. I was hooked though since!

I'm so late to this game - but... need this so badly on our land. Wish I knew where to start, who to talk to about it here, locally. Thank you so very much for this - I wonder that this and other life on the land lessons are not taught in school from beginning to end - we could save lives and money! Thanks again!

I'd love to have an aquaculture pond with aquaponics filtration. My little IBC tote aquaponics systems aren't big enough to farm fish seriously. And the grow beds could be much bigger. This is all very interesting to me, thanks for the explanation.

Thank you, I’m in the process of applying to the agricultural science program online-torn between this and the horticultural science program, however I think you convinced me enough to go with this route. I can not describe my passion in words, but recently I had mindset shift from: “Oh, I want to but I don’t think I’d be good at it,” to, “F@ck it, this is what I want to do with myself.” Thank you, wish me luck on the application. I’m so nervous

The quality of this video is astonishing. I don't know how the visuals are done but they are very effective and of course the knowledge is also invaluable. One of the best things I have seen on KZbin.

Called farm dams in Australia! We have been doing everything in this video for a very longtime in Australia. I live 20 km from the some of the first keyline designs by P.A.Yeomans in Richmond NSW Australia. In a dry environment, nature will move in quickly. On rainy days yabbies (a crayfish) and long neck turtles with move between dams, even going over or up hills. I have three farm dams on my property.

We are getting ready to put in a large koi pond next to our proposed garden area that we plan to install media beds and floating raft beds to create a recirculating, outdoor aquaponic system. Fingers crossed

I would love to see it when it's done! I've been playing with aquaponics in IBC totes for the last 8 or so years and I'd like to build a pond full of tilapia with grow beds for filters and some floating rafts. I tried it once for a while with lettuce floating in the pond with a net underneath to protect the roots. The tilapia still got to the plants and they died. A separate pool is better so you can filter the water before the floating plant pond. The roots get bio slime if the water isn't filtered but I didn't know until I tried it. Now the info exists on KZbin to do it all right. Good luck!

Great video. I'm plan to built a habitat pond in my yard, where at one time there was a creek, which the city disposed of. Rocks are still there, so I can use them once I'm done digging the pond and adding the lining. I did one in my previous home around 20 years ago, I'm old but still alive, I think I can manage. Will be checking the links.

It would be great if they could use data from satellites and clever algorithms to determine good spots for such waterworks. Maybe even inform design based on the information gathered. Ideal, Size, shape, usage, etc. Even suggest contextual recommendations for permaculture practices around such works. Worldwide. It would arguably be immensely beneficial to direct technical and material aid to developing countries optimally. Especially where desertification and erosion are problems.

I’m sorry I didn’t really understand your perspective on the final 3 drawings. Is this a birds eye pov or a sideways pov? I’m not really sure what I’m looking at. Aside from that, the video was excellent. I learned a lot. Thank you.

The final 3 pond drawing is a birds-eye, or 'plan' view.

Absolutely brilliant presentation! The beginnings of some excellent ideas for us so we can think about restoring our habitat & fish pond and possibly build a firefighting/controlled seepage pond higher up the mountain. Liked & subscribed. NOTE: acquiring the components to make an AR Sandbox. Already have the XBox peripheral, acquired from Goodwill thrift store.

For the how part, I highly recomend a bulldozer over any other type of heavy machinery, they can move more soil farther and faster then any excavator or backhoe. The bigger the dozer, the better. The main reason is the distance the material needs to be moved. Even when compared to an excavator and a dump truck, a lone bulldozer can do a better, faster and cheaper pond then any other earth mover out there. Certainly excavators have their place in dredging and such to renovate a pond but for the initial dig, a bulldozer can't be beat.
