Adding Botanicals to melt and pour soap | Will they mold? Rose, Lavender and more!

So I went ahead and did a little at home experiment with botanicals that are typically added to melt and pour soap to see if any one of them would mold. I know some of these are fine for hot process or cold process but it's completely different than melt and pour soap. I used Rose petals, Lavender buds, Safflower petals, Cornflower, jasmine, calendula and just for fun I tried hibiscus leaves (tea) and some sea kelp granules. I was defiantly surprised on what flowers had mold and what ones were safe to use in melt and pour soap. This will answer the age old question of why is my melt and pour soap turning brown?! Don't add some of these flowers to your soap. Enjoy!
Don't forget to leave a comment and let me know what other kind of additives to melt and pour you would like me to do an experiment on.

Your test is great for begginers! I wish I saw these one 1 year ago, when I started soaping.

Yeah. I see a lot of beginners try these, I thought it would be good to do an at home test. I have been soaping since about 8 years but still new to melt and pour. I knew the answers to most of these but a couple surprised me. Thanks for watching!

I’m in the research part of soap making (haven’t made anything yet waiting for my beginners kit from Bramble berry to come) but in the meantime I decided to watch videos on TikTok about the soap making process and came across a few videos saying not to use lavender in melt and pour bases and I was shocked as I wanted to make a lavender shampoo bar with the soap and pour base. But I’m glad that you did this video it was extremely helpful and I know what to use and what not to use going forward as far as botanicals in soap and pour! Liked and new subscriber here 😊🤍

I think a lot of it is more discolouration than mould but it shows why its not a good idea to put botanicals in soap as it doesnt look good after a while.

That’s a very good point. Not many things we put in melt and pour soap hold up

I stopped putting any botanical on my soaps ... i do cold process soaps and trust me every item molds so best not put it
@aliciaarroyo6

Yes! I agree. You have less mold issues with cold process soap. Mostly because of the lye, but I have still had issues with it. Melt and pour definitely can see the mold within a few days.

Can you please tell me which flowers we can use in soap ??

Non realistically. They all mold in melt and pour. You can add some to cold process or hot process soaps.

To my knowledge it will not mold in soap but I will do a test video just like this one and let you know my findings. It might be a few months so I have time to run the experiment.

Yes, that was what I found pretty much everywhere when I did research. I would have to say my findings were about the same even though I had some discoloration.

@@aliciaarroyo6 such a bummer as they sure are amazing when u first put them in. i have learned to put them in, or on bath bombs, and in salt baths, ect and just accepting that nope for soap! LOL

You can use herbal extracts instead of the raw herbs

@@aliciaarroyo6 Yes i remember a few sites that sell melt n pour saying herbal extracts can be used and I also notice some people actually make their own extracts and I said people should try that way since extracts are used at lower percentage
