Nice design work on the cabinets. Also it is always good to have the farmer's sink on hand when building the cabinet. Often their dimensions change slightly when they are fired in the kiln. Custom fitting the sink is the best way to control the margins since the sink and countertop are the two elements the cabinet maker doesn't control!

Finally someone uses dominos and pocket holes where they make sense and just screws through the sides otherwise when that makes sense instead of unnecessary gratuitous pocket hole nonsense like most of the rest of youtube. Really interesting build. I've heard of building kitchens to scale with cardboard or something to get a feel for the final build. Face frames first is really smart. About halfway through I'm interested in how you handle the toe kicks.
@Psychlist1972 Жыл бұрын
I made my kitchen cabinets in a similar way. One thing we found, after them being installed for years, is those face frames going all the way to the floor creates an inside corner that fills with crud that is dropped, spilled, or kicked under the toe kick. You can't get a swiffer or similar in there to clean it properly, you have to get down on your hands and knees. You have kids as well, so it'll presumably end up the same way with you. The other thing is the legs get hit all the time with kids, vacuum, etc. They look great, but turned out not to be practical for us.

Every endeavor has its own vocabulary. Machining has "swarth" to mean the metal cut off a "job". Sawyers have "wain" and "figure". Cabinetry has "face frame" and "box". I wondered about "box". In ceramics, a "box" has 2 parts: the bottom and sides vs. the "lid". In cabinetry, the "lid" is the front of the "box" and a "box" can have multiple "lids". If the "lid" slides out, it is a "drawer". If it swings open on a hinge, it is a "cabinet".

Beautiful. In your last cabinet video you mentioned making the cabinet for the fridge 3 feet wide. Hope you made it bigger. Fridges seem to get bigger year after year and they radiate the heat off the sides now so leave plenty of air space around it. If you seal it up too tight you might kill the fridge. Good time to double check.

The other thing I recommend is considering putting some support cleats under the floors of the cabinets. Maybe the screws are sufficient, especially with you having a solid 3/4 back, but those bottom shelves tend to get *heavy* things thrown in them, like bottles of bleach/drinks, sacks of potatoes, heavy pots and pans, etc.
@mcremona Жыл бұрын
I might but none of the bottoms will bear any weight. All the lowers are drawers

30:30 would you potentially be putting weight on that panel if you had to do plumbing work under the sink? Just thinking of times when I've had my back down under a sink to mess with new drains / fix leaks / install new faucets. I'm sure it'll be fine and worst case, it falls through onto the heater and you figure out a new system, but figured I'd share.
@michaelc.3812 Жыл бұрын
Matt, it’s great to see you wearing the respirator, and I hope other woodworkers will ask why you go to that extreme. In actuality, all sawdust is carcinogenic and some wood (and glue) are toxic. Your modeling safe cutting is appreciated, while I’m as guilty as anyone in cutting wood with no respiration.

As for handles, since this is already over engineered, two threaded inserts set deep enough you can get a counter sink head flush, or just some rounded head ones. a screw in the threaded insert just to limit the crap that gets in them over time.

The cabinets are coming along nicely. I didn’t realize how heavy the sink was until you got it out of the box and started moving it around. You may have mentioned this in a previous video, but the plywood looks like a cabinet grade type with some kind of finish on it. Can you let us know what it is and give us an idea what it costs per sheet? I know that birch, maple and oak veneered plywood have different prices, but I don’t recall seeing the type your using for your cabinet box builds.

30:00. Glass Suction Cup, don't forget to seal all cut edges. Over time all sorts of liquids will seep into the cuts. This makes a mess when it swells up. You may be better off making the insert small by a smidge to allow for a rubber seal of some sort. Ask me how I know... edit; you can redo the insert by making rabbits on the edges and base to simplify it. No rubber. (I don't see the need for the heater at all) I put a second layer on top to hide it (1/4'') Just make sure you can remove it if you need to.

Or you could just run a 1/8" brad of clear caulk in the corners. But my cabinets from the store don't even have that... all of the clear coat is pealing off of the doors. Cabinets are only 12 years old.

As I watch the initial sheet goods breakdown with the tracksaw, I am sort of imagining a goofy alternative: Matt turning the pallet of 4x8 sheets sideways and batch cutting that whole stack in half on the sawmill.
