One of the best lessons on this subject I've seen on YT. Great job, Darryl, and thank you.

Darryl, when you write songs, do you write chord first or melody first?

Someone else asked this question on my online school - I think it’s in the forum mate, check it out 🙂

I have a question. What if I used a scale instead of a key to create my chords. It doesn't look like there are any sharps within that key when he makes his chords.
@DarrylSyms4 жыл бұрын
A scale inevitably is a key, but however you want to think about it, that’ll work too 👍

I just want to play a melody and add chords to it without overthinking which note I’m playing and which chords work. Isn’t there a more intuitive way?
@Logan619ine-i5q10 ай бұрын
This is the intuitive way lol. Just play your melody and then find what notes you’re playing then make chords out of those that would be shorter than this vid. But it would really be useful to know the scale/key you’re in and just have those chords pulled up to be able to use. Or you could guess based off of the sound of your notes which is always fun imo and you dont have to follow the rules of music either just have fun

I just want to jam bro. Without going into mathematical analytical thinking (which key, which notes work...). If people are jamming they also can play chords to a melody without conciously thinking about the theory, can't they?@@Logan619ine-i5q

At 2:22 you say II dim, but you actually play II dim7 chord. I'm assuming the naming is for simplification's sake, but it confused me a bit, because when I think of a 'regular' diminished chord I think "b5 and b3!" (in this order) and not "bb7 b3!" :) Great lesson otherwise :)

That is correct sir, good spotting! 🙂

The ii chord is a m7b5.

In a minor key, you are correct

@@DarrylSyms Have you tried this voicing for the B half diminished: : B e string, D G string, F B string, and perhaps also the A D string? Great lesson by the way. Thanks.
