Talking of tones Paul....I used to have a Roland Blues Cube Hot amp which I used for mainly playing blues with my Custom Shop Telecaster with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in the bridge and a Twisted Tele in the neck pickup. Was very happy with the the tone but as with most "tone hounds" I thought I could get better. So I sold the cube and got a valve amp, a Peavey Classic 30 combo then moved on to the beautiful Fender Princeton Reverb 65 Re Issue a LTD edition in laquered tweed and a 10" Alnico Jensen p10q speaker. A stunning amp and I stuck with it for the past year, beautiful clean tones and I used a blues driver pedal for a touch of overdrive after trying many expensive botique pedals. I only play quietly and when we play in our local pub its not very loud. Then on a whim I bought another Blues Cube.....AND my playing and tones has been transformed...for the BETTER!! I love this amp and had forgot how brilliant the tones you can get out of this amp were and you do not need pedals to get them! Its brilliant for clean and blues tones the only downside is no tremelo but that can be got with a cheap pedal. So I have an as new Princeton for sale in tweed!!

Awesome lesson Paul & great intro as usual. You saying I don't know what chord that is how I am. My Cousin came to visit me a few weeks ago. I had one of my guitars tuned to DADGAD & another tuned to open G. I was just playing, making stuff up that I thought sounded good. He kept asking me what chords I was playing so he could follow along. I was like hell if I know. I think he thought that I was just saying that because I was going to record it or make a song out of it & didn't want him to steal it, or he thought I was an idiot. This video reminded me of that & gave me a good laugh. Keep up the great work!

@paulstaffordcook87992 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment Powerclean! Appreciated. Funny you should mention the Princeton….. you’re right, a Princeton popped up on my radar some years ago and I just HAD to buy one. As it happens I went for the ‘68 reissue as opposed to the ‘65, on the basis that the ‘68 might crunch and overdrive earlier. However, it ended up being a torturous and frustrating journey, albeit with a very happy ending. Long story short, every singe ‘68 Princeton I owned was faulty… (Here’s my video of when it all went sour: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGWqKmXqLKjkJY). I kept returning them only to be given another faulty version in its place. Had 3 in the end. So they all went back and the manager of my guitar shop said “why don’t you try that little Cornell over there and if you like it we could just swap?”. And the rest is a happy ending, as I adore my Cornell. But yes, I’d be intrigued to try the ‘65…..

That introduction was really nice...I may have mentioned this before in my previous comments on your KZbin show....but my own playing has been inspired and improved since discovering your channel....you've got me out of a rut and gave me some ideas/concepts to work with...and I heard of Tom bukovak through you...my style is similar to yours in that I have what you refer to as a "tool box" of chords/riffs that I don't necessarily know the theory behind but I use my instincts and it sounds right...I dabble in jazz (the reason I own a ibanez George Benson GB10)...And I play entire jazz standards chords/fingerstyle like Misty, All of me,autumn leaves, somewhere over the rainbow etc...and haven't got a clue of tha names of the chords...(I know all the "cowboy " chords lol)...I've tried in the past but .I'm a bit lazy where theory is concerned I just want to get on with playing tunes....its not like I'm going to join a proper jazz trio who would probably "find me out" for the faker I am after 10 minutes ....I do the same with classical guitar...I cannot read music ( well I can a bit but I'm painfully slow at it lol) ...I've learnt entire peices off KZbin just watching where the players putting their fingers and copying...I'm currently working on a particularly nice solo arrangement of dire straits private investigations cherry picking what I think is the best parts of 2 classical guitarist's arrangements...I know you've probably spent up on your stunning les paul custom....but I'd love to hear you on a jazz box...I think you'd excel at it....although you been a Gibson guy it'd probably lead you to bankruptcy and remortgages and divorce...so maybe I shouldn't even be suggesting it..lol...that said ibanez do amazing jazz guitars that whilst still not cheap are a match (in my opinion) for Gibson....a bit like the high end yamaha acoustics are to Martin...same quality just 1000 cheaper than whatever its Martin model equivalent is...but still annoyingily not quite as desirable or with kudos of ownership..we are shallow creatures us guitarist's aren't we...they have to "look right"....lol...that said .my Ibanez GB10 is a stunning sounding and looking guitar...hey if it's good enough for Mr Benson who could own any model or vintage he wants then it's good enough for a shit kicker from Barnsley like me..ironically enough...even though I'm a big fan especially of his early stuff I don't play George Benson type licks on it....with flatwounds through a super reliable indestructible Roland jazz chorus amp..(although like you I've never had problems that some people have with their valve amps ...forever changing valves and in for repair. Etc) ..highly recommended ...I know you have a Gibson es330 which will do the jazz thing ...I've got an ...amazing for what I paid for it... Korean 2007 bigsby fitted Epiphone casino that has the old Grant Green vibe..that I use if my GB10 is in its case and I'm too lazy to pull it out....but..when you pick up a big old jazz box with 12 quage flatwounds you're making a statement...you know your doing jazz thang ...your not going to get sidetracked by some hendrix/Clapton riff lol...man I'd love to hear you on a jazz style guitar...

Hi Paul ! Greetings from Akron , Ohio USA ! Turned on the computer , clicked on KZbin and there you were . Love the sound of the Romany amp with your Tele ! I haven't used flatwouds in years , but when I was a kid I I bought them because they made less string noise and were easy on my fingers while learning barre chords . Of course , everything you play sounds great ! So now that you have had the LP custom what do you think ? Looks like it plays easy , sounds really good . You cannot go wrong with a Gibson . By the way , nice haircut .
@paulstaffordcook87993 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gangnam. Yes, I beamed my playing all the way across the pond to your personal computer in Akron. Thought you could do with something to watch today 🤣. Yes, the excitement of owning the black beauty has finally settled down, and I’ve spent lots of time comparing it to the sunburst R9. They are quite different. For a start the neck angle is way more steep on the R9…. You don’t actually notice it until you look down as you play. In summary - the Black Beauty feels more like the “Telecaster on Steroids” that people often say about ‘59 Les Pauls. And the sunburst R9 is definitely more fat sounding and muscular. I’m very pleased they are so different, as it’s nice to enjoy them both as separate entities. When you play the open thick E string on the black beauty it almost has that Gretsch sound. A real bright “thunk” that makes me laugh. And the R9 is way more buttery smooth to play and has such creamy fatness. Oh I’m a lucky boy Gangnam! 🙏

Excellent point of view Paul. 👌 Funny thing, I have been playing with D tuning on my Timberline and the Cedar top really resonates quite well; however, it definitely gets a bit complicated playing along with others, but it is a lot of fun for sure. I think the most important thing you said was not to be too concerned about the chord identity, but just try stuff and discover new sounds. In all honesty, the way we expand our chord library or voice vocabulary is to experiment and make note of the sounds we create. The more we play them, the more we understand the connections to other sounds, and before you know it, music is flowing from your fingers. So many people put way too much emphasis on structure and not nearly enough focus on enjoying what you are doing. Of course basic chord structures are necessary, but if you ain't havin fun, you ain't doin it right.😉 I see you have both of your favorites out.🤪 When you putting flat wounds on the Beauty?
@paulstaffordcook87993 жыл бұрын
Thanks GW, wise words as always! Funny you mention Flatwounds on the black beauty…. I’ve tried them on the 335, the Gold Top and the Tele. And it’s only on the Tele that they have a very obvious affect. And so I’ve now removed them from the 335 and the Gold Top. I’ll probably not put them on any more Gibsons. However, I’m convinced that Fender guitars are the perfect candidates for them… so I’ll probably put them on the Oswald Strat when it arrives 😊
@gwbuilder57793 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Interesting, I wonder if the types of wood used respond differently as well as the pick-ups? I know that all the different basses I've played, Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Tobias, and Kimberly all responded well, but only the Peavy did not. Unfortunately living in Hawaii, the flat wounds don't last as long, so not practical for me on the six strings, I think the cores corrode underneath the wound causing them to dull out fairly quickly. The 335 makes sense because it has a specific unique sound, but I suppose the Gibsons in general have a hotter driving sound, so perhaps that effect is lost in the process. 🤔 I just preferred the smooth feel and no noise from the strings when sliding the neck up and down.

Hi BluesHolyMan, good question. I absolutely love the Quarter Pound in the bridge - it’ll be in there forever as far as I’m concerned. As regards the humbucker in the neck….. I prefer it to the original lipstick, but on hindsight, I think I might have preferred a P90 or maybe even a filtertron…. The point is, I rarely use it on its own. Really none of my business , but I was wondering about the Strat issue . I have played and owned so many guitars over the years . I always seem to come back to Strats after having flings with other brands and models that haunt me , and that I tire of eventually . Please excuse me if I sound out of line . I mean no harm . Yeah, like everything, there’s more than one way to do it. I tend to like that shape because you can apply vibrato to the whole chord, if desired. Whereas if you’re shaping it with a bar, using your first finger as the bar, then you can’t apply vibrato nearly as easily. Cheers for watching

Hi Paul, may I ask what the neck pickup is? Is it a mini humbucker? Cheers!
@paulstaffordcook8799 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mr Waddles, and sorry for late reply. Yes, it’s a full size humbucker from Bare Knuckle. It’s a “Stormy Monday” which is their take on a typical low wind PAF style.

Paul, your talent is just amazing! Great lesson. The Tele and Les Paul both sound fantastic! What are you playing through for this video?

Thanks Deano65. Really appreciate your compliment 🙏. The amp is my Cornell Romany 12 and I’ve stomped on a cheap little overdrive pedal called a Tone City Kafir Lime. 👍
@59fefo3 жыл бұрын
hi Paul, thanks for this lesson. After buying the Romany 12 I try to get the sounds as close as possible to yours, and I ask you if by any chance, when you use the stratocaster, do you also have a reverb? because with that of the Romany I can't get the same resonance as yours. I may know how your amp is set up .. sorry for my english .. thank you very much Paul
@paulstaffordcook87993 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefano. Yes, I prefer to get my Reverb from a pedal (Strymon Flint or NUX Atlantic), rather than from the Romany. I find the Reverb on the Romany just a bit TOO much. Anything past 2 is just a bit wild. As regards my settings, I’m always on attenuation setting D (bedroom volume), Reverb at 0, Bass at 6, Middle at 6, Treble at 4, Volume 3, Input Hi. Hope that helps 👍

thanks Paul for in your suggestions. my romany reverb it's not so powerful, anyway I'll buy a reverb Do you teach distance learning? @@paulstaffordcook8799

Paul, Can you move to PA to be my teacher? You know how much I love your playing. Like I always say, You can String up Granny's Broom with Chef Boyardee Noodles, and you'll still play just as well.

🤣, right that’s it, I’m on a plane, should be there in 10hrs. Thank you Luis, I’ll bring my broom, if you can supply the Noodles. Cheers mate

Another great lesson, Paul! Amazing playing as always. I want to ask you an unrelated question: just got a Hudson Broadcast and I’m experiencing, when setting the gain high, increased hum/hiss with my Cornell Plexi 7 amp, especially when engaging the right side of the pedal. I think it’s normal and it is just amplifying what’s already there, but… Does your pedal behave the same? Cheers!
@paulstaffordcook87993 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergio. Yes, I think that’s normal. The reason it doesn’t really affect me is that (a) I’m at bedroom volume 99% of the time, and (b) I rarely play with high levels of gain…… I DO often use the high gain side of the pedal but I have the Gain knob set pretty low, which still offers plenty gain for my blues crunch. I’ve even noticed that the Broadcast, if set to the highest levels of Gain, will actually pick up nearby radio signals 🤣
@SergioAureo3 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaffordcook8799 that sums it up. I’m also using it at pretty low gain levels. Loving the pedal so far!

Hey Paul, how do you feel about those flatwounds on the tele after having them on a little while?
@paulstaffordcook87993 жыл бұрын
Hi Z.S. Good question - I absolutely love them, and will be keeping them on for a good bit longer. I tried them on the 335…. na, didn’t like it. Then I tried them on the Gold Top (which still has them)…. good results, although I can’t be sure they’ll stay there. But on the Tele it’s just Bingo! Straight away, it’s the only guitar so far where the Flatwounds actually sound like Flatwounds, i.e. all plunky, almost nylon sounding.

Thanks Jonny. I used to gig in a pub band from ‘91 to 2006. Wonderful memories. But the thought of forming or joining a band at my age? I’m too lazy and so I just like to post on KZbin. I also like to do a bit of busking, which helps to scratch the itch.

Hi Jonny. Yes, I busk alone. But I don’t sing. I simply play lead guitar along to KZbin backing tracks (played from KZbin via my Katana Air’s Bluetooth facility). Thanks for your kind words, appreciated 👍
