Adding Factory Cruise Control to a Harley Road King for Under $50!

Today I show you guys how I modified my Harley Road King to enable its factory cruise control for under $50.

Thanks man, I did it today on mij FLHTP '08. red light was coming on after the siren switch turned ON en it worked while riding ,awesome . No need to go to the dealer for activating it. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Pin 22 is unused, pin 34 says digital power and 35 and 36 say idle speed control motor. Im trying to do this on my 2002 flhpi

Hey Maddog267, you mentioned it quickly but you did have to have the dealer re-flash your ECU to allow the wiring change to work correct? I like the ingenuity to make it work.

My 2006 Police Road King has throttle cables, not drive-by-wire. Could this still work?

Unfortunately no. Older Harleys using a cable driven throttle require an additional throttle motor to use cruise control which is not included from the factory if your bike was not equipped for cruise control. I would recommend finding an original Harley cruise control kit for your model year bike and following the instructions on that.

I don't see why this mod couldn't work for older models. However I think it is important to look at the wiring diagram for your specific model and see if the wires are the same or if there are differences that need to be accounted for.

I got the orange light to come on for the first time ! The fault was me. I had the 22 wire in the right pin hole but the 35 wire was in the wrong hole. I seen on your video where your 35 wire hole was and mine was not near it. It should work now !

I did add an external momentary switch to my 2013 roadking police bike and it didn't work for the resume/speed increase function. I picked up 12v and sent it to pin 34 but no resume or increase function. All other cruise control functions work. Did anyone tried this and got it to work ?

I see where you installed pin 22 into the main plug, but can you show me on the plug where you installed pin 35? It was hard to tell which port you installed it in the video

I reviewed the footage and I narrowed it down to about 2 pins. imgur.com/a/lRxye3w Here is a screenshot I took, where I am pointing to with the red arrow, I am like 80% sure that is the right hole, if not then the green arrow. This video is almost a year old at this point so I don't quite remember the exact location, I admit I should of done a better job in the video showing where that second pin is.

Is it the same for a 2009 road king flhp? I have all the same holes but no set cruise. The orange cruise light turns on though..

Hey, I looked at the wiring diagram for the 2009 bikes and everything seems to be the same. If you are getting the orange light but cant set the cruise I recommend you check your wiring connections again. Also Harley doesn't let you set the cruise control under a certain speed, something like 30mph. So make sure you are reaching that speed at least when testing.

I am bummed...I did everything right . I got 12v at pins 22 and 35 when I press the buttons. I took the bike to the dealer to enable cruise control and it still doesn't work ! The mechanic says CC is turned on in the ecm. Any suggestions??

Hey Im sorry to hear your having issues with the mod, let me try to help you. When I look at the wiring diagram for 2013 the pins used for cruise control are the same as 2012 so that does not seem to be the issue. You say you have a police road king right? Are you using the same siren wire harness like in the video or are you using different buttons to activate the cruise? Another thing I can think of is to double check and make sure the pins you installed into the ecm connector are fully seated. It is easy to push them in and have them get stuck part way. Looking at the front of the connector (the part the plugs into the ecm) make sure the pins are visible at the same height as the rest of the pins on the connector. Otherwise they wont make a connection in the ecm.

@@TheMAdBOlad267 Hi ....yes I got a police road king 2013. I used the same siren buttons that were on the bike the On /off button and the one that toggles with the horn. I will double check the pins to see if they are push in. Thank you...I will write back tomorrow with the answer.

Do you think a little Dielectric grease would help in the connector?

@@andrewbuza6035 I used dielectric grease in the video as a lubricant to help push the pins in, however I would not put dielectric grease directly onto the part of ecm connector that plugs into the ecm.

What is flashing for and is it needed

Hi Dobie, the motorcycles computer in some cases needs to be reprogrammed or "flashed" to enable to cruise control feature so that the newly wired controls can activate it. As I have read in these comments not everyone needs to do this but in some cases it is required. Your local Harley dealer can do this for you.

I didn't get the bike flashed yet , but did run the wires , & noticed when I turn the sien switch on it doesn't light on the tach, or do I have to wait until it's flashed to power it up Thanks

When I recorded myself doing this mod I had already had the bike flashed so I don't have experience with doing the mod without flashing the bike. However I would assume that the light would not come on unless the bike was flashed for cruise control.
