Great video on JEPQ & JEPI. You covered the pros and cons in a clean format that is easy to understand. I like JEPQ the best, but a lot of it has to do with SCHD being a big chunk or my portfolio. I agree it only makes sense to invest in JEPQ when you: 1) are in or close to retirement 2) need cash-flow now to pay bills (usually when in retirement, but some exceptions out there). I agree that QQQM or VOO are better for the accumulation phase.

Timely and useful information as always, Prof G. Thanks. I invest in both Jepi and Jepq, mostly in tax protected investments. I invest in SPYI in my brokerage account as this fund also has a very high, monthly dividend and it's more tax friendly. Unlike Jepi and Jepq, which pay early in the month, SPYI pays later in the month. Depending on your preference, this can provide cashflow balance. Thanks for your insight. Cheers

These kind of ETFs are ideal for retirees. Put enough in one of those to supplement your cashflow and invest the rest of your portfolio in a high growth, ETF like QQQ for capital appreciation. When the market is up, take some partial profits (from say QQQ) and buy more JEPI or JEPQ and that way boost your monthly cashflow. No need to sell equities in a down market and therefore no need for bonds which just lose money over the medium to longer term. I'm 70, live in Canada, have HTA and HTAE (Toronto exchange), covered call ETFs as my secure monthly cash-cow and HQU for capital appreciation and to take profit from when on offer. I don't have a penny in bonds. (HTA is already 10 years in the market and proved itself).

They came in handy as a base of "core" income to which I am diversifying slowly away from, by reinvesting unspent dividends into more growth & income holdings and individual stocks, as my dividend raisers do their job. Each year going forward JEPI and JEPQ will be smaller and smaller portions of my holdings.

I will be retiring in February, and my plan is to use 50% SPYI, 40% QQQI, and 10% IWMI in my Roth for income. This should give me a yield of around 13%. However, I plan to reinvest 5% of that back into them as a hedge against inflation, and to provide a buffer when the market drops. Although the NAV appreciation has kept up with inflation this year, I am not counting on that. I like these funds because they have a target dividend yield, which makes planning easier. I like the fact that they are writing calls on the actual index, unlike the J's.

I don’t understand ELNs and their risk to the liquidity of my money invested in these funds so I’ve been reluctant to get enticed by these large dividend yields. Also, JEPI’s share price has been mostly flat when you go back to 2021 so I still like SCHD’s chances better even with the lower yield. Unlike a CD or T-Bill I don’t think it’s wise to pull out our calculators to figure out our monthly payment schedule when the dividend isn’t guaranteed.

You should be stressing four points that are germane: (1) You are going to give up growth for dividends, which is not always bad, but you are being forced to pay taxes that you would not normally have to pay. (2) You are willingly giving up one of the most important aspects of investing - the magic of compounding to build wealth. (3) The dividends are nonqualified, so you will be taxed at a higher rate. (4) Both ETFs charge a hefty .35% Expense Ratio, which is twelve time what VOO charges. Bottom line: you are leaving money on the table by investing with JEPI and JEPQ.
@NolanGouveiaАй бұрын

Trying to figure out if these two investments have any merit for a Canadian investor. The dividends would be subject to NRT in a TFSA.
