Haha California summers can be hot that's for sure, especially depending on where you are. What a beautiful state to move too, though. Washington is probably my favorite state in the US, but then again, I'm a bit biased to the west coast in general because of so many trees! ;)

There is certainly a level of learning paint to water balance, and even then it has a mind of its own. I think the key is letting go and being happy with "happy little accidents" .

I like the way you used both sides of your sketchbook...to practise the trees (or whatever) on the left, and also show the colors and combinations you used in the final painting (details I would forget if not recorded!), and also using artist's tape to remove and "frame" your painting ! It’s a quick and easy way to darken it if you’re after the tone. I’m a bit of a lazy color mixing artists, so I go for easy and what looks nice to my eye.

Love your tutorials ! I moved to the PNW 50 yrs ago....still in love with fir trees in all seasons. In winter they're green, if it snows they're magical ( we don't get alot in W Wa), in the fall they provide a background for autumn colors.

Heat your tape with a blow dryer before removing it. Especially where you have the clip. And it will be less likely to tear. I love sketchbooks. It's easy to store and transport. Love your style.

Gorgeous! I'm gonna have to try this! Also, if you pull the tape off at a 90° angle away from your sketchbook (make an L) it won't rip the paper. It took me a couple of decades to learn that one! 😉

This is wonderful! I love paint trees but sometimes what I see in my head doesn’t translate thru to my brush. I love your trees!! I have a tendency to make them too full. I keep telling myself less is more but we all have a tendency to think it needs a little more…and then there is too much!! I just found you and will be following you, looking forward to your tutorials. BTW I live on the east coast of the USA… But we have pine trees that look like that…and several that don’t, but you type is my favorite! Thank you so much!! There are so many of you wonderful viewers from the PNW. I love it. It means you must love moody forests, too?! Haha Thank you for watching and loving my landscapes. I appreciate that. With my trees, I use a light hand and a gentle sweeping motion, but it also helps having toothy paper. I think, however, that I'll do a landscape with easier trees. Really think about how I painted them as a beginner.

Thank you for sharing. FYI, not sure the deerfoot using is synthetic, as mentioned. Looks like Princeton Series 3750 Select Artiste Deerfoot Stippler, which is combination of Natural/Synthetic Hair. If another, would appreciate letting know. They do have a synthetic sable in the Mini Detailer 3050 series, although not as many stores stock where I am.

Beautiful painting! I love to paint but I always struggle with pines.I live in the UK and yes we have lots of pine trees but around me more oak type trees etc.Showing how you do yours in simple steps was really really helpful to me , thankyou xx
