5:27 Triton orbits in the opposite direction of Neptune rotaion, in Minecraft that makes it day when its night and night when it's day
@pfunk_15354 ай бұрын
This doesn't make sense.
@ViperBitten4 ай бұрын
@@pfunk_1535 It shouldn't. Day/night isn't dependent (solely) upon their orbit, but their planetary rotation. It's why a day on Venus is longer than its year, because it rotates so slow (and in the wrong direction), not because it orbits slowly or has a strange orbit. There are other cases where orbits are important, like tidal locking (where one side is always facing the star, similar to how one side of the Moon is always facing Earth), or a really elliptical orbit such as a polar orbit would result in strange day/night cycles. However our solar system does not have any of those such cases in relation to the Sun.

1:11 For clarity, Ceres was a planet but it and other asteroids were classified into what's now known as the Asteroid Belt because too many "planets" were being discovered.
@ViperBitten4 ай бұрын
Not because too many planets were discovered, rather because they realized they needed to be more discerning with what constitutes a planet so as to establish a clear boundary. In order to be a planet, it needs to orbit the main mass of a given system (star, black hole, etc), needs to be in hydrostatic equilibrium (be rounded), and it needs to have "cleared its neighborhood" as in anything near it would be gravitationally bound to it or absorbed by it - usually this means moons, trojan asteroids, or literally the planet having been bombarded by its neighbors during its formation and coalescing into one large mass in a given part of its orbit. Ceres doesn't "clear its neighborhood", as in the Asteroid Belt, therefore it's not a planet. Same with Pluto and the Kuiper Belt.
@lmaolol77023 ай бұрын
@@ViperBittenyes but they created those arbitrary standards to redefine what constitutes a planet BECAUSE they thought there were going to be too many planets no one had a problem with ceres or pluto being planets before
@ViperBitten3 ай бұрын
@@lmaolol7702 It's not about people having a problem with it, it's that planets *should* have a set definition with standards. If your favorite "planet" doesn't meet those standards, that's unfortunate for you but ultimately a line had to be drawn. You can still call it a planet if you want, it makes no difference to basically anyone, but again the line had to be made somewhere between what is and is not a planet especially as we find more exoplanets, dwarf planet candidates, and possibly a Planet Nine. I think most of the debate probably falls on the "cleared its neighborhood" requirement, because otherwise every spherical object orbiting the sun that was shaped into a sphere by gravity would be a planet, and that isn't an unreasonable definition aside from the desire to be more selective by making them clear their neighborhoods as well.
@lmaolol77023 ай бұрын
@ViperBitten why did there have to be new standards introduced for what makes a planet and what doesn't? why does it matter that there may be thousands of planets in our solar system?
@ViperBitten3 ай бұрын
@@lmaolol7702 everything needs a line between where it starts and ends for the sake of cataloguing. that's just science. let's take organic chemistry for example, which means that carbon is involved. "why does it matter if ammonia doesn't have carbon? i want it to be an organic chemical". because that's just not how it works. things are, and they aren't. feel free to believe what you want regarding planets, but it doesn't change the fact that there can be significant differences between planets and dwarf planets, or even planets and moons (Titan with a thicker atmosphere than the Earth, and both Titan/Ganymede which are larger than Mercury, for example), but your beliefs don't really matter when it comes to determining an objective method of sorting and cataloguing the trillions or more of celestial bodies in the universe. the fact it's unpopular is something I actually am a fan of, because that means they were objective in creating a system with definite requirements as all things should be in science.
