Why is this so simple and yet I've never done this!? It's even in the descr_strat file. Everyone knows that file!

Fun fact: the ability to recruit spartan hoplites is dependent on a "hidden" resource, known as spartans. Someone make a mod for spartan mines.

@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH Here is another vote for a video on the "Sparta" and "Rome" resources. 🙂 I am interested in the possibility of creating several new "Sparta" resources (each called something else) to build an area of recruitment system. For example, I would like to allow the Parthians to recruit their own hoplites if they can take control of historically Greek cultural areas that have the hoplite tradition, or barbarians to be able to recruit legionaries and artillery units if they capture the Roman heartlands in Italy.

Quite a few mods i play have unaccessible resources that i can't place a merchant on so this will be super useful for moving those resources slightly so they can be used.

Hello! I'm doing something similar to modifications and I had a problem adding units to other factions when i add greek hoplites to romans brutti the game crasched please HELP! I have a question.Do you show how to : change unit color, how to change faction flags and how to add a new setlement to the map (I Translate polisch to english in google translator and i sorry for spelling) Greetings

Hello! Changing unit flags at first seems simple enough but a faff as there as lots of various files to change. Inside Data/menu/symbols there are two folders with Faction symbols. Edit them with say photoshop and save the new ones in there. That only changes it on the menu screen. Repeat in Data/loading screen/symbols to change the loading screen symbol. That still leaves a few in the actual game to change. I think they are in the pack files which need unpacking (Data/packs). I haven't gone that deep just yet. That will also be where changing unit colours is (I believe).

If the crash happens on the main screen when you load into a campaign then it suggests that small spacing error or missing comma is preventing the change working. Try a clean version of Vanilla Rome and try again if you keep having issues. The more editing you do, the more unstable it becomes.

Any ideas of what I could do to fix the fact that merchants don't spawn in the Third Age mod (3.2)? There are resources everywhere and unlike on every other TW map they are located in places where foreign merchants won't immediately monopolize them. Oh, and you can't demolish settlement walls in that mod and recruitment seems to be dependent on your faction matching the faction that built the walls. I would also like the ability to make raids with cavalry or recon in force missions, that is, the ability to hit and run and retreat without penalties. Would that be possible if I've been a good boy TW-Santa?

I understand that editing the skins of the units would be more than "basic" modding, but I am interested to know what is involved, because I am disappointed that the uniform colors, for example, of the "SPQR Elephants" are not adjusting to match their new faction as I had hoped when I first heard it was possible to move units to different factions.

Is there anyway of adding new factions to RTW? I really wanted to like kit bash the factions from the expansions all into the main game... not so much for campaigns but for battles.

Descr_sm_resources (in data) lists the value of the resources. I haven't muddled with it much but presumably that would do the job!

Does this work on Mods too? I tried this on DaC by making a mithril mine on gondor region but it didn't work or mithril is use by dwarves only?

Hi TNH. Long time subscriber here. Would you know of any reason the changes wouldn't take? I've followed your guides to the T. I can't get the unit upkeep on the cog to change and I can't get any resources to show up on the map. I've done everything you've advised here in the guides. It works on my Rome Totalwar and barbarian Invasion but not in Medieval2 Kingdoms Gold. Although the time change works and the diplomacy seems to work. I'm only 20 turns in atm. So I'm at a loss atm. My version at the option screen says v 1.03 but when I attempt to apply the 1.05 patch it says it's detecting it as v 1.05 already. Also along with the medieval2.preference.cfg file unlike in your video I have right under it a medieval2.preference.cfg.BAK file. Also i have to move the cfg file to my desktop to make any changes then move it back into the directory otherwise I receive the Access Denied notification. Any closure on the matter would be highly appreciated :)

UPDATE: Problem solved. The answer was in the virtual store folder. There is a preference.cfg file in there and THAT's the one that needed the io line possibly along with the one in the main folder. Unit cost and upkeep are working fine now. That said, I want to go on and thank you so much for your guides. I've been playing these 2 games for years and you've single handedly extended that playtime probably by decades. Keep up the good work. I archive all your guides for posterity :)
